In america, do you have to go to the school closest to you??

For primary / high school I mean..

Like you have to go to the school for your district? You can't really choose?

My high school was a 1.25 hour commute by metro and bus. It was a specialized school granted under a math/science charter which you could only enter through an exam.

Most students do have a zoned high school (i.e. the school nearest to you within your district) and depending on where you live, it could be binding. Usually, it's the policies of the high schools themselves that say whether a student living outside the zone is allowed to attend. In my unique case, it was open for all the kids in NYC who scored highest on an exam, for example.

Other schools may give preference to zoned kids but allow a select number of outside applications, and there are plenty that just accept anyone within the area.

Well that pretty much answered all the questions I could ever have on it ever..

The Australian system used to be, and still is sort of, like that.. People within the zone are given preference, but people outside can still apply and many will get in.. But there are a LOT of schools in Sydney (where I live) so the amount of students applying at a certain school is always kind of manageable..

We used to have the Zoning thing, though, way way way before I started school..

Glad I could help. Yeah, preference tends to be given on those geographically closest, which makes sense in some ways (easiest to distribute students) but is unfair if some primary/secondary schools are better than others. Some may just end up luckier and able to attend a school with better funding or quality teaching by virtue of where they are zoned.

HERE IN WURSHINGTUN U C'N GET INTA' JUST 'BOUT WUTEVER U DURN WEEYUL WANT.

I know people who live in other towns which have piss poor schools that come to my town instead. No entrance exams or anything.

I'm pretty sure that as long as it's a public school, it doesn't matter. Except maybe in heavily populated areas for obvious reasons.

Unless you go to a private school, you generally just go to the one in your district, however you can choose to go to a public school in a different district if you really want.

              oh, I'm a canada*** btw.
