It has been awhile since our last update, so let me fill you in on the status of GSW development. As has been a reoccuring theme, AveneR and I have both been completely tied up in long-term school projects, so development has been almost non-existant. We hope to have another server test in March, regardless of if we make any more progress.

So to tide you over until the next server test, we have decided to hold a map making contest. Last summer AveneR made a map editor for the two of us to use to easily create the maps for GSW. So we figured we would give everyone the Map Editor, let you play around with it, and then hold a contest to see who can make the best town map. The prize for the best map has not been decided upon, but you will recieve recognition in the credits if we decide to use your map in the final version.

The map editor can be downloaded at: http://gsw.goldensun-syndicate.net/downloa..._Map_Editor.zip
Its use should be pretty self-explanatory, so we have included a minimal README file to help you out. Note:

TO SAVE YOUR MAP, COPY AND PASTE THE OUTPUT IN THE "CONSOLE" INTO A TEXT FILE USING NOTEPAD (or a similar text editor) AND SAVE IT WITH A .XML EXTENSION.

We have provided you with a sample map, test.xml, which you can open to see how the editor works. Please post any questions in the GSW Help forum. The date for map submission will be announced in the near future. Good luck, and have fun with the editor.

I'm sort of a vet, but I never really joined the forums. Well, I registered an account so I could tell you all what the editor really needs: A DELETE OPTION!

Seriously, I couldn't remove just one object. I had to start over if I made one single mistake. (I had two inns, and you only really need one inn, so I wanted to replace it with some other building.) The arrow buttons became an annoyance as well. I had to take my mouse off the button and back onto it just to keep scrolling over.

            Terrible editor, man.

Sorry, Nick pointed out that I forgot to mention. Use the 1 key on your numpad to delete objects, and use the 7 key on your numpad to open/close the console.

I just downloaded it and it is fun. Easy to make map, but hard to make good map. Controls are fine.

Garet33, make sure that "NumLock" is enabled on your keyboard. Otherwise the computer doesn't recognize that you even pressed that button.

You can create a topic in the general discussion forum if you would like to show people or submit your map. I would suggest asking for opinions and then revise/improve it until the final deadline.

Just a quick question, um does the editor need a certain resolution to work properly? I'm on 800 x 600 and the editor gets cut off a bit. How do I fix it?

It doesn't have the appropriate tiles to make proper cliffs. No top, no sideways, only 1 diagonal (needs 4), and so on. Any way to fix that?

Yes, I'm sorry that there are some shortcomings with the editor and lack of certain parts of the tileset, but this editor was never really meant to be used by the public. We thought we would give you all a chance to play around with it because we don't have time to work on GSW right now. However, since you all seem to be complaining, we may just cut this whole competition and think twice before releasing another alpha version of any part of GSW to the public.

I thought a majority of you would be able to use the editor fine, but apparently that is not the case. So, I'll have a talk with AveneR, and we'll do work on the editor before we ever make it public again. If anyone still genuinely wants to participate in the contest, please post here and let it be known or else I'll just pull that link and we'll wait a week or two before another server test.

That's because our game is totally art-based instead of tile-based like the original.

Max and I talked about releasing the Map Editor before and we weren't really enthusiastic about it. Well, that's not entirely true, see, we really wanted to get the "community" involved, but I had some doubts about making the Map Editor publically available. That was some time ago. Now, last week, Max and I discussed it again and decided it would be a nice "gift" to you guys because you have to wait so long before the GSW is done.

I see we were too eager to release this, for it's really not meant to be used by other people.

                                      Take care

I have a small screen, so my resolution can't handle a box that tall. Can you make it 2/3 as tall with a scroll bar? I just can't save with it how it is....

it is a real pain in the ass to create the paths.. because you have to click on the little square everytime you want a small piece of path. isn't it possible that you only have to click once, and makes as many pieces as you want?

Koleo, as has been stated in this topic, we know about the issue, but there is nothing that you can do to fix it except raise your screen resolution. If you cannot get it to work, then we ask that you simply delete the file and do not worry about the contest, because there is nothing we can do to fix it at this point.

yay. Just decided to check up on GSW. I saw the map creator.

Downloaded, started map, now, is there anyway I can fix the grass so my terrain matches in with the other grass?

Anyways, I've figured out how to make half a map(if not 1/3 of a map) even though the tops and bottoms of my screen are cut off. I'll post my half map when I get it done, its coming along well.

If you delete them and save again they go, but it's annoying having to delete heaps of objects again >_<.
