And I'm not talking about "it's an hour out" or anything, because that's be easily correctable.

I noticed that the forum time is about 18 or so minutes behind the actual time. When I last checked, my entry on the who's online page, just after loading it, read 12:29 PM when it was 12:47 PM

It's either that, or my city is crazy and is 18 minutes ahead of the rest of my time zone. ^_^

You're right. It's also off of the right time here too. And by that same margin. But it's been like that for a long time. I don't even know if it can be fixed.

Actually, you have a point... I remember the day I joined was the day the clock got seriously screwed up. (And flood protection pretty much blocked me from posting because I posted 10 or so hours ahead of the forum time.)

The function that is responsible for displaying time is driven by PHP's date() function. That grabs the server time and allows you to manipulate it (timezones, format, etc).

Max cannot do anything about it.

Oddly enough, I remember IPB having a function for server time offset. I might be wrong about it though, and if there is one it might only be hour-wise.

The server-time offset is just for timezones, and so works in hours. If it is off by about 15-20 minutes, then it is almost surely IPB's caching functions at work. To lighten the load on the server, IPB generates and stores (caches) the resulting portion of a page for a certain amount of time, and then just serves up the stored version for future requests instead of regenerating it each time.

I don't think it's a big deal really, and it might be because the server's clock is set incorrectly, which I can't fix myself. I'll talk to my host about it though.

So in other words, we're hooped, then. ^_^

Bah... 18 minutes. If it was more like 30 it'd be a problem.

As long as the clock is accurate to the hour, I'm happy. I just want a basic representation of a member's current time.

Forgive the double post, but the forum clock seems to be exactly on time now. Hmm...

Still five minutes behind for me, but that's survivable.

Mine is ten minutes behind...Shouldn't it be the same for everybody? Or did I just misunderstand?

It may also have to do with the fact that the clock dosn't run while you're looking at the page. So if you're reading the page for five minutes, the clock will be five minutes behind.

I explained why you can see up to 20-minute delays in the time in my post above. Basically, to cut down on server usage, IPB "caches" pages so that it only has to generate it once after every page update. So instead of dynamically creating the same page for every single user, it can generate it once and only re-generate it once every x minutes or when the page is updated (new post).
