My suggestion on 'fixing' the Common Room SPAM.

How about having it, so at the top we click 'chat' (by the rules section) then we enter a chatroom like this one at the bottom, just way larger.

i'm in favour of anything that clears out the crap in the common room

perhaps something as simple as a shoutbox?

Hopefully GSW would be our chatroom.

WD brought up the point I was going to state. It would conflict with the purpose of GSW, though I'd be up for the idea of a "shoutbox" as a compromise (which to me sounds like a compromise between "posting" and "chatting"). Actually, I wouldn't mind seeing the Chatroom either (I actually agree with you Eugine, I think it's a great idea), it would just have to be removed when GSW is released.

err, at least I would think so. Any ideas?

I was gonna include in my post "well, until GSW is released" but I didn't want people to say "oh, GSW is neva gonna be released man"

As long as GSW keeps it's intentions as being an interactive chat room and not a big, ambitious game, I don't see a reason it wouldn't come out.

                Same.
A shoutbox isn't a bad idea, but I don;t think it'd be big enough to contain the possible amount of spam. Apparently, a single thread wasn't enough.

However, we never had a problem with the Common Room until recently. I'd like to see how the CR moderator thing turns out first.

GSW would be the best alternative though.

Yes, eventually GSW would be the ideal solution. Seeing as that is still several months away at the earliest, I'd be interested in considering a chat solution. I'm not a fan of shoutboxes, however, because they have time duration. A real-time chat disappears once people are done using it, and we don't have to worry about people coming later and seeing all the spam.

I don't have time this moment, but if anyone can find a simple chat tool for IPB, please let me know.

I don't know a whole lot about setting one up, but I think an IRC channel would work relatively well.

That would be nice if I could figure out how to use IRC. I know Firefox comes with an add-on called chatzilla that allows you to talk through IRC.

I think he means something like a live shoutbox. So kind of like MSN, except there's only one ongoing conversation and anybody can jump in at any time.

Another idea is to get everyone to switch to Firefox, and then use Chatsum. I tried to get this going before, but it fizzled out. It's pretty nifty, and even though it's dead, you should try it out.

                                              That's a good idea.

I signed up, and it's actually really pretty nifty. We should make this more public. Like a "INTRODUCING gssf chatroom"

The only thing I'm afraid of is that we'll have such a decrease in the common room, that it'll be pretty much non-existent.
