Thinking about mod chipping it.
Any suggestions for a mod chip, and/or anyone know someone with another broken PS2? (preferably with a usable DVD tray).

...For the most part.
But there's a ton of PS2 games I've wanted to play (mostly RPG's), and the thing was only $5. It was practically an impulse buy.

Ever heard of homebrew?
Besides, I want to try and see if I can push the resolution output up to 1080p. If I can do that, I'll have no reason to emulate on my computer.

On another note, I would've given you a PS2 Slim for 2.50. Your loss.

Either that, or design a PS2 emulator for the PS3 (probably in Linux).

What makes you say that? Besides his outward appearance, I suppose. Though it's not THAT douchebaggy.

So he's a douchebag and an attention whore for announcing that it was possible to play pirated games with his exploit, which he "claims" his hacking had nothing to do with. Riiight. I have no problem with nerds that want to hack things for fun or just learn how these things work, but for the love of god, don't post the steps to your exploit on the internet for everyone to use. Things get worse when you hack them, not better. Just look at PC gaming now.
Although hacking your PS3 isn't as easy as jailbreaking your iPhone or tinkering with the battery for your PSP, so I don't think the PS3 hack will catch on as much as those. But he's still a douchebag.

Sony is stupid for trying to get rid of the Other OS feature in the first place. Sure, it'll probably open up a realm for piracy, but the fact that it now has hacked firmware to re-enable it is even worse as far as pirating goes. Besides that, if he didn't do it, someone else would have with the sole intention of pirating.
And keep in mind, geohot didn't put together the hack to re-enable the Other OS feature for pirates. He did it for those who were using it for legit reasons.
So to re-iterate, I don't condone piracy myself (though I'm guilty of it from time to time, though usually only for programs that I require, like an incredibly useful partition manager/editor and my anti-virus software), but geohot shouldn't be labeled as a pirate, or a helper of pirates.
If you do that, you might as well call the guys behind Cain & Abel hackers, even though the purpose for that program is to do network diagnostics.

You realize I've been using your steam account for like 2 years right?

That's not a problem. At least, it isn't one yet. And even if it becomes one, someone will just end up creating a work around for it.

The person who wrote that article is made out of the concentrated essence of retarded (and sarcasm, but that's sarcastic gamer for you).
He doesn't know what he's talking about.
What's worse, he was stupid enough to use BBC as a source for a quite complicated technological related piece of news. Not exactly the best move there.
Obviously the first hacking attempt is going to be ugly. Most of those wires are just for gaining information required to put together a hack, so a completely finished product wouldn't look that bad.
All that said, Hotz is just providing the tools/information required to exploit the PS3 in numerous ways. If people are going to use it to pirate, then that's their problem.
Like I said earlier, it's like Cain & Abel. You can easily use Cain & Abel to hack into WiFi networks, and do numerous things far worse than pirating. It's an easily obtainable program, and the only thing keeping people from hacking into networks with it is a somewhat steep learning curve (for the average joe), and some cash for a special WiFi adapter (which is something like $50 iirc).
Though hacking the PS3 probably goes against Sony's EULA, and it almost certainly circumvents copyright protection, if he's not doing it for the sake of piracy, but rather for the sake of homebrew and giving the console more useful features, then in my eyes, he's in the right.

Anyway, we reflowed it.
It frikkin' actually worked. I mean, HOLY CRAP. Still can't even believe it.
So now we're gonna get a bunch of broken 360's off Ebay for 30-something dollars a piece, repair them, and resell them for around $200 or so. Also plan on doing repairs locally for somewhere around $30. We were originally going to charge $75, but then I realized there was someone in the next town over doing it for $30.
We also plan on doing this for graphics cards (already did so for one of mine, and now it works beautifully), and possibly for PS3's which have the YLoD.
Either way, we plan on turning it into a part-time business of sorts, and basically use it as a second income. Splitting the profits in half.
All of this of course means that I can now get my hands on a 360 and some nice graphics cards for dirt cheap, and possibly even a PS3 too.
Speaking of which, the friend who outsourced the 360 repair to me and my other friend found some PS3's for $60 at a police impound auction. They're the old fat ones, likely with hardware emulation.
Boy does it ever pay to be a freaking genius hardware nerd with connections. :D
So yeah, if you guys get any broken 360's, let me know, and we can probably work something out (i.e. shipping it over here, my friend and I fixing it, and sending it back to you. Payment would likely be over PayPal).

Friend of mine is in the Red shirt. He's also the guy who gave me and my other friend that 360 we reflowed.
If I'm lucky though, I might make close to $100 off this hack, since it took a LONG ASS TIME to put into action.

And keep in mind that's not my computer desk. That's just my work bench. Though my actual computer desk isn't much to ride home about either. Save for all the hardware that's sitting on it.
Anyway, I want and revised the layout of the EEPROM to DB-9 Serial interface (the stuff on the breadboard in the second pic). It's a lot cleaner now and easier to modify. Which is kinda hard to do since it's already so incredibly simple. :\
