Yeah.....it seems Acer is trying to enter the console race. Everyone start hoping and praying that they fail miserably. PLEASE.
Their idea isn't bad, it's just the fact that THEY'RE the ones who're doing it.
Acer may be among the "Top 5 computer retailers in the world," but their laptops suck hard in quality, and Acer desktops might as well be boxes colored with crayon. They're a company based in Taiwan, and they're worse than Dell. I've seen way too many broken "e-Machines," and it's way to easy to tell that their prorducts are made out of cheap plastics and sub par parts. The processors and nvidia/ATI gpu's aren't, but the RAM, HDD's, ethernet controllers, all of them are crap.
Now that my rant is over, what do you all think about having a PC based system that's "open"? (Not whether Acer's system will be buggier than MS's or not, because it will)

And why would we want them to fail? You can never have too many games...

Infact, it's starting to sound like a computer that's just been repackaged so that they can charge extra for it.

I'm curious to see what they're going to use for a CPU and a GPU, and whether they'll use cheap plastic cases or not.:P

Acer's quality is sub-par by far. I wouldn't buy a computer from them if I was held at gunpoint. And I wouldn't let anyone I know buy one without them at least knowing how crappy they are.
If you've seen the desktops, then you know what I mean about quality. They may look cool, but it's way too obvious how crappy the quality is.
If they can't even bother to make the case out of durable material, why would they use anything other than the cheapest somponents?

Gateway used to be as good as IBM, but they dropped their quality to compete with Dell. I've seen some of Gateway desktops from around 2003/4ish, and the cases loook so cheap, they might as well have been made in Taiwan.
I'm just dissapointed, because companies like Dell or Acer have pretty much forced the companies with good quality systems, to use 2nd rate parts instead.

If the companies you listed had good products, customers would have spent the extra money to buy their products. Apple and Sony CEs are usually priced higher than the competition yet they sell more. I think if Gateway or IMB had great computers as you said, they would have performed well regardless.
Well, actually, probably they did. Just don't blame Dell for their misstep ^^.

I take perfectly good care of my products. Dell has, and likely still does use cheap knockoff or at least lower quality parts when making their computers. If you compared a Dell Lattitude laptop to a Lenovo, the Lenovo would win hands down in quality.
And eugine, only a few people seem to really care about quality these days. They just want something that's cheap. Just because something is of high quality, doesn't mean people will buy it. THAT is why those companies either dropped their quality, or are no longer a leader in the PC production buisness. They couldn't compete with Dell/Acer's prices.
And Apple's sell because of their design. They're better quality computers, yes, but most of the time, they're easier for the average person to use. They don't have all of the problems that PC's have. Sony's computers aren't as high in quality as IBM's were. They're just overpriced. I'd rather get a Sony than a Dell though.
I'll admit, Dell isn't as bad as it used to be, but I've had numerous problems with my Dell that were unrelated to the way I treated it. It's from 2001 by the way, which is why I said that they've gotten better, but their computers still fail in comparison in quality, and even in the cost to power ratio, to a custom PC made of quality parts. I might buy a Dell some day, but I will never buy an Acer.
And WD, it IS a good idea. I never said it wasn't. I'm just not happy that Acer is the one to do it, because they'll likely screw it up.

I'm lazy. Do you find a problem with using google? Split obviously doesn't.
Anyway, I am greatly relieved to say that Acer is NOT making a console, and that it was a misunderstanding. Phew! *wipes sweat off brow*
My absolute hatred for Acer and general dislike for Dell still stand though.
And I was getting my info from PSX Extreme's e-mail newsletter (I only signed up to ne entered in the drawing for the PS3).
So I guess this can be closed now.
