As I continue to work on the GSS Revamp project, I have also been undergoing pre-development planning for the GSW project. I have actually gotten pretty far along in the concept phase at this point, and I have been soliciting opinions from select members of the community. I intend to open up my plans in the near future to get the rest of the community's feedback, but that is not the purpose of this news post.

I'd like to announce a design competition for the new GSW website. The GSW site has been the same stagnant, boring, unoriginal design ever since GSW was originally conceived. I think that the new GSW development calls for a new website, and I'd like some help and contributions from the community. Anyone with any graphic and/or web design skills can submit designs for the next two weeks (until October 1). I will then pick a winner from all the submissions.

I only require a graphic representation of the design be submitted, but it would be very helpful (if you have the ability) to have an HTML/CSS implementation to speed the up the process after selection of a winner. I would also prefer to have designs for multiple pages, and not just the home page, but if you only have time for one page, then the home page design will suffice. Requirements and descriptions of the desired pages can be found in the following PDF: http://www.goldensun-syndicate.net/GSW_Web...equirements.pdf

Please post any questions or comments in the comments here.

Update (9/30): Deadline extended until Monday, October 8, 2007.

I'm in, but the doc won't download. And I've got homework right now, and my PC is being an arse.

                yay. works!
btw Max, you say "GSW Site Design Competition"... So... where are the prize? You can't have a competition without giving people some incentives...
Who would compete in a competition with no rewards? (apart from your layout being used on the GSW site...)

EDIT: My suggestion (though I'm sure it isn't needed, but what the heck):
                1. Money
                2. GSW moderator privilidges
                3. Help in betatesting of GSW.

That'll make more people do some designs imo.

Well, that's just my suggestions... I'm sure there are more eligible suggestions ^__^. I'm just saying, besides your layout being used on the GSW site, why should someone participate in this competition? Maybe I sound a bit mean... but... I'm just being realistic?

Sorry Max for hijacking your topic from the main point. I'll end here.

This is GSW! Poeple should be doing it for the sake of seing it released sooner.

I wish I could paticipate, but all my class has done so far in website designing is looking at its features for 10 minuets :)

The competition is for the website design, not the actual coding.

                        Right?

Yes, it is a design contest. Having said that, as I mention in my post, it would be helpful if it was coded as well. But that is not strictly necessary. Also, if you only do an image, I need you to do multiple pages, since the content pages will probably look different from the main page (layout/organization-wise) which will look different from the gallery pages, etc.

As for prizes, I'm thinking that the top finalists will get onto the alpha/beta testing team, and the winner might become an in-game moderator.

Honestly, being given credit for makeing and/or codeing the design is rewarding enough, but of course, I'm not against anything else that might be included. :)

[EDIT] I'm about halfway finished with the graphic part.

I'm currently learning to properly use CSS within a designed lay-out. I'm not sure how long this contest lasts, but as soon as I know how to use it correctly, I will contribute my design.

Entree's must be in by October 1st. But this website has some good CSS tutorials and refrences if you need help. I always find myself back there when I'm working on a site and need a refrence.

At the half-way point of this "competition," I'd like to get a headcount of how many people are participating. So please post a reply if you are currently working on an entry, or if you intend to. If you have some preliminary work (such as a rough sketch or even an unfinished graphical design), then I'd love to see them via PM to get a sense of how things are going.

lawd, if you need to learn css etc for this competition then it isn't worth the effort. If you don't know what you're doing with the code, leave that to Max and focus on the actual design. The end result will be far superior and probably faster since Max will be able to convert your design into code faster than you can and at higher quality.

I'm sorry I didn't get around to making one, I wasted my week off uni sleeping and playing wow and then had to rush work this weekend... :P

Depending on how much work I get done this week I should be able to sit down on the weekend and work on a design for you. No earlier though. Loads of uni work to do and I'm falling behind =\

Well, Mr.T/Dude of Wind was the only GSS member who entered, which is a bit disappointing. Anticipating such a conclusion, I solicited some designs from friends of mine outside the GSS community as well, and one of them shows some hope. I'll hopefully have time this weekend to compare all the designs again, code the winner, and get it online. No promises though. So if anyone out there still wants to submit a design by the end of the week, my mind isn't set on anything yet.

I can code most site designs in a few hours to meet my own quality standards, and I would really rather do the final coding myself anyways. But if you want to do it for practice or whatever, then go ahead.

There were a few things that didn't quite look right after it was implemented that I've since fixed. Plus, you can never really have to much practice. ;)
