Some friend of mine was obsessed with it at school so I went and bought it, but I actually bought tla first (because it looked badass and I'm retarded). Then when I got to jupiter lighthouse I went back and played the first one so I could have a save file to put in. But then the code was too long anyways so I just didn't bother.
Anyways, I ended up obessed with it, so I went back to school the next year to rant about it with my friend, but apparently he had changed schools so I was alone with an undying need to talk about it. Sooo I joined gssf :o

I got a GBA myself one Christmas (I'll let you know now I used to be very deprived), and so I bought it. And then a sequel for it came out not long after, so I played that. Don't know what year this was, most likely 2003.
I actually know a bunch of people personally who have played Golden Sun. Despite what people like to say, the game was very popular.

I fell into the same trap. I got GS next Christmas though, so it all worked out.

My story is strikingly similar. Except it happened sometime around '05, or sometime after TLA came out.
Friend had it on his GBA and suggested I try it. I had actually been watching a lot of Ed Edd 'n Eddy lately, so I used "Toast" as my name (yeah, that's where my username came from). Anyway, I played it occaisionally when I went to his house, and then I believe I got an SP that Christmas. Bought the first one used, finished it, bought the second one new, and fnished it sometime later.
And I know of at least three other people besides my friend and I who've played the games. And I got someone else interested in the series back in January/February-ish on a church trip thing (long drive to where we went).

Ooh, but I don't think there was one archer in Golden Sun, or any bows for sale anywhere. Kind of odd.

It all started when I wanted to go to my grandma's house and spend the night, I was around 14. I acted on some strange impulse to clean under the cushions of the couch. I found a purple GBA, generic, I know. It had Golden Sun in it. I didn't even know what a GBA was until now. Anyway I turned it on and as I said before I was hooked.

I don't remember when I got The Lost Age, must have been in Spring or Summer of 2003.
I also had to buy the original two times, because I lost the first one like forever. I don't have any clue where it went, I searched everywhere. D:

it's strange how things become stuck in your brain though. i haven't played the games in about two or three years and i still remember about every little detail about them.

Anyways, my brother let me borrow his GBA and he had a few games. I popped in GS and had no idea what I was doing, but then he let me create a new save game and I started playing it. I'm not sure where I got hooked, I think somewhere around TLA, but I became obsessed.
*fades back into lurking and waits for GS3 news*

Me and my brother got Gameboy Advances and 3 games, 1 for each of us and 1 to share. He got WarioLand, I got GoldenSun. I freaked out, because the short commercial showed Issac using Ragnarok, which I had no idea how that worked at the time of course and I thought that was badass!!! Beat the game by the end of December and started the game over again. This time around, me and my brother found out everything about the game and then started the grind to leveling up. I got to lvl 52 with everyone around March and then lost it on the bus. Needless to say I was fucking pissed.
Saved up some money and got it in May, around my b-day, with my b-day money, and got them up to lvl 50 and took a break.
Once GS:TLA came out, I bought it with the money that I was saving up for the band trip to Branson, Missouri and played the shit out of it. The Band Trip was boring as hell, so it was well worth the buy. That was my Sophmore year.
On the last day of my Junior year, I brought my GBA:SP to school and linked up with people on GS and GS:TLA and proceeded to pwn everyone that came my way with my lvl 30 group on GS and lvl 45 group on GS:TLA. I came home from school and found out that someone stole all of my shit, which was 8 games and my GBA, all racking up to over $300 and a shit ton of hours of gameplay lost down the drain.
Got another GBA:SP with the brighter screen and got the first GS because GameStop didn't have GS:TLA at the time. Basically the short end of the version, it was stolen from me by 1 of 2 people that I was living with at the time.
Finally, after getting another GBA:SP used, I found someone on Ebay selling them for cheap with the actual guides which came up to about $30 for all of it.
I now have played the shit out of both of the games and gotten all of the best gear for them that I know of. Going to look at the lists on the GS:TLA subject forum and start building them up like that and see how much they mess Doom Dragon and Dulahan (SP?) up.
So in total, I lost 4 GS's, 1 GBA:SP, and 1 GS:TLA.
Sorry for the wall of text =D
Edit: Reeeeally sorry for the wall of text, it seems I've killed this subject =(

Anyway, I bought it, and played it non-stop. I got the second one a few months after it came out, for my birthday, and that's pretty much all there is to say.

1. Definitely remember seeing this commercial and thinking "this looks awesome": TLA commercial
2. I started playing when I was in high school. There was this girl in my English class who wrote GS fanfiction and was going on and on about this game and how she was a "mudshipper" so I got curious and picked up a copy of GS. HOOKED. I injured my knee and was invalid for a month in the summer so I got TLA. We've been in love ever since.

Of course, I named my Character Tost. I wanted Toast, but I remember not being able to use 5 characters for some reason at the time otherwise it would've been Toast (in reference to Ed from Ed Edd 'n Eddy being obsessed with buttered toast. This is also the birth of my screen name, and what lead to a nickname used by a select few people irl).
Anyway, I played the game as often as I could, much to the annoyance of my friend who wanted to do other things when I visited. He somewhat regretted introducing me to the game, but oh well. :P
I believe I got a GBA SP that same Christmas, along with a copy of Pokemon Crystal (the first Pokemon game I ever owned, also my personal favorite), and some other game. I want to say AW2, but that's probably wrong. Either way, I eventually got my hands on a copy of GS, and thoroughly enjoyed it. I later went out and bought a new copy of TLA, which I beat, and then lost, and then after buying another used copy, found it again. And then beat it again.
I later lost my copy of the original GS, bought another used copy, and beat it a second time. This time, my friend (who originally introduced me to the game) and I got together so we could use eachother's GBA's to transfer data from our GS1 copies to our copies of TLA. After that, I went and beat TLA again.
Having discovered GSSF sometime amongst all of that, I also became a bit acquainted with the password generator. So I went and gave Isaac and Co. the best stats possible, and set them to level one (along with giving Isaac a Sol Blade for a total of two Sol Blades). I then went on to slaughter Dulahan in the most ridiculous possible way by metaphorically *****-slapping him with regular attacks. He was dead within 5 turns without ever switching party members, iirc.
I think I might still have the save file with those mutant adepts. Dunno.
Anyway, upon hearing actual news of a new GS game a year ago, I went back and replayed GS1. Haven't finished grinding to level 4 something yet though, but I also haven't touched it in months. /:
