I noticed today I am about 40 posts short what I was yesterday, I confirmed this was not only me by looking at SoT's who yesterday was at something like 5110.

Yes, it does. Yesterday morning, at about 7:30am EST, I had the forum recalculate everyone's post count. Over time, as posts or topics get deleted or move to different forums, the forum software doesn't always properly keep track of one's true post count.
So every so often I have it completely recalculate the number, resulting in most people's post counts dropping a bit. Since it's been so long since I last ran a recalculation, for some people the drop was actually pretty significant. But your new number reflects your actual post count.

I remember you saying before that this sometimes happens... But I lost about 120 posts, that's a lot, damnit!

It should in this forum.
If you're talking about when posting in the Common Room or the Intro/Leaving forums, posts there do not count to your post count as stated in the forum description.
That's why when you post there your post doesn't increase.

I think I only lost a few, if any. I don't pay attention to those kinds of things, so I didn't notice.
