I read about this camer in...WIRED? Can't remember. It was a few months ago.
Anyway, this camera is just absolutely amazing. It's the first digital camer ever made that can actually compete with standard 35mm film used in the movie industry.
Previously, digital cameras could either match the framerate, but not the resolution, or vise-versa. This camera can match the the resolution 35mm film offers, as well as the framerate
If I understand correctly, Hollywood tends to use two diferent high-definition resolutions. 2k (2048x1080 and 4k (4096x2160), among a few others.
Aparently the company making it is going to make some kind of modular system. Previously, they were going to make two seperate camera lines. The Scarlet, which is like a slightly improved version of the origional, and the EPIC, which offers everything from 28k video capture (yes, that's 28,672 pixels by 15,120 pixels for super-extreme-holyshi- high definition video) to 261 Megapixel still pictures.
Now, they're just turning those two camera lines into modular parts. Basically, they'll be selling different image sensors that can be easily inserted and removed from one of their cameras.
But seriously. That's some seriously high definition video. That thing can capture more pixels than any TV or monitor on the market today can produce. I'm sure there's some movie theaters that can utilize it though, but that's what the company's aim was in the first place, I believe.

I'm guessing this isn't intended to be used by the general public?

Actually it is. In fact, if you have enough money, you can buy it. No special connections needed or anything.
The movie industry considers them good enough to use though, and so they do.
But if I had enough cash, you can bet I'd buy one of these. They're frikkin' amazing.
