In my opinion... it does not. Surely it look good, but... not amazing. "Amazing" - that's what this game looked like year ago. The current-year trailer disappointed me a little (talking of graphics). Anyway - it's going to be produced this holiday (in Japan), that's great news!!

I'm not exceptionally hot on the 3D-graphics either. Sprites definitely looked cleaner and a more natural presentation. However, keep in mind that these graphics in the trailer were on a big screen at the E3 conference. The game will look much nicer on an actual DS system in its native resolution screen.

Anyway, I've also noticed a new track playing, which fits perfectly to the franchise climate. And I'm nearly 100% sure, that again, Sakuraba will make the soundtrack. Great news imho.

P.S.: Oh, and we've got our heroes' names: Matthew, Karis and Terrell (at least that's what the stats bars say).

It definitely sounds Motoi Sakuraba-caliber, which is astounding. The soundtrack for the previous games (we can actually call them that now!) was phenomenal and rivaled that of most console RPGs, so it's good to see the same quality of composition, even if it's just a trailer.

To my best guess, I think that would be the new character (whose name from the battle screens apparently is 'Matthew'), and this game seems to feature a whole new cast following the old one. He'll be the 'Isaac' of the game in spirit, though, as the protagonist, sort of how all Zelda games have Link as the main character, even though it's technically a different Link each time.


EDIT: You noticed them too, great. I only caught 'Matthew' during the conference, did not see 'Karis' or 'Terrell'. Interesting names.

Not sure why everyone's busting the graphics. I thought it looked great for being on a big screen. You can count on Camelot to use somewhat limited hardware and still make amazing looking art.

Can't believe the main characters name is Matthew. Holy crap this is sooo friggn sweet. Way better than i expected. I'm practically shaking after seeing the trailer. I'm not sure whether I can last another six months. I need some more footage of the game!

I completely agree with being underwhelmed by the graphics, but I did remind myself that DS games look much better on the actual screen and I'm sure this situation is no different.

Other than that, the story seems decent, the summons look beautiful, and I can't wait for Christmas. WD pointed out that GS isn't one of the big Nintendo franchises. Therefore, I would be surprised if we get more trailers, screenshots, etc. then what we have now - unless they decide to do a television campaign like they did for GS and TLA.

This. That was my first impression as well. So these are descendents, obviously of Garet and Isaac...wonder who the Momma's are. (heh)

Also, as for storyline, I wonder if the elemental lighthouses will be involved again...definitely some interesting looking places. 0:22 of the trailer looks like either Xian (where you meet fezhi) or Lama Temple (where you meet Master Hamma). The puzzle around 0:45 looks to be a classic lighthouse "moving statue" sort of thing, though the statues look like men instead of females (random observation?). I could pick apart this trailer for hours, but it looks like we get the same summons, and maybe some of the same destinations. I'm curious to see whats *new*.

GameTrailer's footage of the show floor demo (see my latest news post) looks really slick, so I agree with the sentiment that it was just the huge projection that made the graphics look mediocre.

I noticed a lot of nice touches in the demo (I'll do a full breakdown in a day or two), like attacking a second target if the original target dies (a common complaint in the GBA games), each djinni having a unique sprite in the battle menus, stylus-touch or d-pad for overworld movement, and some new puzzle elements (burning wick, tree climbing).

I loved the change in graphics. Don't get me wrong 2D > this any day every day, but change is cool. I liked it. However, I do NOT like how they were uncreative with changing thw character designs from the original heroes of Golden Sun. I mean come on, at least make there hair styles and faces different with similar looks that lets you know whos is who. But this jsut screams Mia, Garet, and Isaac when it really isn't even them. >_>;

I was almost disappointed with ragnarok though as Matthew only summoned it he didn't control it like Isaac did in the original with his sword and Odyssey with Felix. I know I'm being picky but that was the reason it was my favourite move in the previous games. I think they recycled the old djinn as fever was going to be used by Tyrell in the gameplay demo. Hope they shove in at least 10 for each element and new summons would be sweet as. I haven't seen any djinn effects yet but if they put Geode in it would be sweet because that had the best effect.

