I've been wanting to purchase one for a while now. Something in the 250-400gb range would do well, and reliability when it comes to securing your files. Form/design doesn't matter, nor does write speed, so long as it's usable.

    Any recommendations?

Build your own. It's really easy. Just buy an external enclosure, by a drive to go with, put the two together, and voila.

      External enclosure:

      Drive:

      Total cost: ~$87

Kinda bulky, but it'll be faster. Especially if you can make use of the eSATA connector.

Though if you want something easier, simpler, and more compact, WD also has a pretty nice portable drive.

$70, it's smaller, and it only requires one USB chord to work (the drive, being a low power laptop drive, doesn't need much power).

It will most definitely be slower, and if you need more storage space, you won't be able to just drop in a new drive.

If you want something simple, small, and portable, the latter drive will work fine. If you want something that's faster, and that you can upgrade later, the first option would probably be best.

And believe me, it's really easy to put together your own. The hardest part is picking out the parts. The hard drive can only fit in one direction anyway, so as long as you can use a screw driver, you're set.
