I personally am fond of the silent protagonist, because it effectively eliminates the possibility that the main character will be an annoying douchebag and I like the Yes/No prompts.

Others feel that the silent protagonist hurt the story and eliminates character development. Not that anybody particularly developed in the GS games except maybe Ivan.

What's everybody's opinions on the protagonist likely being silent again?

I personally like the fact that he is a silent one. Because although there are a few games where there is a speaking protagonist who does a good job, overall they tend to cry out the most ridiculous nonsense a man has ever heard. The advantage of silent main characters is simply that he can't make any retarded comments. The Yes/No which is added gives a nice touch of saying: "Hey man, you're in command." So even though he cannot, or will not speak, we still get a chance to speak trough him. I'd say leave it like this.

Speaking of which, am I the only person who didn't think Tidus of FFX was an annoying douchebag? At least he didn't pause constantly like Yuna's voice actor. :/

Anyway, I think it really depends on the game in question. From what I've played it seems to be more of a trend on handheld RPGs, since it's just you and the game, and less with console epics, which have the technology to play out more like movies.

I like the silence as well. My biggest problem with FFTA was that Marche was a huge pussy. Also that the story was a calamitous, fourth wall-breaking abortion that it pained my soul to no end to see it paired with such an innovative combat interface, but that's another story.

"I'd pick Final Fantasy. That's my favourite!" =D

Jittery text and speech bubbles work fine.

I was quite fond of Isaac being a mute in the first game, but when the transition to The Lost Age came, and it was now Felix the mute... it was weird for me, since in GS, he was talking alot... then Isaac in TLA became chatty... and it just mixed up my head...

So, if anything is done for GSDS, I want Voice Acting. It's the natural step up. And I don't want the main character mute. Give Isaac a voice!! >=o

I doubt it would even fit on the game card. They'd have to use some Apple-esque speech algorithm, and I'd rather not be surrounded by characters who all sound like Stephen Hawking.

Or they could do cut-scenes with voice acting then in game use text bubbles, kind of like Kingdom Hearts will use.

It's the GS style. I can't see Nintendo/Camelot making us wait all this time for a new Golden Sun and then screwing it up by trying to make it 'innovative,' or something like that.

That's one of the things I think is wrong with games for the DS. Developers seem to think you HAVE to utilize the touch screen in some way, and come up with a ridiculous feature or way of playing the game. **coughstarfoxdscough**

Hmz personally I don't like the silent protagonist, but I'm so used to it after the two originals that I prefer one in GSDS as well. They shouldn't screw up with voice acting, which could totally ruin the magic of a game (look at Eternal Sonata for instance, horrible).

About being 'innovative', I think some new touchscreen controls would be nice but not really necessary; I think a d-pad works the best eventually.

I think silent protagonists are unneccesary. I know it keeps people from thinking that the main character is a douchebag, but there are other ways that could be prevented -Such as not making the main character a douchebag.

Take Isaac and Felix for example. Because they are only silent in the game they star in, we know both of their personalities. Now, how many people complain about this? Very few. The majority of the complaints are regarding the lack of consistency between the two characters, which could have been avoided by having both of them talk in both games.

Plus, it would save us from those awkward moments where Garet/Kraden have to stop the conversation to ask you what you think.