Also - I find it very interesting, that Camelot will give us a choice how to control the character. If you want, you can cast psyenergy by stylus (which seems a lot easier, since you don't have to stand exactly next to the object), but you can also do it, using traditional controls. And that's great - I was really worried that they'll force us to use touch screen (just like Nintendo did in, for example, DS Zeldas). Thumbs up, Camelot!! :)

That was my biggest worry.

I can't get the Gametrailers videos to work for whatever reason, but I found a youtube video for the demo and it definitely kicks ass.

ALSO the better DS sound makes the score sound AMAZING!

It looks great. My experiences with FFIII on the DS made me worry that it wouldn't be too easy on eyes but they've really worked on it. I can't say too much about the sound as I couldn't really hear much apart from the music heard in the conference trailer but it definitely has that Golden Sun feel to it. I'm so glad we've finally got this game. Last year's announcement was great, but the game feels real now and I'm so excited for it. I also liked when Reggie talked about the fans of the series, I appreciate that.

Let's hope that attacking psynergy will have a lot more use mid- and late-game this time. At least Camelot fixed the "defend when your target is dead" thing.

Would be awesome if they used every djinn from both games but I dont think they will. If they can't they should use the best djinn from both games, like Geode, Serrac and Flash I think.

I noticed there were criticals in the second demo I think but didn't see any special effects, hope they fix that because that was the whole reason for getting new weapons.

lulz. That's one way to look at it. Can't say I'm not curious myself though.

As for the saved data, I imagine some of it (like whether you helped Fhezi or not, etc.) might show up in the form of their offspring/etc. helping out the new heroes.

Though I really, REALLY want them to do something with the floating city of Anemos (or whatever it was), and have something related to the Anemos Sanctum (specifically regarding whether you got all the djinn and defeated Dullahan).

That city was probably one of my biggest curiosities from TLA.

Negative, she's a wind adept. In the artwork her staff has gusts of wind decorating the head. In one of the videos she calls down thunder on an enemy, which is a wind adept-oriented psynergy.

In the first one, her hair is more of a turquoise than green, her staff isn't wind-themed, and seems she seems to be summoning snow. I'm not sure what Wind Adept clothing is supposed to look like, since Ivan, Sheba and Hamma all wore vastly different outfits, but hers doesn't resemble any of them.

Basically she looked more like Mia than the other characters.

I've been thinking, perhaps this fourth guy we've seen isn't actually the fourth member of the team. What I mean is, maybe he'll be playable for a while and then leave the party before we get our Mercury adept. Because honestly, that dude looks like a grown-up Isaac to me. We've been waiting for this game for years, I think we deserve a better plot than Alex coming back for revenge.

I wouldn't mind him being the game's Dullahan -A really hard bonus boss with a lengthy sidequest- but unless they can come up with a really good story, he shouldn't be the main antagonist.

I think it's just natural to think of Alex as the main cause of those problems. I don't think that's poor. It's just natural that the puppet master from the previous titles would come back. Especially, since we haven't got an occasion to beat him yet. :) And I definetely wouldn't hope for such advanced side-quests in GS:DD.

If Alex returns, he's undoubtedly going to be trying to get the rest of the Golden Sun's power from Isaac/Matthew. However he goes about doing it, we already know what his motive is.

While I would definitely like to see his story resolved, there's so much more Camelot could do with a new villain. Maybe someone from Anemos, the Venus civillization, or one of the new countries that formed during the timeskip.

If there is a function for the old games, it'll be extra Easter eggs and minor additions, nothing substantial. Camelot and Nintendo both know that this is a DS game first, and not every DS owner will have backward compatibility or indeed even knows about the series.

I doubt there would even be an extra scene in the game, perhaps special items at best.

