And as we saw at the end of the E3 demo that closed with the Normandy in flames and Shepard drifting off into the gravity well of a nearby planet, survival might not be the end you find in Mass Effect 2.
WAT. Shepard must live. He must liiiiiiiiiive.

It'll be more like Crackdowns targetting I'm guessing.
Remember that crackdown came before Fallout 3 with body-targetting. Plus Fallout 3's was not only not real time, it was in slo-mo, so you could crack out a lot more shots than your enemy can. With real time, I doubt it'll make too much of a difference.
But yeah, the "Keep shepard alive" concept is original, but I too am not so sure on it quite yet. It all depends on the steps needed to keep him alive. I mean, I want to keep him alive but I dont want to have to use a guide and ruin the story just to keep him alive. I'll probably just have a first play-through where I just see what the story is and see what happens, then if he dies on that, start a second file to try keep him living.

I do officially like how the Mass Effect series is turning out. It's series like this that show games can be serious not unlike a movie, or book. Bioware, hats off.
Although holy **** how will they pull off Mass Effect 3?

Players who have not played the first Mass Effect will start a new character in Mass Effect 2, and will be brought up to speed on the story elements that have taken place thus far in the series. Hudson also states that characters from the previous game will come back, provided that they were not killed.[21]
When transferring a file from the first Mass Effect, players have the option to change their class to a different one. For example, if the player wanted to play as an Engineer instead of an Infiltrator, the player may change their character's class while still importing the choices made in the first game.[20]

The Professor - Mordin - Sentinel
The Quarian - Tali - Engineer
The Justicar - Samara - Adept or Vanguard
The Assassin - Thane - Vanguard

-The player's treatment of Conrad Verner.
-Whether or not the player completed the UNC: Asari Diplomacy sidequest.
-Whether the player chose to allow the Alliance to conduct experiments on Nirali Bhatia's body.
How in the hell does he matter?
Edit: "In a recent interview, Casey Hudson referred to Conrad Verner as "Commander Verner" which could indicate that if he survived the events of Mass Effect that he has joined the Alliance."

AND MY AX-
It removes the things in ME1 that weren't so great and replaces them with slightly better systems (still not perfect). The old inventory system is gone (thank fuck) but the new one is only marginally better. Basically ME1= RPG with TPS elements. ME2= TPS with RPG elements.

It's also got more cluttered of a skill book and is a total loot fest. You've gotta manage armor upgrades as well as weapon upgrades and ammo types. All of this was perfectly manageable until ME2 came out, but post-ME2, which streamlined a ton of shit, it's all really annoying.

I wouldn't say it makes the game worse, though, I'd only just barely classify ME1 as an RPG as it is, and most of those RPG aspects were inelegantly designed. ME2 is a much better game than ME1, but if Bioware intended Mass Effect to be an RPG then they should at least bring ME1's character building back into ME3, or something similar to it.

Meh, I have to reload to an earlier save anyway and I'll do the IFF quest later to be safe. Accidentally initiated Jack's romance plot. Bitch has issues that I'd like to work out, but frankly I think that she would benefit more from a platonic relationship with a man than a romantic one - she needs to learn to make friends without benefits. Maybe the writers don't think the same way, we'll see.
Is it even possible to hear the whole story of some the characters without pursuing their romance plots? Tali hasn't talked to me since I turned her down (lightly). It sounds like she has more to say but keeps saying she's busy. Tali is an extremely likable character, but I dunno, I'm not a shipper but Shep + Tali just doesn't seem right. I like Kelly. She's cute and feeds my fish.
Garrus stopped talking to me after his loyalty mission, too. Bastard's too busy just "doing calibrations" because I'm not a chick. Oh well, that's realistic I guess. Hardly anyone is a bro these days.
The only two characters that I seem to have maxed out the stories are Jacob (who wants to get loud and spill drinks on the citadel, he's a true bro unlike Garrus) and Grunt, so... I dunno.

Uhh yeah try and do as many side missions as possible before getting the IFF because it essentially takes you into the endgame period. Doesn't prevent you from doing more consequences without your crew but there will be...consequences.
And to hear the whole story without romancing people, just choose the 'neutral' option. The ones that pursue the romance are usually quite obvious so avoid and go down the neutral route.
Following the loyalty missions, some still have loads to talk about and some have nothing:
Garrus wont really talk to you much more.
Thane has LOADS to talk about his history
Mordin has a sizeable chunk (and a song :D)
Miranda doesn't have much and is a fairly boring character anyway
Tali has a sizeable amount but romance is needed
Jack has a sizeable amount, and is possible without romance
Jacob is a bro and will make it clear when theres nothing left to talk about (as you've discovered)
Grunt does the same as Jacob essentially
Samara has a moderate amount
Legion has loads to talk about, I dont think I've ever maxed out his conversation options across 4 playthroughs (granted because I always forget he's in the AI core and you acquire him quite late)
Zaeed doesn't really count but some of his trophies are interesting
Kasumi, like Zaeed doesn't have actual options but you can discuss her trophies with her as well which is cool.
Overall, I'd say Thane has the most to talk about, and the most interesting backstory. I'm loving the fact that Bioware has started an 'unofficial campaign' over their facebook group to determine his fate for ME3.

Now, Rockstar did DLC right with Red Dead Redemption. Undead Nightmare (amazing!!), numerous expansions to multiplayer free roam, and it could've been even better with free updates if Microsoft didn't have a horribly greedy policy to the way developers patch their games on the 360. (there's a reason why DLC is free for L4D on PC and not on 360, and why Valve has Steamworks on PS3 but not 360)

Historians and astronomers alike are abuzz tonight over a new paper published by Dr. Amanda Kenson of the University of Arcturus. Her team claims that by testing the dust trapped in the gravity wells around a mass relay, and comparing its composition to that of dust clouds in the same system, scientists can create a timeline of when the relay passed through the dust. Her conclusion? “Only a small fraction of the mass effect relays date back 50,000 years,” she writes, “The majority are far older, indicating they were created by a species predating even the Protheans.” Dr. Aurana T’Meles of the University of Serrice met the information with skepticism: “While Dr. Kenson’s methods appear sound, the asari tried a similar procedure centuries ago and discounted it. What civilization could have spanned the galaxy for not thousands, but millions of years? If this were the case, we should have found mountains of evidence of their passing. Where is this species now?”
