Except for a few niche games, FPS are, while being the most mainstream and over-saturated genre on the market, really the only hardcore games left (if by hardcore we mean challenging and having something of a learning curve.)
Game... I mean movie, looks pretty sweet.

seriously though. i don't get what it is about FPSs that make people love them so much. i tried them out, and they didn't seem all that special to me. :/ it's just shooting stuff from a first person perspective instead of a side scroller or top down, or whatnot. what is the big deal?

pretty much agreed. originality also plays a huge part with me though. i don't care how hard it is, if there's 2500 other games just like it, it's lame.

On the topic of the FPS thing though, they do take skill and a learning curve to really be able to understand what's going on.
There is also prediction in an FPS, sorta like there was in that shump, except in FPS you predict the pattern of where the people are going to go/be rather than where bullets are going to go/be.
If you know how someone works and understand what they're going to do next, then the game is in your hands and you will always prevail. That's basically the "learning curve" that Someone Else is talking about happysister. =)