I would certainly hope that there are extensive side quests in GS:DD. Those were quite possibly my favorite part of GS:TLA. It was such an awesome feeling getting through a difficult puzzle, leveling my party enough to beat that hard boss, and getting the amazing summon.

Dullahan wasn't hard enough? The Doom Dragon was hard in and of itself. Heck, the Star Magician gave me a hard time too (at first). And both Air's Rock and Aqua Rock were a pain in the ass to get through.

TLA was plenty hard. Though the first game could've been harder.

I actually found mine two days ago and when I started a new game something funny happened. Felixs started at level 72, the level he was on my main game. Sheba, Jenna and Piers have ridiculously high levels too.

Anywho, GS:DD gives me a good reason to get a DS, only which one to get. I suppose the newest model makes the most sense to get, the DSi XL. Too bad it doesn't have GBA support though, but I guess I can still use my GBA for that.

Hell Yeah troubles me even on my 10th playthrough but I got a system now. My guys have to level 13 before trying. Pretty sick system took me ages to think of.

@Saturos S. You started the game in easy mode. Thats why your guys are the same level that you finished the game with. Don't know why Camelot put that in there no real purpose.

At first I was like "lol u srs?", but then I hought about it and it's actually kinda true. I mean, I don't remember ever really having much trouble with Briggs, but he is harder than he seems, for whatever reason.

It would be sick if Isaac was like some kind of God in this game and he would join your party for select times to completely rape any enemies or use crazy as psynergy.

That's ALL he had. That single buff alone does not out weigh the bad amount of HP and Stat gains he obtained, on top of that the damage he put out with his Psynergy really wasn't that good.

I always assumed the power of the Golden Sun would've granted Isaac immortality or some form of longevity, since that is one of the key notions associated with alchemy. It's even mentioned in the first game. That could explain his appearance (if he really is the dude in the trench coat).

They better have made Psynergy damage variable this time around. That was the only downside to the first two games. There should be a stat like strength that determines how effective Psynergy is.

Oh, that's right, because he's FRIKKIN RETARDED.

Though now we know that Goma range got somewhat flattened, the path to Bilibin was destroyed (though some "woodmen built a new path, and Bilibin is still anal about who travels around their parts), and "Lord McCoy" is no longer a lord, as he stepped down from his position. Also, "the continent is expanding" (probably referring to the continent Vale is located on, though I'm sure others are expanding as well).

Vale seems quite different (obviously because Vale was destroyed in TLA), which means that they actually did go ahead and rebuild. Though as it seems to be a fairly cliffy area, the main question would be exactly where they decided to rebuild.

[EDIT] I think some old lady refers to the protagonist's parents as the warriors of Vale who unleashed the Golden Sun (also, some guy specifically mentions Isaac being you're father, "you're" obviously meaning Mathew's), which means it's probably safe to say that Karis is the daughter of one of the eight (or two of the eight? =O), along with the obvious fact that Matthew is Isaac's son (but who's the mother?) and Tyrell (horrible name imo) is Garret's son (but again, who's the mother?).

Though the description did say you'd be playing as the previous protagonist's descendants, it wasn't clear what their relationship was (could've been grandparents if they got busy real quick), and it didn't clearly state who of the three were the descendants.

[EDIT 2] Didn't catch this earlier, but it seems as though the djinni are each uniquely different in appearance this time around (the original starters still look the same though). That's kind of a nice plus.


As for any new djinn being introduced, I highly doubt that as it was pretty much set in stone that there were 18 "elemental protectors" for each of the four elemental stars, totaling 72 djinn altogether. I doubt they'll add more to that, unless they introduce some scholar in the game who manages to make new djinni (since I think it's safe to assume the elders who locked the stars away created the djinn in the first place, it should be possible).

