Sherlock Holmes

Though I was a bit skeptical at first, upon watching it, I came to the realization that it was like the perfect mix of action, adventure, humor, and deduction.
I laughed a few times. I also want to know what kind of martial art Watson and Holmes were using.

This was a refreshing change for the better, in my opinion.

Maybe you're taking his quote out of context? Perhaps the way he said he wanted Avatar to be bigger and better than Star Wars wasn't an ego stroke? Perhaps the image in his head seemed so great to him that something could 'finally be better than SW!' or something along those lines. Your whole basis of why avatar is bad is because an unoriginal plot (a problem with every story since the 1800s..) and that he thinks he's better than George Lucas. I think you should go see the movie with an open mind and find out what you think of the movie.

To start off, he got his idea before Starwars came out in the first place. He said he was kicking himself over it because he had "a similar idea" that he felt could've made it big too.
His whole reason for getting into the film industry in the first place, was to upstage Lucas. He's said it himself (albeit in different words) many times before.
He may have originally wanted to make Avatar because he thought it was a good idea, but over time, I think it's become quite clear that his goals have become selfish and conceded.
Not to mention his idea has been overused to DEATH more than a thousand times already.
Seriously. If Hollywood was a first person shooter, that idea would've gotten the "glutton for headshots" medal a long time ago.

And there's a problem with being ambitious?
There's no point reasoning with shallow minded people such as yourself. Enjoy watching technologically inferior and boring films.

If you think Avatar deserves film of the year just for looking good, then yeah, I'd say you do.
But then again, you're taking a film class, so of COURSE you would have good taste in movies! I mean, you're actually STUDYING them! Why didn't I think of that before?

Get back to me when you've seen Guillermo Del Toro's entire collection and we'll continue this discussion about what films are good or not because you're clearly deluded.
I'd say something about you claiming avatar to be bad without seeing it, but you dont seem to understand the concept of 'balanced view' so I'll just leave it.

I really enjoyed Sherlock Holmes, for once it wasn't overhyped and while it made some concessions to appeal to such a wide audience, it was still really fun and funny while I'm told it kept trueish to the novels.

There's a difference between not noticing hype and something not having hype. Sherlock Holmes has had LOADS over here, if only for the Jude Law and Robert Downey Jr. factor. Dont know if its different in Aus.
And as for your first point, I'm just trying to prove Toasty wrong.

Not only are you judging my entire taste in movies on the fact that I enjoyed ONE recent film, a film that you have NOT seen and therefore cannot form a balanced judgement on, but you're also assuming I was ever debating which films are good or not in the first place.
I dont know if you've noticed, but I'm pretty sure I've not criticised your taste in movies once. The only point I have been trying to make is that you CANNOT form a judgement on a film without even SEEING it in the first place. You have absolutely NOTHING to back up your claims at all; your single point is "the plot is bad so the movie must be terrible. And because somebody enjoyed it, I'm going to judge their entire taste in film based on this one film"
Just look at what you're saying Toasty.

I really enjoy Modern Warfare 2, for once it wasn't an overhyped game and while it made some really dumb changes from the already questionable original game, it is still GotY while I'm told IWNet was a great idea.
it's great how interchangable your posts are :B

I wouldn't say the previews and all that didn't get airtime down here but compared to Avatar or when Terminator 4 came out there wasn't as much. On the hype though I can say that I saw a Zombieland trailer at least 10 times a week at the gym and on TV and I still saw it twice at the movies, probably the funniest movie I've seen since Death at a Funeral, and as well as the hype I created in my mind, it surpassed all of it.

This just goes back to Caael's point. I'm sure there was massive hype around MW2, but considering this is the only gamesite/forum I visit, all the hype for MW2 I experienced was built in my mind, and it didn't disappoint.
I'll bite though, what questionable changes? And I dunno what IWNet is, must be for you PC users.

Just look at what you're saying Toasty.
I think you're misunderstanding me.
Your taste is poor not because you liked Avatar, but because you think it's good enough to be the movie of the year.
It's like saying Halo 3 or GoW 2 ever deserved GotY. It's the same thing.

Toasty, please go and watch Avatar. Then, realise that "movie of the year" only counts for movies I had actually seen in 2009. Which was about 5. If you had seen the other 4 movies not including Avatar, you would agree that it was movie of the year.
I'm just glad your post just now actually some degree of understanding to it.

Why didn't you like it, and would you have preferred it to be just like one of the stories? Watson being nothing really but a secondary character, none of the humor, and Holmes not being broken?
