I have always been curious how the dynamics of running vs. walking and wood areas vs. plains areas come into play when navigating the world map. For instance, is it less/more likely to encounter enemies in the woods.

I didn't really notice any difference.
Though I think the random encounters are determined by the amount of time you spend moving. I remember encountering enemies just as often when walking as I did running, so I don't think it's based on a distance system.
Could be wrong though.

Well...I agree with toasty...
But i never really cared, cause i'd always be happy for random encounters( training-wise), I would use avoid, or i would use a sacred feather in the begining of the game...

I don't even know if it counts for forests.
I can't remember bumping into significantly more enemies when running through forests than over plains.

GS seems to be different that way. Most RPG's have it so forests on the map make enemies more encounterable.

I thought forests had a higher chance of bumping into enemies...

That's what I said. GS is different insomuch that it doesn't increase the odds.

But even in GS I got the feeling that there were more in forests. Maybe I was just imagining it, thinking it should.
