So, a pal of mine from youth group had an old PS2 with a broken disc tray, and he sold it to me for 5 bucks. This is a steal, because with my mad skillz, it's easy to repair.

    Thinking about mod chipping it.

Any suggestions for a mod chip, and/or anyone know someone with another broken PS2? (preferably with a usable DVD tray).

What exactly are you gonna do with a PS2 anyway? Play some rad Call of Duty 1?

Heck no. Console FPS's are GAY.
          ...For the most part.

But there's a ton of PS2 games I've wanted to play (mostly RPG's), and the thing was only $5. It was practically an impulse buy.

I don't think Ps2 games are worth enough these days to worry about mod chipping.

What he said. And you can only play one game at a time. So if you're paying 10 bucks for a game and (at the fastest) you finish it in two weeks, that's 20 bucks a month. That's rental cheap, and you get the replay value.

I'm not going to get a mod chip for free games. <_<

                Ever heard of homebrew?

Besides, I want to try and see if I can push the resolution output up to 1080p. If I can do that, I'll have no reason to emulate on my computer.

Half of me wants to insult you for even considering doing this. The other half wishes I was as smart as you.

On another note, I would've given you a PS2 Slim for 2.50. Your loss.

It is backwards compatible. Or at least, it will be eventually. All someone has to do is release a hacked firmware update with the software emulation in place.

Either that, or design a PS2 emulator for the PS3 (probably in Linux).

If I'm not mistaken, the option for other OS was removed recently for the PS3... as for software emulation, I've been hoping for it, would make things a lot simpler.

There's already a hacked firmware update in the works to re-enable the other OS feature. Should be available pretty soon if it isn't already.

Ya PS3 Slims are are capable of playing PS2 games, as found by geohot (douchebag) who was also the first to jailbreak an iPhone. I can't see why Sony couldn't just make the PS3 play PS2 games without driving the cost of the system up if a hacker could find a way to make the PS3 emulate PS2 games in five weeks.

I bet the reason is $$$ as Sony creates a PS2 store on the PSN...

I'm kind of anti-hackers and stuff at the moment because I hate pirates. And I know there's a fair amount of unashamed pirates on this board... hell, even I do it, though almost exclusively for those DLC packs/expansions of games that should've been part of the core game (you know the ones I mean) or older PC games that would otherwise be difficult to find. But this douchebag, and this is only one of the reasons that he's a douchebag, is why the Other OS feature was removed in the latest firmware update for the PS3. Sony was afraid of, wait for it... pirates! I'd never use the Other OS feature personally, but it sucks for those who used it legitimately.

So he's a douchebag and an attention whore for announcing that it was possible to play pirated games with his exploit, which he "claims" his hacking had nothing to do with. Riiight. I have no problem with nerds that want to hack things for fun or just learn how these things work, but for the love of god, don't post the steps to your exploit on the internet for everyone to use. Things get worse when you hack them, not better. Just look at PC gaming now.

Although hacking your PS3 isn't as easy as jailbreaking your iPhone or tinkering with the battery for your PSP, so I don't think the PS3 hack will catch on as much as those. But he's still a douchebag.

Go read his blog. He doesn't do it for piracy. Heck, he's even stated numerous times on his blog that anyone looking for pirating tooks and stuff should go elsewhere.

Sony is stupid for trying to get rid of the Other OS feature in the first place. Sure, it'll probably open up a realm for piracy, but the fact that it now has hacked firmware to re-enable it is even worse as far as pirating goes. Besides that, if he didn't do it, someone else would have with the sole intention of pirating.

And keep in mind, geohot didn't put together the hack to re-enable the Other OS feature for pirates. He did it for those who were using it for legit reasons.

So to re-iterate, I don't condone piracy myself (though I'm guilty of it from time to time, though usually only for programs that I require, like an incredibly useful partition manager/editor and my anti-virus software), but geohot shouldn't be labeled as a pirate, or a helper of pirates.

If you do that, you might as well call the guys behind Cain & Abel hackers, even though the purpose for that program is to do network diagnostics.

There's already a hacked firmware update in the works to re-enable the other OS feature. Should be available pretty soon if it isn't already.

Good luck getting online with hacked firmware releases.

Well, this is my source. It lists it's source (BBC) but doesn't give a link to it to the article, but either way, playing pirated games is one of the bullet points to what geohotz exploit can do.

You realize I've been using your steam account for like 2 years right?

He doesn't know what he's talking about.

What's worse, he was stupid enough to use BBC as a source for a quite complicated technological related piece of news. Not exactly the best move there.

Obviously the first hacking attempt is going to be ugly. Most of those wires are just for gaining information required to put together a hack, so a completely finished product wouldn't look that bad.

All that said, Hotz is just providing the tools/information required to exploit the PS3 in numerous ways. If people are going to use it to pirate, then that's their problem.

Like I said earlier, it's like Cain & Abel. You can easily use Cain & Abel to hack into WiFi networks, and do numerous things far worse than pirating. It's an easily obtainable program, and the only thing keeping people from hacking into networks with it is a somewhat steep learning curve (for the average joe), and some cash for a special WiFi adapter (which is something like $50 iirc).

Though hacking the PS3 probably goes against Sony's EULA, and it almost certainly circumvents copyright protection, if he's not doing it for the sake of piracy, but rather for the sake of homebrew and giving the console more useful features, then in my eyes, he's in the right.

So a friend of mine and I got a broken 360 (RRoD) from another, mutual friend of ours to fix, which was given to him by some other guy who wanted it fixed.

                                                      Anyway, we reflowed it.

It frikkin' actually worked. I mean, HOLY CRAP. Still can't even believe it.

So now we're gonna get a bunch of broken 360's off Ebay for 30-something dollars a piece, repair them, and resell them for around $200 or so. Also plan on doing repairs locally for somewhere around $30. We were originally going to charge $75, but then I realized there was someone in the next town over doing it for $30.

We also plan on doing this for graphics cards (already did so for one of mine, and now it works beautifully), and possibly for PS3's which have the YLoD.

Either way, we plan on turning it into a part-time business of sorts, and basically use it as a second income. Splitting the profits in half.

All of this of course means that I can now get my hands on a 360 and some nice graphics cards for dirt cheap, and possibly even a PS3 too.

Speaking of which, the friend who outsourced the 360 repair to me and my other friend found some PS3's for $60 at a police impound auction. They're the old fat ones, likely with hardware emulation.

Boy does it ever pay to be a freaking genius hardware nerd with connections. :D

So yeah, if you guys get any broken 360's, let me know, and we can probably work something out (i.e. shipping it over here, my friend and I fixing it, and sending it back to you. Payment would likely be over PayPal).

                                                          Sounds like a plan.

to be honest as far as most broken 360's go they aren't that hard to repair. Most of the 360's issues circle around the Disc Drive and those gosh durn E-74 codes that are ridiculous to fix with no sautering table. If you can get the knack down of figuring out what exactly the problem is (disc drive or other wise) then you have a hell of a money maker there <3

The idea is to get mainly ones that have the over heating problem, since reflowing is probably one of the easiest things ever to do.

I'm not so sure I'd want ot mess around with the other ones. :\

Though it certainly wouldn't be a bad idea.

And keep in mind that's not my computer desk. That's just my work bench. Though my actual computer desk isn't much to ride home about either. Save for all the hardware that's sitting on it.

Anyway, I want and revised the layout of the EEPROM to DB-9 Serial interface (the stuff on the breadboard in the second pic). It's a lot cleaner now and easier to modify. Which is kinda hard to do since it's already so incredibly simple. :\
