That's sad, yet heartwarming, and if anything, I feel some relief. There are still people who'd put their lives out on the line for someone else; we need more people like that.
Yet I'm confused, how did holding his little girl in the air keep her from being killed? Was it after they crashed or before?

And surely before hand if he had enough time to lift her up, he must have had enough time to dive out of the way with his daughter.

He probably ran towards her and used the momentum to swing her into the air.
