SPORE Your Personal Universe in a Box
#1
Posted 12 February 2008 - 08:49 PM
SPORE is being created by EA games and Maxis and is headed by Will Wright. It has been in production on and off for the past five years. This game is supposed to be the pinnacle of in-game customizing and sharing over the internet. You will get to create and evolve your own creature/alien/thing, design every facet of its appearance, behaviour, society, technology and buildings. Eventually you'll even be able to sculpt your own planets.
The best part? It finally has a release date! It will ship September seventh of this year. Check out the announcement: http://www.spore.com/screenshots.php (the quicktime video at the top of the page)

Spore will be using a modified version of digital rights management software SecuROM as copy protection, which will require authentication upon install and when online access is used. This system was announced after the originally planned system met opposition from the public, as it would have required authentication every ten days. It was also announced that Spore will be playable, after installation, without a disc.

It's said that all authentication will be done automatically in the background so you shouldn't even notice or realize it happening.

But still, what if you don't have access to the internet for 10+ days?
#25
Posted 23 May 2008 - 09:29 AM
The 10 days thing was on the old one.
But to answer your question, the way the old system worked that the game would seek authentication every 10 days. If you didn't play for two weeks, the game would want autentication when you started it. The game wouldn't shut itself off if you didn't play for 10 days if that's what you were thinking.

That's about 250 decillion. And that number isn't even taking into account how you mold the creature's body and where you place the parts. So even if two people decide to use the same parts on a creature, they can be placed in different areas on the creature in different ways.
So the number is OVER 250 decillion, the possibilities are quite practically infinite

You haven't been watching the game very closesly, huh. Part of the game will play like an RTS, part of it plays like a city sim, part of it plays like an action RPG, and hell, part of it plays like an RPG version of Fishy.
My biggest concern is that all the "levels" will feel too disconnected from each other and feel like bad, shallow, minigames of their respective genres.

Really like it so far, I've only played up to the end of the Creature phase and I'm still poking around to get everything and as much DNA points as I can before heading into Tribal. You can only evolve during the Creature phase, so I want the best creature possible for the rest of the game.

Yes, Tribal Phase was a bit disappointing. All the other stages were pretty sweet, even if the gameplay is somewhat limited outside of creating things up until the Space Phase, where you suddenly have almost TOO MUCH to do.

I think the Tribal Phase would have been better if it was more about researching and discovering/inventing technology, and conquering or befriending tribes was just a means to that end. It seemed a bit odd to me that you could go from a primitive, axe and spear wielding species to an advanced one complete with tanks and fleets of boats in the blink of an eye as soon as you hit the "advance" button in Tribal.
Also because in Tribal Phase, your goal is to rule your continent, right? But how come, even if you aggressively exterminate the other tribes, when you go to the Civilization Phase the other factions are suddenly unrelated to yours again and you need to control your continent once more? That's why it seems to me that developing technology as a goal in the Tribal Phase seems like it would have been a better choice for SPORE, in both a gameplay and simply logical sense.

Space Phase is... somewhat broken at the beginning. Some of the other species are FAR too hostile and they might very well be your neighbor, declaring war just for getting one star sytem too close and you forgot to introduce yourself. And you only have ****ty starter weapons. Hell, the Space Phase already has a bit of a learning curve as it is. At war with two guys right now. And these guys will attack every 5 minutes. I missed a Grox encounter because I was trying to defend myself from two factions, pirates, and an ecological disaster.
-.-; I'm about to take down the more aggressive one though (who happens to be fairly weak I've found out) and I'll get some allies and take down the other, who is fairly tough, and maybe I'll start having more fun.
But yeah, they really should give some sort of warning about that in the tutorials or something about how inconceivably aggressive other factions can be, OR just patch it so that they have to have a good reason for being mean, besides putting a toe too close to their one-city-barely-hospitable planet. I'd write more but it's late. Maybe later if I remember.

SPORE's worst enemy is the massive hype for it. I don't think anyone predicted it to be as great as let on. If Will Wright had kept previews for the game on the down-low until he was sure that he had a released date he could keep, I bet everybody would think that SPORE is the best that it could be.

It turns out what I was right, except that these "minigames" are still fun to play, since (with the exception of the Tribal Stage) you can customize almost everything. We're even promised a Plant Editor in a future expansion of SPORE.
Yes, I was definitely excited for SPORE, but skeptically so. As a result, I can't say I'm exactly disappointed in SPORE. I've already clocked about 40 hours in the game, which is crazy, it doesn't feel like I've played it for that long. SPORE could have been a lot more, but then, isn't that true of just about every game? Think back to all the heavy-hyped releases earlier this year, MGS4, GTA4, SSBB, did any of them really live up to their hype?
Customizing all your crap is cool. And seeing what other people have made in your game is very, very cool. But remain hopeful that expansions will add a bit of variety and depth to the early stages, as they are a bit repetitive. If they don't, then wait for an inevitable SPORE 2.

This expansion actually sounds really promising. It focuses on the Space Stage, and it gives the player the option to actually step out of his spaceship and explore planets personally without the lame little scouter guy.
Basically, think Creature Stage in Space Stage. But with more RPG elements.
As in, you can actually talk to other creatures on the planet with branching dialogue and quests that players make themselves. This could be a lot of fun if it's what it's promised, this time...
Heck, the amount of customization we have for planets now seems to warrant the purchase. Rather than those lame tools that plop down pre-made canyons and rivers and mountains and stuff, and when you put down plants the game makes it's own wooded areas for your planet, we can actually make them ourselves! Also better looking towns. Really good stuff.
