Anyhow, it's an FPS, but you can like inflict status effects on the enemies and RPG stuff like that. Cool.

The game always has this creepy and disturbing feel to it, and it's amazingly cinematic at all times. Never has a game made me feel more emotion than this, and I'm just playing the demo. The audio plays a big part to the atmosphere, you often hear the voices of splicers (the main shooting targets in the game) talking with one another in an area, or a song on the radio, or any other sound. Like I've said, words don't do justice, you have to see for yourself. (sorry for using the word amazing so much, but there isn't any other way to describe this)
Onto gameplay. Actually, the story plays a big part of the gameplay so I'll put the background in a nutshell. I'll put some of the more critical parts in spoilers, though none will spoil the ending of Bioshock, as far as I know. But I'm sure many of you would rather enjoy learning these things from in the game. Rapture, the underwater city the game is in, is a hidden society made by the people for the people. Art can be pursued uncensored, and scientists can ignore typical government restrictions to do what they really want. One thing lead to another, scientists discovered ways to alter people's genetics using ADAM,
That was the nutshell. For gameplay, the player can find these plasmids and use them to gain advantages in combat. The shock plasmid stuns an enemy, allowing you to follow up with another attack without them being able to do anything. The incinerate plasmid is your basic fire spell, setting objects or enemies on fire. This is funny because if there is a source of water nearby (which there is a lot of the time, the city is underwater after all) they'll run screaming and jump in it, in which you can switch to the shock plasmid and... well you get the idea. Unfortunately, that was all that was available in the demo, but the amount of options you get for fighting is appealing, and that's something you don't have in many FPS.
You're cheating yourself if you have even the slightest interest in FPS (and I know you do, you Metroid fanboys) and you don't look more on this game. Just, download the demo for PC and try. I don't care if you've sold your soul to Nintendo (shame on you if you did) you need to learn more about this game.

Anywho, Bioshock is great. Of course, creating any non-Nintendo thread on this board is like wearing a big board with a target that says "FLAME ME".

I love 'em both, although the Wii has my attention till Halo 3. Then I'll be waiting till November 2 days after that. Then the Wii has my attention forever when Brawl comes out. Bioshock is the only thing I'm using the 360 for right now. You can't beat a good game of Super Mario Bros. on the Wii.

The 360 is an excellent console full of great games. No matter how much a Nintendo fanboy I am, I have to admit that. Unlike the PS3, I completely understand why somebody would want a 360. Heck, there are some games that I would love to play, and although Bioshock sounds great and I'm sure I would love it if I was ever to play it, there are a couple of 360 games I would rather play, such as Blue Dragon, Viva Pinata and any Final Fantasy that should be released soon.

So anyway, I'll admit. On medium difficulty, provided you know how to aim at all, this game seems EASY. If you like exploring you can find lots of health packs which will instantly make you healthy at the push of a button. And plasmids give you all sorts of advantages even then. But you shouldn't be playing for a challenge, this game amazing artistic design and an interesting world is what BioShock is about. If you want an adrenaline filled shooter, wait for Halo 3.

And he's like, 'Just warning you...'

BUT, if this is pretty much the only game available on the 360 that you're interested in, don't bother buying one until you see more games you want. It isn't worth that kind of money. But I'll always say you should get into computer gaming. Will post more as I get through the game.

Okay... I'm all up for maybe a BioShock prequel or something but I don't want BioShock II, BioShock III, and BioShock IV. That sort of thing KILLS games... too much can be too much, and I'd hate to see a game like BioShock, a game that blurs the line between game and art, turned into a ploy for a quick buck.

The Grand Theft Auto series succeeded because each game completely reinvented the last one. Those are the best kind of sequels.

