I can't claim credit for finding this, but Gamestop has a January 1, 2010 ship date listed for GS DS. Granted, it could simply be that they want to start collecting pre-order revenue and so slapped a date up there, as January 1 is a very odd day to launch a product (many stores closed, after Christmas rush, etc.). At least it confirms that this whole affair isn't a practical joke?

Max, from my three years at Gamestop, I can tell you that it isn't a real official date. Theres one of two possibilities. One, It could be just pushed back minimally to a later day the same month, or two, it will be pushed back by a few months. In any case, this is more or less a way for Game Stop to generate reserves, to guarantee future customer support.

When a game is set to the beginning to a month its usually a sign of this. They did it with Wrath of the Lichking and some other games.

Eh, I wouldn't speculate anything just yet other than GameStop wanting the monies. There's no way GameStop and only GameStop would know anything about a release date.

EB (who are owned by gamestop) tend to do it at the end of the month.

Well I'll tend to attack EB and Gamestop employees who dare hold my soon-to-be-pre-ordered copy of GSDS from me. And that's a fact.

Right now there is just a ship date, not a street date, so they won't be holding it from anyone cuz they'll be able to sell it when it comes in.

IIRC retailers need to have some date, any date in the system if they are to take pre-orders.

Not really, all they need is an official product confirmation and maybe permission to use the game artwork in their stores.

It's not like DNF where the game was never officially slated for release.

                    This is true.

I've seen a couple DNF pre-order slips on the interwebs.

I don't remember Gehstappo taking reserves for it, either that or I didn't care.

I think from a retailer's perspective, it's a smart idea to put down a date. Makes people feel like it's gonna be there sooner, and people are more likely to preorder.

And the more people that are likely to pre-order the more business that is more or less guaranteed at the store.

Hopefully when Nintendo is thrown off it's high horse they'll start making good titles.

I'd like to see just how far they go before they end up blowing all their money on some bizarre controller design that even the casuals won't want to touch.
