So I'm going to a few stores, New Era, Bape, huge Virgin Records store; a few of the places I hit up last time, but I need a few more stores to go to as we wont be sight seeing as much. Just any store, clothing, novelty shit, anything. I'm sure GL will be the only one to respond to this, but nontheless, if people have suggestions shoot.

Also, I want to find a stuffed pedo-bear, and I assume New York would be my best bet... GL, any help?

The Queens mall and the two-story J&R in downtown by City Hall. Also (and I kid you not about this), go to the Toys R Us in Times Square. It has a ferris wheel - a fucking ferris wheel - inside the store. It's huge.

Worth going to the Nintendo World Store off 6th ave to satisfy the nerd within.

If you're willing to go about 1 1/2 hours up from NYC into upstate, there's this huuuuge outlet near my uncle's house called Woodbury Common Outlets. Link

went to the nintendo store last time; it's two floors of nerdy goodness. there was a big pokemon focus last time, iirc.

and gl, you wouldn't happen to know some record (vinyl) stores in new york. I'm looking for hip hop vinyl, and New York being the mecca of all things rap, I'd assume there'd be places I could find some rap records. We're leaving tomorrow, but I might be able to hop on my friend's blackberry while we're there, so if you think of anything before Monday let me know.

Check out Other Music located on 15 East 4th street (map) which has a pretty decent selection of vinyls and CDs. That's the one I'm most familiar with, and generally that area should have some decent stuff for you.

EDIT: Apparently there's a place called Ear Wax recommended by a friend I asked. It's located in Brooklyn on Bedford Ave and don't let the name fool you, it's apparently got a good range of stuff and is pretty trendy.

Just got back from the Tri-State a few hours ago, and this second trip confirmed my slowly forming belief that New York is the greatest place on Earth. You feel so insignificant under the endless stretch of towering buildings, yet can't help feel in awe of their presence, pause. Too bad Queens and Manhatten weren't one; the island could really use some suburban areas.. you always feel like you're downtown in Manhattan.

Anyway, shopping. Went to Nintendo World fairly quickly, and I must not have gone upstairs last time, because I don't remember the memorabilia display at all. They had one of only 30 Golden Zelda SP's in existence, signed by Miyamoto himself. Apparently they could only be bought at Nintendo World.. I assume they sold out fucking quick. They also had a GB that had been in a bombing during the Gulf War, but somehow survived, fully playable. Dude sent it in to Nintendo Power some 10+ years ago. They also had a Famicon, which was cool.. never seen one of those in real life. I kinda nerded out, and bought Yoshi and Link-Kirby plush toys, and the Nintendo chess set.. sue me. Went to three records stores (Other Music being one, which actually had a rap record Fat Beats didn't), and came back with a good 20 vinyl xD. Felt kinda insignificant in the Gucci store too, as the 300$ belt I got was pretty much the cheapest thing in the store. Then just hit up a bunch of other shit I went to last time and a few new places.

Sight seeing wasn't huge; we went to the top of Rockefeller again, and no matter how many times I look over at it, Central Park's size amazes me. Went to the Statue of Liberty, went on a carriage ride with Mel in Central Park, and went to Washington Square Park where me and buddy got ripped off, paying 80$ for what I'd say was two grams. To put it in perspective, two grams here costs 15$, and in the States no more than 25$. Despite how tough I think I am in Kingston, I wasn't about to start a fight with some 45 year old ****** in fucking New York. Half Baked was right though, there's always weed to be found there, and sometimes it ain't even weed. Along with the two grams we got another half gram of stems, and about 7-10 seeds, which I haven't seen in my weed in fucking years.

And obviously the reason we went - Kevin Smith's (of Clerks, Jay And Silent Bob Strike Back, and Zak And Miri fame) 40'th birthday Q&A - was my moment of the year. In such Kevin Smith fashion, he spent the first 3 hours and 20 minutes of the first question, cleverly weaving every major life point in the past 2 years into the answer, leaving the final 3 and a half hours for quick back and forth Q&A's with the audience. http://www.youtube.c...h?v=Gy_cLJ19HMg watch the 3 parts about prince.. I guarantee you'll be laughing your ass off.

Anyway, whole trip was great, came back with a lot of cool shit. Only other shitty part was waiting a good 45 minutes in traffic because some dumb ass decided to die on a Jersey highway. They do shit a lot differently Jersey/New York.. they block the accident off a half mile to a mile up so you can't see shit, and they airlift dead people out, and clean the entire mess of the highway before anybody can continue. In Canada we at least open one lane up so the whole thing isn't at a total dead stop.

              tl:dr i <3 ny

edit - duty free is the shit, two 40oz's of Wiser's (whisky)for 25$, which would normally cost 'bout 80$ around here.

and when did the virgin megastore close gl? it actually had hardcore cd's.

That's odd. Duty free is almost always expensive (if only for the fact that those shops effectively run in their own economy).

Yeah but the clue is in the name Toasty, in that they're 'duty free'. As in, free from duties, y'know? Duty free goods have the market power to influence their prices because they'll have such higher demand than those with duties-inclusive. That means they can still charge relatively high whilst still being cheaper than the standard goods.

and 25$ for two 40's isn't anywhere near charging high.

You forget that I live in America where we don't have ridiculous taxes like you silly british/european people.

I can buy stuff without sales tax in Oregon (effectively duty free), the state directly below me. Good stuff over there.

Well yes you do, I went to America for 3 weeks and everything is marked as for example "$4.95 + tax", which just makes it awkward when you're trying to pay with change. Why not just include VAT and call it even?

My point was that our sales tax tends to be lower than the sales tax (or equivalence) in other countries. And in some states, there isn't sales tax at all. Though other taxes are raised as a result.

And honestly, I'd rather have a complex system that makes it possible to reduce the amount of taxes you pay, than a system with a single, high tax that you can't get out of (VAT).

And then there's Britain's piss-poor national insurance. Cheap and easy, but horrible none the less.

Sorry Toasty, I didn't realise you had experienced the UK national insurance system. Pretty sure that pays for my free healthcare. Enjoy your insurance premiums.

17.5% (going up to 20% soon though) really isn't that much, and our exchange rate and inflation rate means that we win regardless because we're paying less even with VAT added. Rather have a streamlined system that costs slightly more rather than having to suffer the small annoyances and inconveniences of unaccounted for sales tax.

Oh I forgot, taxes are just bad because governments can steal our money and TAKE AWAY OUR LIBERTY AND FREEDOM because they're soviets and socialists amirite Toasty?
