I just want to give any lurkers a warning that on Wednesday, May 23, I will be deleting all user accounts with less than three posts. Remember that posts inside of "The Lobby" (including the "Common Room" and Introductions forum) do not count towards your post count. So please contribute to threads to boost your post count to three or more, or else you account will be deleted.

The intention of this purge is to remove all the old spam-bot accounts. The new anti-spam defense appear to be working, but bots that registered before they went into effect can still login and post, and I want to stop that.

Ah, yes. The good 'ol 'bots from yesteryear. >_o
It'll be nice to clear all of 'em out once and for all. (at least until their next "generation" of bots)

Max, are you planning on manually implementing bot-killers any time soon?

Spam King, I'm not sure if that is necessary. One problem with doing manual anti-bot measures is that they get lost whenever I upgrade the forum or apply patches, and I will always have to keep redoing them. If the current CAPTCHA system holds its ground, then I don't think it will be necessary.

I also took another anti-bot measure, which was removing the forum software version number from the footer of the page. Many bots search google or other search engines for specific version numbers which they know how to exploit. Since we no longer have the version number posted, hopefully bots will stop being attracted once the search engine indexes are updated.

you could probably remove accounts that have not been active in more than two years as well. that could trim more off

I wouldn't prune old members, only members with fewer than a couple posts. And yes, I would probably recalculate post counts before doing the prune so that deleted topics (such as spam-bot topics) do not count.

Currently 2.2.2, but I'll be patching it on a regular basis. Major interruptions will only occur when major forum upgrades are made.

I do believe we're running on 2.2, though I'm not sure if that's the latest version or not.

Soooo....today's May 25, but I still see profiles with 0 posts. However, some member's post count's have been reduced, so obviously something happened.
So did something go haywire or something?

Yes, something went wrong. I did recount post counts. When I went to prune members though, I got an error with IPB. I didn't have time to deal with it yesterday, so it'll have to wait until after the weekend.

I'm still having issues getting IPB to cooperate. Seeing as how we haven't had many issues with this lately, I am going to wait until I return from my trip to do further research into the problem.
