Is it just me, or does firefox make your computer far slower than it was before? When I was running chrome it took seconds to start up, but now wire firefox it took the best part of 3 minutes. Any reason why?

Not really, unless you've got a bunch of spyware now or something.
As far as I know, Firefox doesn't start up any services of its own until you open it up, so it shouldn't slow down your boot-up times.
I would run a spyware scan, and then, if you know anything about the services running in the background of your computer, disable any of them that you don't need.
I know I typed up a list of unnecessary services on here somewhere. Can't remember where, though.
[EDIT] Bingo
[EDIT 2] There's also some other things you can prevent from starting up in the tab next to services labeled "startup"

Aside from the stuff you said, I have a load of apps running on FF that I downloaded last night'; would that be why?

That could slow down your computer, and make Firefox itse;f take longer to load, but it shouldn't take your computer take longer to boot up.
Unless you have Firefox set to open up on system startup.
[EDIT] I think I read your question wrong. Yes, more plugins installed in Firefox will absolutely make it take longer to start up. After all, instead of just having to load itself into the system's memory, it has to load itself and all of the plugins you have installed.
That, and Firefox is more of a beast than Chrome, which is fairly light, and thus doesn't take very long to start up in the first place.

Yeah chrome starts pretty much instantly.
Ahh well it's the price I pay for awesomeness.
