I expect to be getting a new laptop in July or August, before I go off to college. So, I have a very simple question; should I get Vista, or should I stick with XP? (I understand that there are probably other factors to consider, but I really don't know myself).

Well I'd say it depends. Are you using it strictly for school and work related things, or games, music, etc?

If your using it for only homework and projects then you should get vista. If your using it for media and other entertainment, then i'd say XP, since not all programs are compatible (or still bugged) with vista.

Well, yes, I would like my laptop to be as close to a desktop replacement as possible; not for games (since I don't play computer games), but certainly for my music, video editing, etc. (I also plan on teaching myself to use various Macromedia software, i.e. Dreamweaver, Flash).

On a side note, is Photoshop CS compatible with Vista?

As of right now, I'm not exactly sure if it is compatible, but I would guess that it is.

By now theyve probably patched it because Adobe is a huge franchise that needs to keep its licenses.

You're gonna have to do Vista soon. Its acutally better than you think. Its just bloated with stuff most wont need.

Personally, I would use a GNU+Linux distribution instead of Windows all together (since you don't play games).

Although it would be difficult to learn Adobe Flash on Linux (Flash MX 8 works through WINE) since Flash is not too well supported (although we have flash players and such as well as an open source flash player).

Dreamweaver sucks as far as a drop-and-drop thing goes (99% of all GUI web builders do) and there are other IDE/text-editors which can do everything DW can do so I don't worry about it.

Of course, if you're keen on getting either XP or Vista, I would go with XP for now and upgrade to Vista in the future.

I agree with this (and in fact I recently did so).

Wow, clearly you're very experienced. ;)

I suppose I can't argue with that logic, and may as well stick to XP. Still, is it just as easy to upgrade a laptop? And how much longer should someone wait before upgrading?

Upgrading on a laptop versus a desktop should be a similar process. I can't see recent (generic) hardware being unsupported by Vista any time soon.

As for when you should upgrade - after you do some homework. Figure out which applications you cannot live without (perhaps your favourite browser, text-editor, etc) and then figure out if those applications work flawlessly on Vista. Then, check that your hardware can support the feature you want on Vista (perhaps it's Aero with transparency, perhaps it's just Aero, etc). If you know your applications will work and your hardware will support the features you want out of Vista, then you're ready to switch.

Download the Vista Upgrade Advisor (http://www.microsoft...adeadvisor.mspx - require .NET 1.1 Framework) and see if your hardware is supported and supports the features you want.

Upgrading the laptop is the same process as doing it on a desktop, only complaint I have is the length of time it takes to complete it, but I can't really complain since Vista is so huge.

Vista = shooting myself in the mother freaking brain. I hate it. With every ounce of my soul. If you must, get XP, I highly recommend Mac Books, for anything.
