Do I need to complete Crossbone Island before going forward in the Venus Lighthouse?

Here's where I'm having the problem - the walkthrough says:

"Head through it and step on the small purple switch in the next room to change
around the sand waterfalls. <Done> Continue counterclockwise around this room until
you get to the next door going south. <it's a north facing door, but ok> This will get you back to a room you
were in earlier. Here you'll want to head down the ladder and up the ladder to
the north of it. Head across the sand waterfall and go through the door. <Houston, we have a problem...
Even when start at the top left corner of the 'sandfall' (i.e. right by the middle north door) and trying to walk up and across (i.e. holding ^> ) I can't make it all the way across without falling. Am I missing something?

nevermind - hold down 'B' to run... how I got this far without knowing that, i'll never know! lol ;)
