Some great sites are Mininova (which I use) and Torrentspy (also very large).

I personally use Azureus (http://azureus.sourceforge.net), which is written in Java and thus works on all the major operating systems. It isn't quite as lean as uTorrent, but it is one of the most feature-rich clients available. uTorrent just was bought by BitTorrent and will become the official client, so that goes to show its credentials.

Torrents are good to get full albums and depending on how many people are seeding it goes much faster. As Agatio said Mininova is great, It's what I use and also most Torrent programs have a search bar, well at least BitTorrent does.

Learn how to read seed - leach ratios. The more people downloading than people seeding, means that the connection is split up between all of you downloading. Also, if there is few seeds (1-2) even if there is 0 or 1 leacher, your connection is most likely going to be slow.

... Now thats just not nice. Leave both upload and download uncapped; your using the system for free, let others benefit from the same thing you are. Alot of people complain about leachers (leachers in the sence they don't seed after finishing a file) and private trackers even keep track of your status, and will ban you from the network if you don't have a 1:1 seed to leach ratio. (in other words, 1gb downloaded, 1gb uploaded)
The head of Black Kitty has a 680gb upload to 146mb download, last time I checked. They can share the wealth, so can you.
