I recently cleared my inbox of all messages (both sent and received). Now, at the top of the forum, it says "3 New Messages" - but they aren't there when I click on it...

Mine says "-2 New Messages" atm. Yours probably says "-3 New Messages". Am I right?

Whoa. That's exactly it. And escout just sent me a PM, so the "-3 New Messages" has become "-2 Messages".
Negative messages, interesting... so what do you think the reason could be?

Do you read the 'new message' popup window instead of going directly to the PMs? If you do that, it doesn't count as read. Therefore, when you cleared your inbox, it took your number of read PMs, referred to as x. It then subtracted the total number of PMs, which was 3 more than x. As a result, you ended up with x-3, or negative 3 PMs.
Whether or not you understood that, I don't know how you can fix it.

That makes good sense actually. So basically, if you want your messages to be "counted properly" as read, you have to go to the inbox itself, and not just the pop-up window that appears when you login (also called "My Assistant", which you can click on on the top of the page).

Actually Split, it doesn't matter if you read them in the inbox or not. You'll still end up with a negative number after deleting PM's.
The big problem with this is, is that sometimes the pop-up window that alerts you of new PM's won't pop up. It'll still be considered as an unread PM, but the pop-up window won't acknowledge it, and thus won't alert you of it. It's happened to me several times already.
