I think I have the previous edition "PHP and MySQL Web Development" by Welling and Thompson. That's my preferred book/resource when it comes to PHP/MySQL web development after trying about 4 different books.

They get into PHP5 although this is mainly about PHP4. The bolded title is the exact name of the book.

Sounds good, you shouldn't need PHP5, it isn't being widely supported yet. I can't really rate it though, since I don't even know the book in the first place :)

Well if you download and install PHP5 onto your own server, then learning PHP5 wouldn't be a waste at all. Make way for progress. I can't really rate a book by its index though Nick.

It looks like it covers everything I would need BUT one part you cant judge is how they teach it to you...but u can partially judge it by the order and content of the book

Actually, those chapters could be full of unhelpful information and badly explained examples. So no, you can't judge a book from its index.

But usually to get an idea of what the book is about, especially when in a bookstore, compare indexes of different books and see what each got.

Yeah like all say, I can't rate that book.

The only(almost) difference between PHP 4.3 and 5 is that PHP5 has support to objectorientating.(PEAR)

It is hard to rate your book by just the index, but this series is usual good.

Another big difference between PHP4 and PHP5 is the way PHP passes variables.

PHP4 passes variables by value while PHP5 passes them by reference. PHP5 also provides improved error handling and integration of external object from other sources (like Java).

Anyways, if you want to see what the book is like, check out the "php practice lessons" topic.