Wikipedia said:
In total, there are nearly 200 types of vehicles in the game, compared to the approximately 85 in GTA III. New additions include bicycles, jet planes, a jetpack, quadbikes, tractors, trains, a combine harvester, police motorcycles, a forklift, a street sweeper, a ride-on lawnmower and many others. In addition, players can swim and climb walls for the first time in the series. The ability to swim has a great effect on the player as well, since water is no longer a viable barrier to the player and can no longer kill the player. For greater firepower, players can also wield dual firearms or perform a drive-by shooting with multiple gang members. Also, due to the immense size of San Andreas, a waypoint reticule on the HUD map can be set, aiding the player in reaching a destination.
Rockstar has emphasized the personalization of the main character. Clothing, accessories, haircuts and tattoos are now available for purchase by CJ, and have more of an effect on non-player characters' reactions than the clothing in Vice City. CJ's level of respect among his fellow Grove Street gang members varies according to his appearance and actions, as do his relationships with his girlfriends. Players must also ensure CJ eats to stay healthy and also exercises properly. The balance of food and physical activity has an effect on his appearance and physical attributes.
San Andreas also tracks acquired skills in areas such as driving, firearms handling (when skills are high enough, double-wielding of certain weapons is possible), stamina, and lung capacity, which improve through use in the game, adding an RPG aspect to San Andreas. CJ may also learn three different styles of hand-to-hand combat (boxing, martial arts and street fighting) at the gyms in each of the game's three cities. CJ can also speak with a number of pedestrians in the game, responding either negatively or positively; Rockstar claims that he has a total of about 4200 lines of spoken dialogue.
The game's artificial intelligence was also improved. No longer can the player beat a pedestrian to death on a busy street in broad daylight and have bystanders not respond. While most pedestrians will flee or duck for cover, some armed civilians and enemy gang members will attack CJ, and friendly gang members will shoot at and pursue his opponents. Cops will now chase other rival gang members who are committing crimes, instead of just the player.
Other new features include:
Car modification: Most automobiles in the game can be modified and upgraded at various garages. All car mods are strictly visual apart from a nitrous oxide system which gives the car a speed boost when activated; and hydraulics, which lowers the car's height by default and allows the player to control various aspects of the car's suspension. Other common modifications include paintjobs, rims, body kits, side skirts, bumpers and stereo system upgrades.
Gang wars: The goal is to gain as much territory within the city as possible in order to earn money. Battles with enemy gangs are prompted whenever the player (either alone or accompanied by fellow Grove Street Families members) ventures into enemy territory and kills 3-4 gang members. If the player then survives multiple waves of enemies, the territory will be won and fellow gang members will begin wandering the streets of these areas. Occasionally, your territory will come under attack from enemy gangs and defeating them will be necessary to retain these areas.
Robbery: Continuing the series' tradition of controversy, home invasion is included as a potential money-making activity. By stealing a robbery van, CJ is able to sneak into a residence at night, and cart off valuables or shake down the occupants.
Minigames: Numerous minigames are also available for play in San Andreas, including basketball, pool, rhythm-based challenges (dancing and 'bouncing' lowriders, with hydraulics), and video game machines that pay homage to classic arcade games. In addition, there are the aforementioned casino games and methods of gambling, such as betting on virtual horse races.
Multiplayer: A two-player cooperative mode has also been added for the PlayStation 2 and Xbox versions. Accessing this mode will launch a series of special objectives similar to 'Rampages' from previous Grand Theft Auto games. Two human players will be able to travel by car or on foot. Both players are required to remain on the same screen and within a reasonable proximity of one another.

Anyway, BioShock... wow, the story gets better and better as you go on. My complaint is... The "Rosie" type of Big Daddy. (they are named after Rosie the Riveter, since they carry a "rivet gun". Get it?) I can't even describe it. The gun they fire is super-accurate, appears to be semi-automatic and takes you down in perhaps 5 hits. Also... Vita Chambers. I want to be punished for dying, dammit!

