Well, I don't know if all of you know, but those of you from North America should know that this week, Katie Couric became the first female to anchor an evening news show in the U.S. She is now the anchor of CBS Evening News, and this is pretty big news if you think about it.

So, are you with or against the shaking up of evening news. Would you rather see a man deliver the news, like Brian Williams, or see a female. Does it matter to you?

I think that if the anchor is professional enough, it makes no difference about the gender. What about you?

You've never had a female news anchor in the evening? We have a ton of them over here. The men deliver the sport news, and the women deliver the standard news.

It's only a big deal in the States because the network television stations have a history of having credible, knowledgable men running their evening news. This is a big change, but I'm not saying Katie Couric isn't credible or knowledgable.

Does this only apply to the evenings, or have there been other female anchors before?

Right now I'm talking about the 5:30 news on the network television stations, CBS, NBC, and ABC. These are the highest-rated news programs in the country, and there has never been a female anchor on any of these shows.

Katie Couric was formerly a member of the Today Show, a morning show on NBC that featured news and fun features, weather, and traffic.

I guess I'm the same as Split. There are quite a few woman news presenters over here. I guess it's a bigger thing over there though, if she is the first.
It's never bothered me who presents the news, as long as you can still receive it.

I watched her first broadcast last night, and even though it was clear she was nervous, she was also very professional and direct with the news. I'm sure that among news-women, she is probably the best one for the job.

I don't see why its that big a deal...There are tons of female anchors in the morning, so now she just doesn't have to get up so early. And sure, maybe net a few thousand more viewers than in the morning, but so? I don't think its that inportant...

Wow, so this is the first time America had a prime time female news anchor? The Anchorman came true!

No big deal to me though. Same as Spilt.

Ahh, it was a big news story a couple of days ago, but it seems to have gone with the wind. Katie Couric is here to stay, though, CBS got great ratings for their Tuesday and Wednesday news programs.

What the hell? It's seriously taken the US this long? Over here we've had women news anchors for years.

                        No offence, but... damn.

Is it an accomplishment to have a woman report the news? If they want to be treated equally, then I see no cause to celebrate. Also, I blame the lack of women on the evening news on their own incompetence.

You might run into some trouble with that comment.

Woman havent hosted the news, because woman really havent tried to do it. If they asked Im sure a network would love to say they had the first woman anchor, making history.

America has also never had a female president. I know that's different, but positions of power have really never been held by women in the States.

The Evening News Anchors on NBC, CBS, and ABC are the most revered news anchors in America. Having this position being filled by a women is significant, even if it doesn't seem like it to other countries.

Still doesn't seem that significant. Over here, I'm guessing that the biggest news show is the BBC News. And we've had women news anchors on there for years and years. Seriously, I'm just thinking "Oh, America's always harping on about progress and how they're the best and shiz, yet they'll all going "WOW" and spazzing out because a woman has become a news anchor?"
