Signatures

Seriously, lately I've started getting annoyed at the sheer size of some signatures. I mean putting an image is fine, but some of you fanboys have images, lyrics and other random **** all in one signature. I know there are some rules for the size of signatures and crap, but either the moderators need to enforce this more or we need to make the rules more strict. Half of the crap I scroll through is useless signatures, keep them short and sweet you Mario-lovers.

Disabling Images
I go to quite a few forums that allow signatures but only text. There are MODs in place that only let you enter X lines of text so people can't add too much junk. Generally there's enough space to put your favourite quotes, website URLs, poetry or anything else you'd like to say which nobody cares about. Not only will this help solve the problem, but it will actually save the website a lot of bandwidth which is always a nice bonus is it not?
Disabling Signatures All-Together
I imagine when most of you read that heading you will say "WTF OMG NOES!" but I have seen a lot of communities (including mine in fact) where we made the decision to remove signatures all together and it actually grows on people after a week. I think Mr. T hangs out on my forum so he will know what I'm talking about but the point is that people should focus more on the content of your post rather than the huge images below it.
There are more pros to this path in the form of the forum looking much more tidy and organised when topics aren't cluttered by any signatures but simply posts. If you want to express your graphics skills etc. you can always use your Avatar, that can stay obviously.

Half of the forums I hang out at either have signatures completely disabled or just allow a few lines of text so you can advertise your site or whatever you want to do. It has several advantages and only one disadvantage; some people will whine and then eventually get used to it. This is not a graphics community, everybody here does not have 1337 Photoshop skillz, we do not needsignatures.

Mines 500 x 100, but I don't see why the width should matter that much as long as it doesn't stretch the page.
Or I'd be perfectly happy to go with Anubis' idea of disabling images in sigs. I think a couple of lines of text, as he said, is just a nice way to show links to people or just sign off a post with a funny quote, but images aren't really necessary. Photoshop work can go in art topics, thats what they're for.
@GD13: Actually, a LOT of very big forums disable sigs/images in sigs, so you're "devoid of life" theory doesn't really work.

I think signatures are a great way to express your personality through arts. Sure, we don't need to have them, but why would we get rid of them because one member got sick of seeing them? Just because a precious handful of members had twenty line signatures and 600x300 images, doesn't mean we should get rid of them for everyone else.

Even though your post is completely pointless, off-topic and extremely sad, I have to admit you are the first person in GSSF to actually make me laugh out loud in the past four months. To actually be narrow-minded and delusional enough to assume that a member number of all things is what has kept me alive on this forum makes you the official biggest imbecile in the GSSF community's history.
Mark this day in your calendars children, it's not the release of a new Mario game, it's the day 'Nyktos' became the first Nintendo fanboy to lose his mind during the announcement of the new Super Smash Bros. Brawl website. Also this would not be an Anubis response without me telling you to go **** yourself. :]
Attention fanboys; topic moving back to the signature issue.
I suggest Max removes signatures for a few weeks just as a trial and see how the community feels. If you brats still don't like it then by all means you can have your giant wallpapers back in your signatures, but it won't kill the Mario franchise if you post without signatures for a couple of weeks, yes? You will not know until you try. ;D

Much agreed.
I do admit my signature is big, I'll get to changing it today. But the fact that just cause Nemphtis said we should make sigs smaller, and you guys all jump on the bandwagon and scream, "YEAH! Lets make sigs shorter! We never had a problem with it before, but Nemphtis suggested it, so it must be good!"
Just cause he's 19, lives at home, and owns a 360, doesn't make him God.. Agatio on the other hand, IS god..

I've never had people on my bandwagon, and I never do. I also never said that I'm sick of you fanboys, in fact I take great pleasure in making your lives miserable so thank you for seeming to be irritated, as it tells me I'm doing my job well. Firstly, it's my suggestion, I'm not ordering Max to do anything, but as it's my opinion I have a right to push my opinion across as long as I've got a point which in fact I do. So instead of trying to take this away from the main matter and put the spotlight on me (I appreciate the attention but no thanks for now) why don't you take both your fingers out of your flacid asshole and give me some good points as to why we shouldn't try this. So take your band, and your wagon, and put there where your fingers currently reside.
Yours sincerely, the one-man bandwagon.

I was dying for someone to ask me that since I started this topic, you get a cookie for having a brain. The reason is very simple - because I don't have to. This isn't because I'm Anubis, but because as long as we are given no limits on things like this we will always keep pushing more and more across the line. That's why some of the idiots on this forum can post with huge signatures without feeling ashamed, because there's nobody stopping them.
So as I suggested we need to do something about the signatures, remove them completely, enforce the rules more with the moderators who seem to be half-dead (are you people even active anymore?) or simply make more limits for them. Either way, something needs to be done not because I said so, but because something needs to be done. Also, because I said so.

Without signatures, the forum would be devoid of personality. Not all personality of course, but a certain kind of personality. Members here take pride in not only showing off their photoshopping skills, but also in rating others abilities. Taking away signatures takes that away, a 100x100 avatar is not an accurate representation of one's abilities. Some members need to make their's smaller, but that doesn't mean we should get rid of them altogether.

I used to think like that until I realised how shallow it is to assume that without signatures my posts don't mean anything. When people don't have signatures, they want to find a new way to stand out, 9/10 times they have no choice but to stand out with their words and not their graphics. When I post on GSSF, I'm not looking for a ****ing graphics specialist, I'm looking for intelligent, amusing and interesting people from around the world that I can talk to about video games not Photoshop graphics. There are thousands of graphics forums out there, if we did come down to the decision of removing signatures you could simply register on a graphics forum to get your fix.

I'm not giving any names because my opinion on each and every one of you changes every day, I'm a very mood-based person and that's how it will always be.
Also, if you take anything I say seriously then you must be insane, 90% of my posts are just abuse, only 10% of my posts are serious and I'm only ever serious if someone goes against my will or the matter is worth being serious over. I'm taking this off topic now, I want to resolve this signature issue as soon as possible, as I want to get back to playing Final Fantasy XI.

Just make a rule that the total width and height of images in the sig cannot be greater than x and y, and there can only be 3 lines of text or something like that. problem solved.
All we need then is mods and admins that will enforce the rule (there's the hard part).

Yes, signatures are too large and it's gotten to the point that I'm somewhat sick of them. See, I haven't even had a sig for a few days. No, I'm not saying that it's necessarily a good idea to take them away all together, but a sig that goes past the "member no." in your sidebar (when your post only has one line of text) is too big in my opinion. Neon's idea is about right, or what PS said about a pixel height limit.

The sigs should just be made smaller and the rules enforced more if its such a big deal to some people. I don't see any point in making limits and restrictions when its really not that complicated of an issue. (IMO)

The 5 line rule isn't being enforced, at all.
Here's the way I see it to keep signatures trim but still fun:
- Work horizontally instead of vertically if you want a lot of stuff in your sig
- If you use userbars, make one that flashes between bars that are "you". See DiddyKong's signature and you'll know what I mean
- Don't put a list of music you've been listening to. No one really needs to see it; if you like a band, then just make a sig banner or a userbar about them. If you really want to, keep it about 3 songs AT LEAST
- One small banner and a few short lines of text works just fine. No need to make an image for everything
- To try out how long or how good your images are, write one line of whatever text in TRT and post it. If it falls short of your member no. it's good in my book

Last time I checked, you only come in here once every three days to make one or two posts like this one and then you vacate until something new pisses you off. Maybe more people would take you seriously if this actually was a problem.