If you mean by classics the same crap over and over again, then yeah, I guess I have. But I'm open-minded. BioShock is something different. Clearly you don't appreciate games as art, so play BioShock or go annoy somebody else with your ego.
So I just beat BioShock. I got the "good" ending because I saved all the Little Sisters. It wasn't exactly a happy ending, but, Jack got what he wanted in the end. It was heart-warming but sad at the same time.
As for the final boss battle, it wasn't that hard (playing on medium, though) and I had more trouble taking down Rosies and Bouncers. I mostly just shotgun'd him with Exploding Bucks and then shooting heat-seaking RPGs at him.
I'll play BioShock again after a few weeks or a month and this time harvest the Adam from the Little Sisters rather than rescue. That ending will probably be really sad, though. :P

That is LOL especially since the developers have killed the BioShock for PS3 rumors.
http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/24/levine-c...a-on-pc-issues/
On a note for that article... other than a couple of crashes to the desktop (which were more my fault with changing some video settings) I've had almost no problems with BioShock on my PC. So I don't know why others are having so much problems.
This Sony Defense Force thing is hilarious, it's obviously a joke. I think I'll bookmark it as a good laugh. If you scroll down some more to this it's even more funny. They chart sales of "Sony Family" against the 360, Wii, and DS and claim that Sony sells more. Well... yeah, all of Sony's products placed against individual products, of course the numbers would make Sony look bigger. Now if you place Nintendo in a family versus Sony in a family, you'd get some nice results.

There was a guy in a doctor's outfit, RIGHT THERE behind me, watching what I was doing and holding a section of pipe as a weapon. I was holding a shotgun at the moment so it was a one shot kill, but still, it was a sort of an "OH SHI--" moment. If I was any less... for lack of better word, frightenable, I probably would've screamed out loud.
So yes, this game is quite creepy. Most games will give an honest try at being scary, but this game actually achieves thanks to some really high quality sound effects, art design, and general atmosphere.

I think that was the first Houdini Splicer you meet in the game. He's all like "Hello, chum!" and disappears.

Halo had a good singleplayer, but it's the multiplayer that helped the franchise get so infamous. Bioshock's singleplayer is far better than Halo 3's in my opinion, but Halo 3 also offers up to four players online campaign co-op, one of the best online multiplayers on a console, forge mode which is basically a level editor that can be accessed online with other players in real time, theatre to watch all the times Nemphtis teabags you after an assassination and finally Bungie.net which becomes the topping for the cake. I think Edge magazine gave Bioshock the fairest score - 8/10. It's an awesome game, but in this generation it takes more than a good singleplayer to win over the masses.

Games that have strong multiplayer modes are fine and dandy, but that's never going to be the selling point for me, particularly in FPS where there are people who stay home from work to play and can own me in three headshots. While it's true that games that have online multiplayer have a longer lifespan than those that don't, it will be a sad day when single player games like BioShock are gone in favor of games that are all about multiplayer

Also some of you will try and provide a singleplayer game which is way more popular than something such as Counter-Strike or something, and tell me that I'm obviously wrong when _____ is only a singleplayer game but people played it to death. My answer to do that is simple; I bet the game you're going to provide as an example isn't something very recent, and even if it is there's a high probability that the majority of gamers didn't play it again and again as much as you have. Why am I saying only recent games count? Because this trend for multiplayer gaming has only recently begun in full force.

Multi-player games have longer hours of potential play than those that are single-player only, I can understand that. But what I don't understand is why do all games need to have a major multi-player mode. How many multiplayer games do you need to buy? There's Halo, there's Gears of War, Counter-Strike, FEAR, too many for me to name. And there's more coming. Do we really need to own that many online multi-player games? And while I haven't played all those titles, I really doubt that they all have features that are very different from each other (except maybe Gears) to justify purchasing each of them for their multi-player experience. So I doubt that multi-player will be as major as a lot of people will think.
Actually, the only presence for online multi-player so far has been PCs (has had online multi-player for a long time) and the Xbox/360. The PS3 may join in soon, but will anybody care? The PS3 is still a huge waste of money and it looks like it won't get a lot better in the coming months, no exclusives worth anything. The Wii and the DS have yet to see a real killer of a multi-player game. Their Friends system makes me cry, and the matchmaking modes are even worse.
So what I'm trying to say is, bring on games with great single-player modes. I've played more than 300 hours of Oblivion, looking to play some more BioShock as soon as my computer is fixed, and also Zelda when I get a Wii. And if I feel like having a battle with some friends, I'll turn to Crysis when it comes out. But I don't need 5 different games that all promise me some "great online modes" when I have great single player games such as those.

