Full Version: Nintendo Reveals Legend of Zelda Timeline
Golden Sun Syndicate Forums > GSSF Square > Video Game Discussion > Nintendo
Someone Else
There is none.

Part of me just died. Pardon me as I kill the rest.

Well, not really. And yet... I feel a little empty.
Toasty
The guy who made that video is obsessed. And not in a good way.

Personally though, I think Nintendo should make a timeline, a canon if you will, for the Zelda series. Wouldn't be a bad idea. Heck, the guy's theory even makes pretty good sense.

But, I can see where they're going with this, and it's not bad either. Though it doesn't help their case when they make direct sequels to some of the Zelda games.
Nosferatu
I thought everybody knew this. I've known Zelda had no timeline for ages.
Someone Else
I could swear Ocarina/Majora's Mask was supposed to be connected to Wind Waker/Phantom Hourglass at least.
Aquamarine
Does this even matter in the slightest?
TheEnglishman
^Good point.
All you can really do between the games is pick links (subtle puns ftw) rather than make a specific timeline for all the games.
Drizzy Drake
I`ve seen a timeline that seems to fit; it breaks off into two paths, so uh, **** nintendo.
Legolastom
A time line only exists if Nintendo says it does and Miyamoto and the guys making Zelda really dont give a ****, which should have been evident by now.
TheEnglishman
Maybe they'll set the next one in space just to piss the fans off.
Blue
Eh, I suspected this for awhile now, but it was still fun to speculate. One internet debate down... too many more to go.
Someone Else
I liked the idea of some continuity in the games because, for me, it added more depth to the series. In the end, it doesn't matter too much, but the idea Nintendo pulls each separate story out their ass makes it look so much more shallow.
FusionDragon28
So then if there's no way to tie the series together chronologically, should we look to a multiverse theory?

FD28
Drizzy Drake
I call bull****.

Wasnt the OoT Link referanced in TP? **** you Nintendo, as inconsistent as catholicism. Your systems are like that too...
Mallick
It seems that you are all far more bothered by this than I am.

Chill out.
Laharl
even if there was a timeline, it certainly wouldnt pardon the massive disappointment the series has been for however many years now
Aquamarine
Laharl speaks the complete and utter truth. There are SOOOO many things that should be taken care of about the franchise that this stupid timeline **** doesn't even matter.
Mallick

Chill out.

i just hate nintendo as of late; any chance to rag on them is one ill take.
TheEnglishman
Ironically Nintendo are more successful than they have been in years but their fans hate them more than ever.
Drizzy Drake
people hate other people with money.

also nintendo hasn`t put out a TOP OF THE LINE system since the SNES (handhels excluded). The N64 was the beginning of the end, the Gamecube left them limping and the Wii slaughtered their ****; in a fan appreciation way, they`re rich as all ****.
Caael
The **** you talking about, the N64 and GC were awesome. I'm not talking about comercial success but both of them had brilliant games.
TheEnglishman
I've noticed people are saying the series has been poor for the last few years. I don't feel the same way. It's not been quite as good as in the past, but they're still making pretty good games compared to some of the junk out there. I liked Wind Waker and I thought Twilight Princess was great (apart from the wolf sections which were more... meh). The only real disappointment for me was Phantom Hourglass, where the main dungeon was like the crappiest stealth game ever.

The N64 had some great games, but it was clearly lacking the library the PS1 had, and it WAS a step in the wrong direction.

And name ten must buys on the GC. Not gonna happen.
Caael
Erm

Smash Bros
Goldeneye
Ocarina of Time
Majoras Mask
Super Mario 64
Banjo Kazooie
Banjo Tooie
Mario Kart 64
Perfect Dark
F-Zero

O wait thought you said N64. Gimme a sec.

Tales Of Symphonia
Mario Sunshine
Smash Bros Melee
Timesplitters 3 (Not exclusive tongue.gif)
Metroid Prime
I'd like to say Wind Waker but people will disagree
Uhh...

Yeah you have a point. But still, it had some good games that I still feel like going back and playing to this day tongue.gif
TheEnglishman
When I had my GC, the majority of games that I had were not memorable. Only Symphonia, Paper Mario, Twilight Princess and Wind Waker really stand out when I think about it. I'd definitely agree with Skidz.
EDIT: He said GC games Caael...

Paper Mario: TTYD
SSBM
Wind Waker
Metroid Prime
Metroid Prime 2
NFS: Most Wanted
FE: Path of Radiance
Kirby Air Ride (though some of the reviews unfairly criticized it as a kiddie's game)
Super Mario Sunshine
F-Zero GX
Luigi's Mansion
Pikmin
Pikmin 2
Soul Calibur II (I didn't really like it, but a lot of other people did)
StarWars: RS2: Rouge Leader
Super Mokey Ball 2
Tales of Symphonia

I'm sure there's more, but I threw in more than 10 because I'm sure there's a number of titles in that list that you'll say aren't good enough to buy.

and even most of the ones i left aren`t touching the ps2`s must buys
Toasty
Still, 9 is only one away from the ten you asked for. =P

I can agree with most of your cuts, but I would still consider WW and SMB2 to be must buys as they were both really entertaining games. Same goes for Kirby Air Ride, and most of my friends like it as well, but I can agree that it's not really a must buy.
Drizzy Drake

**** YOU!
Golden Legacy
This is a topic about the Zelda timeline and lack thereof, not another system wars thread.
Neon
Not surprising. I've thought about it a few times, but it's always been pretty clear to me that they don't have a timeline to it and just revisit the concept in new and interesting ways each time. The only times they tie something into a storyline is when they think the plot benefits from the context of previous titles, or when they want to revisit the concepts they had in a previous game.

eg. wind waker and twilight princess both refer back to oot, but they don't fit into a perfect timeline. The games kinda work under the assumption that if it is a single world on a timeline, all these events happen so far apart that they occur in isolation. If the events of a previous game did occur in the same universe, they were so long ago that they have faded into legends about a hero and an embodyment of evil.

That's all they do each game. They create a new hero and new nemesis in the same image and just do something new and inventive with the circumstances of their conflict.

I imagine this is how they came up with Spirit tracks

Reggie Fils-Aime: C'mon guys we need ideas for this new zelda to cash in on...throw ideas at me, anything
Employee: Trains?
Reggie: This man is a genius!
Golden Legacy
I think you are twisting his point. Neon is saying that there is a specific "theme" to each game that becomes the focus of that new Zelda. They create a world and plotline around said theme (i.e. oceans/sailing in Wind Waker) and that carries it through the new "conflict", which has little to do with past games in the series (the point of this topic, that there is no timeline).
Neon

yeah, I thought it was kinda amusing but kept it in anyway tongue.gif. The games are different enough, with each one having a new gameplay mechanic/theme, but yeah, the series has become pretty stagnant.
