Chemists from the University of Zurich have developed a new fabric that never gets wet, even after being completely submerged in water for two months.

The fabric is constructed of polyester fibers that are covered in a layer of 40-nanometer-wide silicone nanofilaments. These nanofilaments are spiky and cause water to sit in a sphere above the fabric, a permanent pocket of air protected safely below.

              That's pretty insane. Wow.
One of the comments had an interesting idea, if you could put material like this on the hull of a boat, for less drag and greater speed.

How much did it cost to make this material? If it's cost effective it's uses could be endless.

Last time I checked, the surface of a fiberglass or carbon fiber hull was smoother. :P

This would make great upholstery for the seats though.

True, but if water didn't physically "stick" to the hull, then there would be no friction, thus less resistance. Eventually, this leads to better speed/ fuel economy etc etc. Perhaps. The rough surface would probably muck it all up. Plus the crap that'd most likely grow in it like fungus etc would make it totally not worth doing.

Awesome idea though. Beach towels anyone?

The rough surface makes it easier to cath everything else living in the water though, resulting in a desperate need for cleaning more often. If it did make the boat more efficient, my guess is it would only be for competitive boats - I don't know how many people could deal with trying to keep it so clean all the time.

But aren't beach towels supposed to soak up water so you can dry off? Maybe picknick blankets or something.

This would probaly best be used for more mundane things, like laced into clothing or used in umbrellas or something.

This material would also be great for rooftops of homes, to keep the rain from soaking and dripping through wood.

                                  Eff.

But yeah, it'd be great for roofs. Easier to maintain too. Though it'd have to be pretty tough. I mean, it'll be soaking up direct radiation from the sun for almost as long as there's light outside. Plus temperature extremes, and then there's rain, snow, etc.

But come to think of it, if they could make this stuff incredibly tough, it'd be perfect for a transformable boat hull. Kinda like BMW's shape changing car. It could adjust for different speeds/activities (there's a reason for why ski boats aren't as good for tubing as sport boats afterall)