Bioshock has a better singleplayer experience, so if you won't have Xbox Live then I suppose that will be a good choice. However if you have any brothers who also play videogames, Halo 3 might still be a better idea thanks to the co-op, forge and multiplayer.

What the **** is wrong with you people? Why are you even speaking out of your ass if you've never played either game to begin with? You're all complete gaming nubs, no idea what the hell you're talking about half the time.

You make it sound as if people are just beginning to realise about the need for multiplayer. I've played every game you mentioned there except for Crysis, and each was an enjoyable multiplayer experience in its own right. As for claiming that Gears of War is the only multiplayer game that will stand out, you obviously haven't got much experience in the console industry's multiplayer scene.
Multiplayer is becoming more and more necessary. There will always be exceptions to this rule such as Oblivion which doesn't need one as that's half of the magic, but a game with multiplayer means a game that's played far more often after the singleplayer is completed. Haven't you yet realised, more and more videogames are being released which are multiplayer-only.
Battlefield and Shadowrun for example, a trend is starting here where it's not just MODs that are lacking singleplayer. Online gaming is the new wow factor for consoles, even the little Wii allows you to play online which further proves my point. The reason why online gaming is the new trend is simply because online competitive gaming is generally much more enjoyable and challenging compared to playing against the computer.
Whether you can come to terms with it or not, the reason why Bioshock is already becoming a distant memory for gamers is the simple fact that there was no multiplayer in the game, no replay value. "Bioshock? Yeah, that game rocked." That's it, that's as far as the conversation will go. "Halo 3? Man I was doing some matchmaking yesterday with six of my friends and we were owning everyone! I blew up this Warthog with my Spartan Laser and got a triple kill!" and that's as obvious as my point can get.

Perhaps buy Bioshock and get Halo 3 afterwards. By the time you finish Bioshock you may have enough money to buy Halo 3, however then your line-up of games will consist of two shooters, which is a boring combination. Might want to spread out to other genres so you don't become a one of those *** genre noobs who only play RPGs but think they know everything about games and ****.

BioShock's story was amazing and it put the player in an interesting perspective. You honestly don't have many choices to make in BioShock, it's limited to either harvesting or rescuing little sisters. But the game gives you the illusion that what you do makes a difference, the game puts you in a situation where "you're ordered to murder three people. How does that make you feel?" "Is Atlas screwing me over?" "Is Tenebaum screwing me now?"
You don't see anything like that in a multi-player game.

Of course you don't, that's why games have a singleplayer mode. I'm not saying gamers don't want singleplayer games any more, you're going beyond the point I initially tried to make. I'm trying to say that more and more gamers are demanding more complete packages in their games, they don't want to fork out $50 for a singleplayer experience by itself, they want it to include multiplayer to enhance the replay value and continue the experience.
There's a reason why I just rented Bioshock, played it until I eventually got bored and returned it. People like me don't want to spend money on one night stand experiences. The $50 is only well-spent if I'm playing that game for weeks, perhaps months or even years depending on the quality.

There are also some gene tonics, and one of them is cool but the rest aren't noteworthy. One of the gene tonics greatly reduces prices on vending machines when you have it equipped, meaning you can worry less about ammo consumption and just enjoy shooting the crap out of everything. All in all, the DLC isn't anything special but at least it's free. The UPDATE however is awesome, as it makes Bioshock true wide-screen and let me tell you, this really enhances your overall experience with the game so check it out.