30 years...the charachters were what, 17 maybe 18 according to the game manual if I remember correctly. So conceivably the new protagonists might have been born when the old characters were in their 20s...but now that I do the math that doesn't seem to add up unless the new characters are in their 20s or something. I have a feeling Weyward hasn't heard of birth control so I bet it didn't take terribly long...I smell a 'shipping discussion lulz

I this vid, posted in the other topic, the djinns names are names of old djinn. Flint and Steel we both know and love from GS1 and GS:TLA. Same goes for the other djinns that you could see, Gust, Waft, Fever and Torch.

So I guess you can find your "old" djinn back instead of a bunch of new ones.

I decided to browse the GSR forums for a little while. They've got a whole topic dedicated to that. :P

Though on that topic, I think that since Karis apparently knows Jupiter based healing psynergies (nothing of the sort appeared in the first two games), I think it could be safe to assume that maybe Ivan and Mia paired up. Though that's just speculation. You could probably use the same reasoning to say that Sheba and Piers got together.

Or maybe something else entirely. Who knows.

I kinda hope they change the order that you get the djinn cause after starting GS2 so many times I got bored of the same djinn. I noticed in the demo there were not any non-damage djinn like forge or breeze. Maybe because they are boring and don't do damage Camelot didn't put them in the demo but will be in the game.

I don't think they will put in all the djinn in the game, it's not gonna be that long as it would make it freakn massive if they did. I think 10 each max.

Personally I don't really like the look of the new Vale. The buildings look wierd. The insides look amazing though.

Moving right past the obvious "That's what she said" joke, I honestly would enjoy the game more if it was unbelievably long. I honestly hope it has more playtime in the storyline itself (which means without side quests) than TLA had in its entirety (including side quests).

Obviously, I'd rather they do a good quality job than just tack stuff on to give it more playtime, but I do hope that it is significantly longer than TLA. Possibly even longer than FFIII DS, which I found to be very, very long.

I'm glad to see the menus and battle data streamlined across both screens. Those gameplay demos really show how much more can be done with the two screens, albeit it seems limited to battles only.

It's also curious to note how the Golden Sun has rejuvenated the world (now expanding instead of shrinking as we found out in the last games). How the residents of Weyard are affected is going to be interesting to see, I wonder how much 'new' land will be created to explore, and whether we still will be traveling by a Lemurian ship as in TLA.

Was that village in the demo a rebuilt Vale or another town that Matthew and the others are in?

Unless you guys are talking about an instance in-battle, in which case then maybe we have some kind of "natural" dual-class adepts, which would be an interesting departure from the first games.

In the official art that was released last year, I'd say Tyrell looks older. But in the more recent art (specifically the characters by themselves), I think Tyrell actually looks younger.

Also, the people in the town mention it being called Vale somewhere. I think it was in the last house in the demo. Either way, the town's theme music is the same music used for Vale in the first game, so I think it's safe to say that it's a rebuilt Vale.

GameStop tends to pull release dates out of their ass like Amazon, but November 6 actually sounds convincing. I'm sure Nintendo would want to get the game out by Black Friday, and... Well, that isn't a long distance from the 6th.

Also, here's to hoping the game will continue the trend of including maps along with the instruction manual. I swear that my copy of the first game didn't come with one, but I still have my map from The Lost Age (Albeit with folded tape on the corners from where I tried using it as a poster as a child, and with a few tears from where I tried removing said tape), and it looks great... That might be true but the GameStop near me has been consistent at all times for pre order dates on games. When I pre ordered dissidia like 6-7 months before it came out they hit the release date right on the dot. Same with many other titles I pre ordered. In fact I dont know one title they got wrong on a date. When was the last time a game was released on a Saturday? In the whole 3+ years I've worked there I don't remember a single one. Course it could be released on Sunday like Nintendo usually does but Saturday is unrealistic. I don't think it's Matthew at all. Why would they first create a whole new character (apperantly) and then later decide to make it a Isaac- lookalike again? If anything, I believe this brown haired kid might be the Felix of this game, and Matthew being the Isaac.

