Wi-fi On Ipod Touch

I'm trying to help out my brother with this, but apparently Apple decided not to leave any serious instructions in the box and I can't seem to find any obvious help on the internet, so I was hoping somebody here has some experience in the matter.
Basically he set up an Airport network on his MacBook (which has been labelled a Computer to Computer network if that means something), and it's visible on his Touch, but when he tries opening Google he gets 'Safari can't find the page because it can't connect to the server.' There's no password on the network, and he's using it right next to his laptop. The YouTube function obviously doesn't work either.
[EDIT] Do you think a wireless modem is necessary?

Is he just transmitting a signal from his computer? Cause yes, you have to have a wireless router / modem to give signal to non-computer Wifi devices..

Yeah, thought so. Ah well, not a big problem for a music-orientated device.

A "computer to computer" network is not internet. It will only allow him to access his PC wirelessly. On windows, it's called an "AD-HOC" network. It allows you to transfer files from computer to computer. First, he needs a wireless acess point (I'm assuming he does because of his laptop) second, he needs to know that point's SSID and either WEP or WPA key. There should be a menu in the iPod that allows you to put this information in.
If his Mac is connected to the internet through his ethernet port (a hardline connection), I think there might be a way to connect the iPod to the internet through the mac, but I only knew how to do that on a windows based laptop at one point. Can't remember anymore. Besides, macs are different. But there should be a way. If not, there's a number of USB wifi thingies that plug into your laptop and send out a wifi signal, but I don't know if they work on macs.

Well, I guess your question was answered already.
BUT! When you do get a wireless network, you must register your iPod and have your iTunes account on it in order to not only download songs but to use the Youtube function.

Well my brother must already have one, because he was already able to use the internet when he connected it with our cousins' wireless modem.

The internet yes, but, the Youtube channel shouldn't work, and downloading songs shouldn't either, unless he registered it when he plugged it into the computer.

YouTube and the iTunes store both work perfectly.
And crap! I've calling it a wireless modem this whole time! I meant router.
