To get out of the first fucking cave took 20 minutes. Not because it's big, but because about 8 rats all had to take their turns after mine. After that, the only think I could do was go to Vault 15 or something and I got a random encounter with 3 radscorpions that 1HKO'd me.

tl;dr I suck

Put some skill points into outdoorsman or make new character with Luck higher than 3 next time, and don't go directly to Vault 15 yet.

I was thinking the same thing until I found some doods to follow me and decent equipment, then it gets good. It is an old game though so not everybody will like it.

It's not that I suck; luck was 5, strength was 6, agility and perception were both 9 and I put skills into small guns, doctor and medicine meaning my small guns was about 70 straight off.

There's nowhere else to go other than vault 15 anyway. Either vault 13 or 15. And I'm not going to bother giving it another shot because of how fucking slow it kicked off. Turn based MOVEMENT in dungeons FTL.

Found the water chip with something like 20 days left. I'd had a good lead on where to get it for a while, but I got side-tracked soo that's how it happened. I also found a water merchant who I could have hired to send water to Vault 13, adding 100 days to find the water chip, buuut that cost money and also ran the risk of painting a trail to the Vault for Raiders so I thought best not to take any chances.

Game isn't over yet though.

Dogmeat, Ian, and had Tandi follow me around for a while but she refused to use anything but a knife even when I reverse pickpocketed a magnum + ammo so I thought eh, she's dead weight. Dropped her off at Shady Sands.

So it's just me, Ian, and Dogmeat now. I gave Ian a Power Fist so that's pretty awesome.

I know you can get more dudes but I don't know where or who, and I'm trying not to use guides.

His tendency to shoot friendlies is a little irksome yes. That's why I fitted him with the Power Fist, no friendly fire and it knocks people to the ground. =) Finding ammo for it can be tough though.

lol, yeah, after I posted about Ian's terribleness I realized that the your use of the powerfist was a good remedy. Smart thinking.

I only have 4 Strength. Didn't realize when I created my character that most decent weps take 5 Strength. I've tried to accommodate by Mutating so that I have the One Hander trait, but still.

The only way I know of is at the brotherhood. There's a surgeon that'll up a stat by one for about 2000-3000. There's a few week recovery period, and you can only up each stat once.

Still looking for Tycho. Didn't see any bar at Shady Sands. But I did suggest crop rotation to the farmer there, so that the village has better agriculture. Got me 500 easy EXP, so that was pretty cool. Having high intelligence is actually useful in this game unlike other RPGs.

Umm. He's standing next to someone. About the same level in the bar vertically on the screen as the guy who you can kill for the leather armour at the beginning of the game.

Found him. He was in Junktown, not Shady Sands. He's great, says things more often than Ian. It's kinda funny (but tragic and frustrating) when we're fighting Deathclaws and he get's hit, he says "If you wanna kill me, try hitting my head" and then the Deathclaw slashes him again and he dies. Deathclaws, FUUUU... they're not impossible to beat by any stretch, but I do a lot of saving and loading to get it done just right.


So, something I find a little odd is how the Brotherhood of Steel are portrayed in this game to how they're portrayed in Fallout 3.

The Brotherhood of Steel is portrayed as being a bit rough around the edges, yet benign in Fallout 3. But in this game, while they're not hostile to anybody who doesn't give them trouble, they really don't give a damn. They're simply the keepers of Pre-War knowledge and tech (some post-War), mostly military in nature. They don't offer protection to anyone at all.

I suppose that's why you see Brotherhood Outcasts in Fallout 3, and that's what they mean by "Elder Lyons has abandoned the original mission and values of the Brotherhood." Still, it sort of tampers with the whole moral gray area that Fallout seems to be made of.

Except for a few characters there aren't very many "good guys" in the original Fallout. They aren't about making life easier for other people, they've simply set out for their own self-preservation. It really kinda shows you that Bethesda didn't really stay true to Fallout with Fallout 3. I'm not trying to say that Fallout 3 is bad by any stretch. It just... isn't Fallout.

I made a retarded character (1 intelligence) who is awesome at combat. He has an INSANE amount of action points and sequence. Really good at shooting and hand to hand. He's like a retarded John Woo film.

But it's... it's HARD. Nobody wants to talk to you because all you can do is spout gibberish (wubba! Flurp!) and occasionally some, uh... simple english. (wa-wa! uh huh! nuh uh!) So far I can only get Dogmeat for my party. =(

Already got the water chip with my retarded character, who I have named Bob. Of course, this is entirely because I already knew where it was. Bob doesn't speak English very well so there isn't a lot of information gathering going on with this character. From a roleplaying perspective, you could say I found the water chip out of dumb luck. Ba-dum-pish.

The Super Mutants in Necropolis? I was maybe level 4 or 5 when I was fighting them, equipped with a hunting rifle. Now, on my last character I didn't get to Necropolis until really late, when the Super Mutants were doing a full-on invasion of the place, and they didn't feel like talking and there weren't many ghouls left in the town. But on Bob, I got here much earlier. The Super Mutants weren't quite as aggressive, and all that they were doing was imprisoning the ghouls. The lead Mutant actually didn't attack on sight, he stopped and talked to me. Or tried, anyway. Larry (that was his name) said that I didn't really look like a ghoul. All Bob could think to do was say "Huh?" to which he replied "Huh?" back. This went on for a little while before Bob settled on his next move, which was to say "Mom?"

Well, Larry decided that Bob wasn't a ghoul at that point, and attacked him with his Laser Rifle.

Bob has an Agility of 9, and Endurance of 7, which at level 4 or 5 left us with 49 HP. Basically I'm generally kind of hard to hit, and when I do get hit it typically doesn't do a lot of damage. This time however it did hit me, for 21 HP. 28 HP left. First round of the battle and I'm already at just a little over half of my HP. Niiice. Bob unholsters his Hunting Rifle, moves into a nice position and aims a shot at Larry's right arm in hopes of crippling it, but all I do is 15 HP damage.

This was going on in a water complex, with a few rooms. Bob was in one room. To the east there was a hallway type room with three other mutants. Two started moving over to my room. Bob was between Larry, in my room, and the door to the hallway. When one of the Mutants enters the room, Larry fires an energy shot at Bob but he dodges it, hitting the Mutant behind him at the waist, which cuts him cleanly in two. Dead.

So that leaves me two Super Mutants to kill. Me. Some retarded guy named Bob, who was given this mission of finding a water chip for my Vault likely because they just wanted to get rid of me, tired of taking care of my retarded ass who ran around all day screaming "wubba-wubba!" at people.

The Mutant that's left has a Flamer on him. The Flamer in Fallout 1 is even nastier than the one in Fallout 3, and it can kill in just one turn. This is balanced by that, so far, nobody but Mutants and maybe the Brotherhood has access to it, or it's ammo. So, I decide that the smartest move to make this turn is to distance myself from this Mutant, moving behind Larry so that if this Mutant is smart enough to open fire on me anyway, at least Larry goes down with me.

Bob has an insane amount of action points, so even after moving behind Larry I can still shoot him with my rifle. So, I do. I aim at his Right Arm. This works, as on Flamer Mutant's next turn he decides to RUN AWAY from me. Dogmeat chases him down. He goes down in a few turns.

Larry has more HP than either of the Mutants that have died, so he's still tough. He gets me to near death, but I use Stimpacks if this happens, and Dogmeat all the while is biting at his ankles. He does go down eventually. I snatch the Laser Rifle and the Flamer, use the Flamer on the last Mutant that hadn't attacked, killing him instantly.

The rest, as they say, is stuff that happened in between then and now. I think it's actually possible to get through Fallout 1 with a retarded character, but it takes knowledge of the game beforehand and, of course, lotsa big guns to make up for the lack of companions. The conversation with the Overseer while giving him the water chip was hilarious, I'll say that. Worth it just for that.

Thanks for the tip, also fuck Fallout 1. 160% Science skill and the only difference I noticed was 1. Had an extra conversation topic about chemicals with the scientist in Adrytum and 2. Was able to use it to hack the computer in the Super mutant military base, which was pointless because it was quicker to hack it by just "Using" the computer anyway.

I killed everyone out front (Got Dogmeat died at that time, but it was before I had my T-15b and Turbo laser rifle, so I continued the save considering how difficult the fight was), picked up a disk on one of the super mutants that let me inside.

Also after you hack the door control computer, use your radio on the computer and the radio becomes a switch that turns the yellow doors on and off.

Ah... almost 50 hours into Fallout 2, its very good so far even though I felt overwhelmed by the size half the time. Still have quite a few things left to do, have barely touched New reno (Only went there to upgrade my car) and haven't set foot into Borken hills yet, but I have infiltrated the Navvaro base and am currently working on completing San Fransico at the moment.

Only problem I have so far is that I spent the majority of the game looking for decent armour and an energy weapon, and the moment I get free (Best armour in the game) Enclave armour and a plasma rifle loads of armour and weapons start flooding me, and all I can do is give then to my silly companions (Gordo of course cant even use anything), I must admit though giving Vic a Gauss rifle has actually made him a competent team mate.

Looking forward to finishing the game, think I heard somewhere you can continue after you complete it.

Level 18 I think, also if you have a Pariah dog in your party KILL IT. KILL IT WITH FIRE.
