Has anyone else played the civilization games? Basically you make your own empire, starting at the beginning of the Stone Age and working your way through time to the modern day. It's a surprisingly addictive game. Anybody else play it?

I played civilization, and I liked it, but I don't own a copy of it. Its a really good series, and I want to try civilization 4.

Well I bought Civilization 4 on Saturday and I didn't think much of it compared to the previous games. The graphics are brilliant but it's very tough.

I only really played the 3rd one, and it addicted me for bout 3 months so it's quite good (I'm normally finished with a game after 1 month)

3 is the only one I never played. Is it good or not?
2 was my favourite. It was simple but fun at the same time.

I remember the 2nd one. I had great memories from it. I remember I took over half the world and the Carthaginians took another half, and it was world war 3. So many lives were lost. :(

If you do then you should play one of the earlier ones first. The series gets more complicated as it goes along so you might want to start when it's easier. That's what I did anyway.

Its the opposite for me. I played the very first one on snes, and it was really confusing.

On Snes? I thought it was PC only. Are you sure you're not thinking of something else?
Maybe you're thinking of Simcity. That was on Snes.

Me111, how would you compare Civilization to Age of Empires/Mythology? My mom suggested to try it if AoE was out of stock because it looked similar.

Yep, I had it for my snes emulator, and it had horrible graphics.

I can't compare them cause I've never played Age of Empires. Maybe I'll try it in the future.

I think that Age of Empire and Empire Earth are mostly alike. In some areas, they are.

Uber-bump. I borrowed Civ IV from a friend recently. It's FUN! Contrary to what Me111 said I found it easy to grasp and fun to get into. But maybe that's because I'm playing on a "Huge" map with "Settler" difficulty?

I haven't touched it in quite a few months. I like it, but I still prefer II. It was simple but a lot of fun as well.

The only one I've played is 3, and I never could really get into it...I would always get demolished by some other empire an hour into the game...

I remember my old strategy if it looked like I was going to be conquered. Keep building cities over and over again! As long as I had one left I wasn't beaten!
I wasn't that good at it when I was younger.

I'd either run out of money and run my citizens morale into the ground, or finish the game with my highest tech thing being an iron-clad steamship. I was pretty horrible. I might try it again sometime...

I always found that partway through 2 I'd run into some problems with the Government and everyone would start a revolution against me. If I changed the Government then I'd run into tax problems. It was pretty annoying.

But I have to give a new verdict on Civilization IV, now that I have something that will play it properly and not screw up on me. It's brilliant and more addictive than cocaine. It wouldn't surprise me if they'd lightly dusted some on the disk...
I'd agree with Wind Dude. It's easy enough to get into and I might even say that it's more fun than II. I'm glad they've announced a fifth one now, and I may get the expansion packs to keep myself going.

If its for the consoles, then I'm not as concerned. I'm only interest in the PC versions, such as this next expansion.

                                                            Civilization IV: Beyond The Sword

Which should be out by the end of this month.

They'll somehow force motion sensitivity onto it in ways other than a cursor, but I'm not going to judge yet until I actually see it for myself. Who knows, could actually be good.

-Addition of "minor nations," whatever that means

-Gold is "a major component of the expanded diplomatic options - particularly with minor city-states" which could mean anything.

A screenshot shows an artillery unit targeting some enemy infantry. A box is displayed on the bottom of the screen showing some stats, such as the fact that the artillery has a 45% Flanking bonus and the infantry has a Terrain Modifier of 25%. The box displays a rating of the outcome of the battle, rating this one as a Major Victory should the player decide to engage. Maybe this means the annoyingly random outcomes of the battles of Civ IV are gone?

It looks like it's fixing some of my main annoyances from IV, and they're promising some changes to the diplomacy system (though they haven't given any concrete information on what is changed.) Diplomacy in IV was crucial in the early stages, but the problem was exactly that. Diplomacy in the early stages basically cemented whom liked whom and whom was at war with whom.

Plus, they're giving extensive support to the modding community, allowing you to browse mods in-game which is amazing. I haven't even dabbled with mods for IV, but I might do so in V.

But hey, honestly I don't see how you could get too much higher of a rank without cheating or being a tactical genius considering the amount of time you need to put into developing the culture of 3 towns to legendary....
