Not quite sure what you're talking about. But if you want your own server, I think you would have to have some special OS..

No no no. A PWS turns your computer into a small server. I just need it for testing a few things.

Because if I can get a hold of this, it will be easier to use.

What version and mirror do you suggest to use with that?

The newest version. And which mirror you chose doesn't really matter that much, but you can take that mirror that is nearest where you live.

If you are using Windows, I would highly recommend XAMPP (just google it). It is a high quality distribution, and has worked excellently for me. I use it to test PHP scripts on my main development machine, though I also run a separate private linux server (LAMP with Debian Sarge) which I run all my tests on after the code is mostly written.

So does this XAMPP turn your PC into a server like a PWS?

XAMPP and easyPHP are both packages. Containing apache(web server), PHP, mySQL and phpmyadmin. easyPHP and XAMPP installs these services. This saves you the trouble of installing these seperatly. Which is not recommended for someone who at least doesn't have medicore knowledge of the computer.

As to what to choose, XAMPP or easyPHP I don't know. I havn't really tried XAMPP but I have heard it is supposed to be better then easyPHP. Altough I can't remember the reason. But easyPHP works fine by me, since I just use it for a personal testing place. :]

So basically, XAMPP or easyPHP has something like a PWS that allows you to run html documents and such as if it were on the net, and all the other stuff to support it?
[EDIT] Oh yeah, I have fairly extensive knowledge on scripting, like XHTML, Javascript, CSS, and a little bit of PHP and DHTML, but servers of the other hand.......

I assume by PWS you mean the old server service that was bundled with Windows 98, and which is now called IIS. IIS is Microsoft's version of Apache, and so you would have to install a database and PHP separately to emulate a real server.

Instead, if you use a package such as XAMPP, it installs Apache, MySQL, PHP, Perl, etc. so that you have a fully functioning server on your computer. So yes, XAMPP is PWS and a whole lot more.

I too, would suggest XAMPP. If you want something a little more lightweight (Like no Perl, etc, etc), try WAMP, which is what I used for a couple years.

I would not go with IIS unless you're doing ASP(.NET) or need a MS Database.

Yes. XAMPP works on Windows 98, NT, 2000, ME, and XP (both Home and Pro).

Oh good. That's a relief. I went around on the web researching the PWS, and it said that it didn't work on home edition so.......
