    Why the hell is DONKEY kong, called DONKEY kong?

    Isn't he a monkey? Translation error?

      Yes and no. In America, we called stupid people asses, and the Japanese thought we were calling them donkeys. So, Donkey Kong.

                      Also, I think it was a marketing concern. "Monkey Kong" doesn't flow as well as "Donkey Kong".

                        It has to do with the ongs and ungs. Mungkey, Dongkey, Kong, etc.