@Statistic yes there were two earth adepts in TLA, but there was two of every kind of adept because the two parties merged.

There is a screenshot of blue trench coat guy in battle with you, in a cave no less, so it's obvious he follows you on some kind of adventure, though it could be temporary. If trench coat guy is Isaac, I can think of two problems with that. A) He's too powerful to have a good balance in battle. Think the sequence in FFVII where Sephiroth was in "Cloud's" party to go to the Nibelheim Mako Reactor. If you don't know what I'm talking about, Sephiroth raped everything without "Cloud" having to do anything. I don't know, maybe it would work for a tutorial sequence, albeit an extremely easy one. B) Again I ask, as a father why would Isaac take orders from Mattew?

Like I said, the only reason to think it's Isaac is because it's a blond dude, but the hairstyle is pretty different from what I can make out from low-res DS screens. Isaac had a triadic color scheme of red, blue, and yellow, while this guy seems to have a dual color scheme of a lot of blue with a tiny bit of yellow on his head. Maybe Isaac changed his style when he got older, which would be reasonable to allow Matthew to take his style that we're familiar with. The color scheme screams water adept more anything else, to me.

It's silly to debate on it from having so little to work with. I certainly think it's a possibility, but I don't think you should get your hopes up either is all I'm trying to say.

Yes those were from last year. It got me thinking that this guy might perhaps be the son of Felix. That could perhaps mean that you can control 2 teams of adepts, much like TLA when Isaac's team joins you.

I do think it's Isaac though in those screens. Who else could it be otherwise? I think this is just some fan-service from Camelot. Afterall, the fact that this game is being made is pure fan service. It was wanted badly. Also, it's only been 30 years later. I think it's logical at least some old Adepts are involved somehow in the story.

But wouldn't that screw up the whole djinn system. I mean it was annoying in TLA before I got Piers trying to have djinn effectively set. If that is the case though i am pretty disappointed in Camelot not having the imagination to make another character unless this is some gameplay feature they did on purpose. K skidz. It will be the 72 from the last games. There must be some kind of bank for the djinn or in the end you get 8 party members because I don't see how 18 djinn on one guy is going to work. I'm not gonna doubt Camelot any more though. So long as the djinn are not like pokemon and you find them ridiculously easy and quickly it will be freakn huge! Seems like we will be exploring the whole weyard so yeah Toasty should be real interesting.

Hope there is another extra dungeon and boss like dullahan if we get all 72. New summons are a must. Get rid of gay ones like that one near the end that just heals your party.

K Mat. It won't be. They aren't going to include hold over save data from a 7 year old game. A large amount of people that play this will be entirely new to the GS series. Shit, some of the people that are going to play it weren't even born when the original came out. I'll put 50$ on us getting new Djinn.

If you weren't retarded, you found out a way to transfer your djinn over to TLA. Without a password/transfer data, the game effectively had like, 68 djinn or something.

Camelot are better than that and i dont think the game will be centred around Matthew so they wont only have him on the cover. [Not the creations of the vortex's but the cause of why the Golden Sun failed and didn't work like it should have]

yup, it was the Mayor and he said something about Felix being the one to do it. I'll look up the games script and find what was said word for word. But this is going to be interesting, I get the feeling Felix is going to be a big plot point

Edit: It was the Healer who said it and he said: "Felix must unlock the power", but he got this information off of the Wise One. So that then brings me to think, what is it the Wise One knows? Why Felix? And what this is all going to lead to in GS3.

That leads me to believe that Felix will have a part in this 3rd installment. Not as a playable character, but I feel Felix, even in GS1&2 was always pretty important. I'm sure they wouldn't have the Healer inform them that Felix MUST be the one to do it if there wasn't going to be anything said about it, I mean, it was confirmed that this is the prologue to the real main plot. that Dark Dawn is going to present to us. I'm almost certain something will be mentioned, but again, this is my opinion, I could be wrong. X3
