I've already downlo- err, bought, Vagrant Story and Final Fantasy IX, which I am looking forward to playing very much. Any other suggestions? (RPGs & strategy are top of my list)
EDIT: And yes, I have played Final Fantasy VII too a long while ago.

From personal experience I'd also recommend Tekken 3, Theme Hospital, the OddWorld series and a ton of others.

Ape Escape - Catch monkeys with gadgets, Pokemon style.
Time Crisis - Only buy if you can get yourself a G-Con. Controller aiming is painful.
Gran Turismo - Solid racing simulator, great graphics for its time.
Wipeout - Futuristic racer; awesome weapons and incredibly fast gameplay.
Vib Ribbon - Rhythm game which plays your own CDs. Great concept, and addictive.
Final Fantasy, Metal Gear Solid, Resident Evil and Tekken - I've heard good things.
You really can't go wrong with any of the above. As for the console: make sure you get the PSone model, with a DualShock controller.

Forgot about VP and CC. You're right, both amazing games. 1 word of advice for CC, DO accept to help Kid when she gets all sick like. Trust me, it will benefit you.

One question about Chrono Cross - I've played Chrono Trigger for the SNES, how are the two similar/different?

I loved the Spyro and Crash Bandicoot games. Why'd they stop makeing them? D;
And GL, I'd highly suggest just looking on Ebay for an old PSone console. They're dirt cheap. The games shouldn't be too expensive either. Heck, there's probably a program floating around on the net that lets you burn *ahem* ROM's to a CD, so you can play them on the PSone.

No relation to Xenosaga, and it's a frickin' kickass RPG. Superb plot, good side quests, solid characters. Hilarity ensues when you hear the voices, though, they suck. I must say, regardless of that, it's probably the most engaging RPG I've ever played.

I had fun playing TM:Black when I ws at a friend's house. I've always kind of enjoyed the whole battle arena with armed cars thing. There's a game on the PC called Bumper Wars that's fairly old, but it was awesome the first time I played it. I dominated at it. And then, a few years later, I was like "Oh hey, that was a fun game" and so I installed it, and preceeded to get my *** kicked by the CPU's. XD
I guess that's one reason why I thought Full-Auto was prety good when everyone else thought it sucked. =/

Because they were acquired by other companies, who proceeded to rape the series.

Given the nature of PSone discs that's pretty much impossible. You might have better luck with a modchip though; it works for me. :(

That's true, and I do actually have my old PSone tossed around somewhere. For some reason though, lately I've only been feeling like playing games on my computer... really strange, I can't quite say why that's the case. Though, I could definitely burn the ISOs to a disc and just use it in the PSX, so that's an option I'm leaving open.
In the meanwhile, I've secured myself a nice gamepad, and now I have to choose to start with FF VII/IX/Tactics, Vagrant Story, Xenogears, Valkyrie Profile, Chrono Cross... ahh, where to start?!
Thanks for the suggestions everyone.

You're going to be embroiled in wicked RPG madness this summer.
All I know is that Xenogears is close to seventy hours long, or it was for me. You could always start with the shortest ones first. (Metal Gear Solid is pretty short, I believe.) There's always the danger of losing interest in a game and never picking it up again, that's quite the danger with RPGs.
While I'm still on this topic, how do you go about obtaining these games / what are they played on for the PC?

They're printed on special black plastic, and there's also an area code in the tracking pattern at the start of the disc which can't be reproduced by a CD burner. The only reason you can rip games off them is because the computer only reads the data.

My next thoughts drift over to the Resident Evil games for PS1, and then on over to Crash Bandicoot, and then to Tekken....
There's also Bloody Roar, but I can't really think of any others at the moment.

The black plastic was only to detter copying them from disk to computer. But I'm not talking about using just any program to burn them. There's probably a special program out there designed for this kind of thing.
However, I believe the PSone uses an infrared laser instead of just a read one, so that could pose a problem. Hence why I just suggested ebay.
But GL, I'm interested in how much lag you get while playing these games on your computer. I don't get any lag on my old Dell, but that's only with fram skipping on, and the sound disabled in the emulator. Plus, I've only emulated GBA games. (I also own origional copies of said games, just for sake of teh rulez).

You forgot Squares 25 games on the PS1, the Suikoden games, the Breath Of Fire games, the...well you get my point. Your list fails, and is a very bad necro. I believe two of those three games have been mentioned before.
I could be wrong though, so if anybody *looks at Split* goes through the topic and says no they haven't, I will kick your ass.

sorry GSM, you caught me at a bad time, so if i'm a complete asshole, my apologies.

Twisted Metal: Black wasn't on the PS1, though it definetly was the best game of the series, except maybe for Small Brawl.
Oh, and Spyro and Crash did go on. Just imagine all the good Disney movies that got crappy straight-to-dvd sequels.
That is what the new Crash/Spyro games are like.
No more searching for hours to get that last red coin, or to get those two stupid fucking egg theifs in Tree Tops [everybody who played the original will no EXACTLY what I'm talking about], no, now you spend hours trying to set dude on fire, and then lightning him.
It's not Spyro anymore.

I support Legend of Dragoon! That was one awesome RPG. I'm still playing it.
All the other games seems to be said already so I'll just leave my suggestion here.

Sorry, all names escape me, haven't played or even seen this game in years.
Once again, I show my support to the original 3 Spyro & Crash games. They were the best 3D platformers of the time, and I will freely admit that I had more fun playing the original Spyro than I did Mario 64. Getting all the gems is way more interesting that getting every star

Metal Gear Solid.
Crash bandicoot. All of them, so you know whats going on.
Gran Turismo 2. Still my favourite GT.
Need for Speed High Stakes.
Comand and Conquer.
GTA II
Heaps of good titles on the PS1 ey. God bless the man who figured out how to PSPify them too. Now I just need to work out how he did it.
