For me it's tough to say... and I still have to play AC2, Dragon Age, and Borderlands one day but those probably won't be until the very beginning of '10 or late late 09 for me.
And it's close between Demons Soul's and Uncharted 2! It's addicting, heart-pounding innovation versus tried-and-true, simply a blast to play, near-flawless singleplayer and fun, simple multiplayer!
But I think I'm going with Demons Soul's taking everything into account: it's simply the kind of game you don't see very often, it's very challenging (brutally so) and yet it makes you come back for more, and you have fun doing it. While Uncharted 2 is of amazing quality and is what all sequels strive to be, simply put, many games are more or less just like it. It just happened to do it better than all of them.
Both are really AMAZING games though with tremendous value between the both of them for sixty bucks.

Uncharted 2 or Killing Floor. Yes, Killing Floor. L4D2 isn't out yet though. =p
My personal pick for garbage of the year is Borderlands.

Not necessarily, but I don't understand how someone could get addicted to a bad game.
I'm an MMO addict turned FPS addict. You do the math. Anyway, I enjoy the game simply because it's fun to play with friends. If I had to review it in detail, it wouldn't be a very nice read. xD

Here I thought the game of the year had to have come out during the current year. :<

Borderlands, because games dont have to be hyped to be good.
And yes PDM, its not perfect but it's been the most fun I've had this year compared to other lackluster titles like Prototype, which got old within a day, and Red Faction 2 which had so many AI flaws it took considerable willpower to finish it.
Borderlands is my favourite because while alone, it's just a giant grind fest, but with 3 other friends, you can play for hours on end before getting bored. The first time I played with friends, I was about 15 levels lower than them and therefore was killed by enemies in one shot, and could do fuck all damage to enemies, which made it so much more fun. It made me genuinely quite sad when I got to the end of it, because I realised that when MW2 comes out, everybody will be playing that and I'll have nobody to BL's co-op with.
However best arcade title, without a doubt, is Battlefield: 1943 because although only multiplayer, it's so ridiculously fun and I did not stop playing for about a week solid. It still ranks top of my list on "games I've laughed the most at while playing", with Borderlands in second. Shadow Complex and 'Splosion man take 2nd and 3rd
However, this is only for games I've played so far this year. I'd imagine ACII will hit pretty hard, but I'll judge that after I've played it.

I'd have to wait until Christmas because I've bought few games that were actually released this year.
