If your's truely buys a game, I usually play it on-stop for about a week or two, then cease to have any knowedge of it's exestance.

On some special occasions, I pick up the old games, and here's some ways in which it happened:

• Going cold turkey. Ie: Thinking about the game constantly and not playing it. Until ofcourse I have to, or die from withdrawal symptoms.
  
• Reading instruction manuals. Heh. A favourite refresher of mine. You'd be amazed how many time's Ive gotten back into MGS II from reading that stupic comic in the manual.
  
• Holidays. If I cant have it, I want it. Like at christmas time when I went to NZ, I Just WANTED to play FFX-2. I hadn't played it for a month or so, but when I got back, I completed the entire Via infinito (big), and ran through half the game again.

• Game Soundtracks
  Everytime I listen to them, I feel like playing the game. Especially when it's MGS, Zone of Enders or Final Fantasy.
  
  
• Pictures/Artwork/Adverts
  It reminds me of the game and I say to myself "havn't played that for a while" so I do.
  
  
• Mood
  I'm really in the mood for Stealth/Fighting/Puzzle etc. and so I play it.
  
  
• Boredom
  Yup, it gets me too.
  
  
• 0wnage
  The fact that I reguse to buy new games unless I have completed all of the ones I already own.
  
  
• Xbox Live / Online Play
  I may be bored of the singleplayer, but since there's always something fresh when you play against real people you always go back for more.

I don't care much for games anymore. Every holiday I get a sudden game revival, but I still havn't bought myself a new game.
I've been planning on getting ToS every holiday since it was released and still havn't got it :)'

I usually only buy games that are sequals to old favorites now...
MP2 was the only game I got last year O.o

When I've been stuck on a game for months and I can come back to it and complete that part straight away.

I was stuck somewhere on PoP:WW and I just did it with surprising ease today. :)

Something that often get me to start playing a game again is movies.
After watching movies like 'Lord Of The Rings', I always want to play a fantasy themed game.
And after a movie with a lot of futuristic battles, I can end up with StarCraft or Halo.
I think that is the most usual reason for me, picking up a game and starting playing it again.

Books are also one thing that make me start playing certain games again.

Mostly I get a revival when I just see the game and play it for a time. Like Anubis says it has to do with mood to. Now I dont feel like playing games like Paper Mario 2 but Im really in the mood of playing PSO and Soul Calibur. When I am bored and dont have played a game for ages (like Golden Sun XD) I can have a revival to. Or just sometimes when I hear the music I just HAVE to play it... That happens alot with Mario games :)

Me? I normally don't need anything to get myself going again. I just say, "Hey, I haven't played that game in a long time." Next thing I know, it's all I'm playing for the next month or so.

For me, it is when i discover something new.

Like when i saw those moogle plushies on Ebay, i just had to play FF:CC again. Wonderful game.
