Apparently, Blu-rays keep data near the surface, making them easier to be corrupted. Now, I don't know if this is right, and I can't find the site I read it on, but I think its true. This certainly has potential as well, except for the fact you need to buy a new uber expensive DVD player to read them. But prices go down with time. I think you can fit like 3 movies on a Blu-ray, as opposed to one. Lets hope marketing doesn't screw this one up as well.

Sony and Toshiba are pushing this to be the next-generation format. However, personally, HD-DVD is the better option. While it holds less data (some 15 to 20 gigabytes each side), it's considerably cheaper to produce, as it is based on the current DVD technology. Furthermore, HD DVD players are backward compatible with all DVDs, while that may not be the case in Blu-Ray players.
I will move this to the Technology forum, as Blu-Ray and HD DVD technology will be more widespread.

Also, you have to see that the jump from DVD to Blu-Ray isn't as dramatic as the jump from video tapes to DVDs.
Video tapes are clunky, large, and hold considerably less information. The DVD was revolutionary because it introduced a sleeker, thinner model, could hold gigabytes of more information, and even had menu screens where you could select options, jump to scenes, all that good stuff you know and use.
What do Blu-Ray discs do that isn't different? You basically have a DVD with all the same functions, except with improved graphics and more content.
