He does have a point. It's unlikely that anyone who isn't from here would even now about it.
Still if you're determined to do it, then I'd go for a comic. They're always fun, even if they're rarely successful.

If you really want to make a game website, you need to aim to be the best website of that type. if you can't do that, try something different, but most importantly make the site what you want it to be. Keeping interest in the website is the most important thing.
beyond that, here are some things to consider...
- updates. Most people will visit your site several times before even considering visiting the forums. If the site appears dead on the front page, people are going to assume the forums are dead too. Nobody wants to support a site that isn't being supported by the webmaster.
- content. if it's a fansite, try to have the most in depth info on the game you can. If your site is bigger and better than the other sites on the same game, people will be more tempted to linger on your site over the others.
- design. Maybe not everyone is as shallow as I am, but I'm one of those people that will be attracted to the site more if it looks awesome. But remember, content > layout, and clean navigation is always important.
- community. If you have lots of features for your regulars, you're more likely to get regulars in the first place. Also offering things that other sites don't have is a bonus.
- downloads. People love websites that have alot of offical art, music, etc etc etc available for download. Keep in mind though that this eats up bandwidth like crazy, and you need somewhere to put it all... ($$$)
And finally, Website comes before forum. Always. The moment people give up working on their site and just bum around the forums with their regulars is the moment their site starts to decline. People will always leave, but will people always be joining if you're not providing recent content for them?
