Emo. Probably the most overabused word in the English language.

Is anyone in agreeance? Seriously, the word 'emo' and the way it is used as a constant steryotype really annoys the hell out of me. Everywhere I go, I hear:
Cloud is emo
Squall is emo
Heero is emo
Sestuna is emo
Mickey Mouse is emo
Fur*** is emo
Shadow is emo
Cutters are emo
Ninja is emo
Emo emo emo.
Honestly. The term 'emo' is by far the most overused and retarded word in the English language. As said by Mark Prindle himself,
" I don't recognize that attribution. I've never recognized "emo" as a genre of music. I always thought it was the most retarded term ever. I know there is this generic commonplace that every band that gets labeled with that term hates it. They feel scandalized by it. But honestly, I just thought that all the bands I played in were punk rock bands. The reason I think it's so stupid is that - what, like the Bad Brains weren't emotional? What - they were robots or something? It just doesn't make any sense to me."
—Mark Prindle, "Interview with Guy Picciotto". MarkPrindle.com (2003).
Does a person who rarely or never shows any emotion have to be labeled 'emo'?
No. Cause 'emo' is a shortened version of 'emotional', which generally means that a person would be bursting with feeling. Or full of feeling. Either or.
If anything, the more appropriate term would be 'unemotional'.
Emo may have been intended as a term for emotionally charged punk rock music, but ever since the discvery of the bending of words and their literal definitions, 'emo' has been used and abused incorrectly and far too much.
Bottom line, just because someone doesn't show emotion as much as one would want, like me, for example, doesn't mean the term 'emo' is correct for them. They're not robots.
Somewhat of a looping rant is over now. I know I'll probably recieve generally negative views over this because 'emo' is a trend that has grown on everyone during the past few decades and people have learned to accept and absorb it into their social lives. Maybe I won't. I for one, just don't like the way the term is being used.

grammer is fer losers. non-grammer is teh lulz???
but really, your analysis of the word emo, and it's place in the music industry was very weak. many bands PRIDE themseves on being emo. it's not nessecarily a bad thing. hawthorne heights are allright, but they are clearly emo. do some research first kid.

Because the accoutrements and garb are very easy and cheap to obtain, it makes the style accessible to you. In earlier times emo was a generally male-dominated subculture with very few females observed at shows and events (mostly because all present looked like girls anyway).
Now, however, due to the ease of obtainment of the requisite style items, many females have become involved in the subculture. Please see the above photo for an illustration of a typical specimen. There may be no easily discernible differences between the standard teenager and someone involved in the emo scene.
Often, participants are referred to as "emo kids," "emo***s," just "***s," or any combination of these. Rednecks often refer to the participants simply as "wrist-cuttin' hippies". Normal people often say that "emo" is short for "gay trannys that listen to bad music". Everyone else calls them "failures at life".
Emo kids are a common plague on sites such as MySpace, Facebook, Bebo and Youtube as these sites offer the perfect digital mediums for them to display their tormented souls to the world and be sad gits who fail at life and always will.

So...Atreyu isn't emo but Hawthrone Heights is. Have you even listened to them or are you basing that arguement on nothing as per usual? I could label AILD emo simply because of their name.

Someone who is overly enthusiastic or just bursting with joy could be labeled as emo, 'cause hey, they're emotional.
Of course, I think the whole "emo trend" would die, and little kids would become so very confused as why MTV and Myspace is calling happy people emo. Alas, I think the term is accepted despite it's paradoxical meaning just so the stupid people in society can continue leading their blissfully ignorant lives. :]

You're right about Atreyu being heavier then HH, I can't even defend that if I wanted too. I see where you're coming from, if you only listened to HH's softer stuff then yea it's pretty much, well just soft crap.
And of course Atreyu are in you're face, it's a hardcore band, that'd be like wondering why Hidden in Plain View isn't as 'in your face' as Killswitch.

You'd be surprised as to how little people actually know what an emo is.
Your second sentence is obvious, but it's still very true. For example, the word "moron" was an official term for anyone with an IQ below 50 and "idiot" for anyone with an IQ below 25, but those overtime became insults. :P

My point is, when people don't get why not getting why bands don't get why other people don't know what emo means, it causes confusion. And confusion causes misunderstandings.
See how my previously conusing post caused you to misunderstand it as spam? That's my point right there.

Anyhow, it's not debatable that certain words have strayed from their original meaning to become insults ("Retard" anyone? It can be a really offensive word considering that you're saying people who are mentally handicaped -mentally retarded- are bad.)
But "emo" is a little different because it's not so much used as an insult but a method of classification. (Though there are those who would say it's an insult). I guess it's sort of like Klenex...even though not every tissue is of the klenex brand, we still call it that. and the opposite is true for emo. Even though happy people can be considered emo, we only peg it to those who look as if their whole ensemble has come from Hot Topic (which is an awesome store, btw) and wear dark black eyeliner around their eyes.
It's profiling, in a way, but we all know that people are too unique to be profiled; it just makes things simpler for some, I guess.
