There's an entire walkthrough on the Golden Sun Syndicate main page. It should help you out.

After you defeat Agatio and Karst, go back to Contigo and go to the house on the furthest north of Contigo. You should meet Isaac and his co. and some woman (forgot the name...) and Isaac and co. joins your party.

everyone gets experience, but I haven't checked whether the characters who don't fight get less less experience. as for the star magician... your first priority is to kill the guardian ball, and any other guardian balls he summons later. when he doesn't have any guardian balls, kill the recovery balls. after that, it's a whole lot nicer fighting him. just ignore the red and purple balls and concentrate on the magician himself. actually, the more purple/red balls he has around him, the better, as that means he can't summon any more guardian/recovery balls. be a little careful of the red balls though, the self-destruct, causing a bit of damage, and giving the magician another space to summon a guardian ball. I think that about covers it. other than that, just use a good, standard strategy that works for you in any battle. more info can be found on the GSS boss guide
