I hardly know much about it, but if anyone else knows, share your knowledge! Will it be worth buying? Will it be better than DVD's? Or will it end up like the UMD's? Discus!

You stoles this idea from me...I was just to lazy to make a thread. Very good, young padawan.

Apparently, Blu-rays keep data near the surface, making them easier to be corrupted. Now, I don't know if this is right, and I can't find the site I read it on, but I think its true. This certainly has potential as well, except for the fact you need to buy a new uber expensive DVD player to read them. But prices go down with time. I think you can fit like 3 movies on a Blu-ray, as opposed to one. Lets hope marketing doesn't screw this one up as well.

It's only real, calcuable advantage over standard DVDs is raw capacity. Except for uber mega-films like LOrd of the Rings, the advantage isn't enough to justify the cost. If they can make it affordable, they might have something.

Blu-Ray is read with a laser of a much narrower wavelength (violet) as opposed to the red used for traditional DVDs. As a result, considerably more data can be stored on Blu-Ray discs. Currently, it is expected that each side of a Blu-Ray could hold 25 to 30+ gigabytes of data, and possibly more in the future.

Sony and Toshiba are pushing this to be the next-generation format. However, personally, HD-DVD is the better option. While it holds less data (some 15 to 20 gigabytes each side), it's considerably cheaper to produce, as it is based on the current DVD technology. Furthermore, HD DVD players are backward compatible with all DVDs, while that may not be the case in Blu-Ray players.

I will move this to the Technology forum, as Blu-Ray and HD DVD technology will be more widespread.

It's better than dvd and hd-dvd, but probably won't be successful because people as a whole aren't ready for another update. DVDs only started to completely dominate the market in the last few years.

I think that new technology like this will be more accepted in a few years. By then, DVD's will become as common as Video Tapes were, and people will be more likely to move to a better format.

Exactly what I was thinking. Blu-Ray players will be coming out soon (If they aren't already out, i'm not to sure), and from what i've seen from G4 is that you should stick to DVD's until Blu-Ray's become popular, because right now they are expensive and pretty much a waste of time.

@Toasty: It's not going to end up like the UMDs, those things can only hold about 1.8 gig.

And can only be played in a PSP.

Also, you have to see that the jump from DVD to Blu-Ray isn't as dramatic as the jump from video tapes to DVDs.

Video tapes are clunky, large, and hold considerably less information. The DVD was revolutionary because it introduced a sleeker, thinner model, could hold gigabytes of more information, and even had menu screens where you could select options, jump to scenes, all that good stuff you know and use.

What do Blu-Ray discs do that isn't different? You basically have a DVD with all the same functions, except with improved graphics and more content.

Yeah. This isn't a radical change in theory or practice. All they did was change the color of the light to boost capacity and processing speed. There's nothing earth-shattering about it.

Well, there is a significant update in the fact that there probably won't be anymore two disc sets. Everything can be put on one disc, which is really helpful!

The only problem is that they cost a lot of money, other than that SoT is right that they are very helpful. Especially if they have RW ones.

SoT, that's only good for movies like LotR, and TV shows on DVD's. But putting more TV shows on one disc is bad for rental buisnesses like Blockbuster and Netflix.

Actually, Blu-ray was intended primarily, (keyword primarily, meaning most important but there's other uses) for HD content, a single layer Blu-ray disc can hold approximately 4.5hrs, which is approximately a LoTR DVD including extra features.
