www.adobe.com is the official site for Photoshop, download the trial.
PSP is the Paint shop pro main site, download a demo, that should get u started.

        Alrighty, thanks...

Which is the better program though? My school uses Photoshop, but some of my friends use both...

Well, Andross has used PSP longer than APS but I'm sure that Adobe products (Illustrator and PS) are industry standard (With Studio Max 3D being 3d rendering standard).

Adobe is better than PSP. PSP may have steps that makes things simpler, but once you delve into Photoshop long enough, you don't end up using both (like me). The brushing advantages and resources are great enough that it surpasses PSP exponentially.

3DSM, as nick said, is an industry standard. C4D is another great program used commonly in commericials, and Maya is best for character modeling. But that's not really the thing we're discussing.

Photoshop is best. Period. That's about it. If you ever have an urge to *get FREEdom, hence the FREE, cough cough, ya know ya know* and don't know how, PM me :)

Eh, it's always good to know both, if you want to be competetive in the industry. The more software you've mastered (or even have a basic level of competency in), the more flexible you are, and the more valuable you are to employers. I'd suggest learning Adobe Photoshop/ImageReady, Adobe Illustrator, Corel Painter, and Maxon Cinema 4D, one at a time, before spreading out or specializing.

Anyhow here are the industry standards, as I see them:

                Raster graphics: Adobe Photoshop
                -Second place: Jasc PaintShop Pro

                Vector graphics: Adobe Illustrator
                -Sp: Corel DRAW

                Digital painting: Corel Painter
                -Sp: Adobe Photoshop

Animation: Adobe ImageReady vs Macromedia Flash

3D Design (polygonal): Discreet 3D Studio Max
Sp: Alias|Wavefront Maya 3D vs NewTek Lightwave vs Maxon Cinema 4D vs Softimage XSI

                3D Design (NURBS): Rhino

Video editing: Various in-house apps (obviously not for sale, in general)
Sp: Adobe Premier vs Pinnacle Studio

Odds 'n Ends (2D and Web design): Macromedia vs Adobe

Odds 'n Ends (3D design): Curious Labs vs Discreet

Also, in addition to what Andross said, I have Adobe Illustrator for those who need it. If you can setup an FTP to your server or something similar.

                    Yes, the trial.

Just saying... FTPs and P2P are a bit risky.
