Macs aren't so bad and are probably the best laptops you can get in general.

Well I can't really help you, buuut Toasty will probably have something to say.

Mac hardware is really reliable and sturdy.

If you don't like Mac OS X, then just install XP/Vista on it. Simple as that.

If you must have non-mac hardware for whatever reason, go look at Lenovo's line. They've got good stuff (and at somewhat more affordable prices too).

Lenovo are awful. I have a lenovo laptop and it's just so bad. It has the worst virtual memory in the world, it's massive for a laptop and they're so slow. You cant use them for anything other than internet browsing or they just shrivel up and die.

I have two Lenovo Thinkpad laptops, have never had any problems with them, and love them both. Perhaps their consumer line laptops aren't as good, but I recommend Thinkpads to anyone looking for a good laptop. $650 may not be enough though, that's more in the netbook price bracket, which I'm not too familiar with.

                      And how old is it?

Also, I'm assuming you don't know, but there's a huge difference between virtual memory and physical memory. Virtual memory can be as massive as you have hard drive space. It's your page file. It's also really slow.

Like Max, I can't say much for their consumer laptops, but I've heard nothing but good things about Thinkpads, and I can say from experience that they're very well built.

However, they aren't very flashy looking.

You're not going to be playing games on a $650 laptop, I'll tell you that right now.

Unless they're just Flash applets, those are fine.

In which case, probably best to not get a mac if you're not going to be using for any serious design or business work. If you bought a mac just for general use, it'd be a massive waste of the capabilities of what it can do. In which case, you're probably not looking for something with amazing specs, about average so it can handle most things that a laptop should be able to, but cant take the strain of more upper-end software.

I wouldn't go for Lenovo just due to personal experience, though it might just be because mine is going on 3 years old now.

In which case, probably best to not get a mac if you're not going to be using for any serious media use or work.

                                          Fixed.

Macs are beasts when it comes to anything related to media. The media software for Macs are abundant and well made.

If you're doing buisness stuff then a Mac is horrible, solely because it pales in comparison to the buisness related programs available on windows.

And I'd say it's just your experience. I consider Lenovo to be the best non-mac laptop manufacturer out there.

If you're looking for something on a budget, get a Gateway or an HP. Not a fan of them (used to love Gateway, but not anymore), but they're better than Dell IMO.
