Nintendo's first voyage to WiFi has begun with Mario Kart DS. Finally, we can play each other from anywhere in the world! (though I don't know how many of us have DS's) You can also play multiplayer with 8 people on one game pak! Who else is excited about this game?

The Nintendo magazine gave it 95% and said it could be the best Mario Kart ever. I assume it must be pretty good.

Well they have to hype it up. If they say "Oh by the way its rubbish" then they're out of a job. Then again they said Mario baseball was really bad, though that was mainly cause they didn't know the rules.

The mag over here gave Geist which is a Nintendo title a 5/10. This was probably just to stop the hate mail they get from giving Nintendo titles 8 and 9 out of 10 all the time. For god's sake, they gave Star Fox Assault 8.5! Anyways, back on topic now people, save the NP bashing for later.

(Mario Kart + Mario Kart 64) x Online = Mario Kart DS = Win.

Mario Kart DS is looking to be the best Kart Game ever made, and that's saying a lot. IGN gave it 9.5, Gamestats is getting a 98.7GPMs on it's popularity(out of 100), and Nintendo Power is obviously promoting it, since it's the best DS game so far. Retro remixes make it all the better, along with Missions, improved battle modes, and 8 player single kart(that of which I'll be trying on the 16th), I'd say it's all pretty awesome. I really wanted Battle mode online, but as long as it's online, I'm happy. I can always battle in WLAN at lunch.

FINALLY, a reason to buy a DS. However, it's not worth the 210 dollar investment for me, as good as it sounds.

Good game to start with, this is definitely the best DS game yet by far.

As for other games, Castlevania looks pretty good and Polarium is a lot of fun! But it's not worth 50 bucks that's for sure.

You start it up and just go to WiFi, as long as you are near a wireless hotspot, you can just start playing! Basically the same as XBox Live except wireless.

There are hotspots at those Wireless Internet Cafes. American Starbucks has them, I'm not sure about where you are in Australia. You can also just plug a wireless router to your modem and that'll send out your internet connection to any unit within a given space.

You don't have to find Hotspots to get online. You can also link up to your own wireless router apparently. Interesting.

I'd buy this game just to see how online gaming works with the DS. I personally believe that Animal Crossing DS will provide the most interesting online experience.

It's weird how you relate people to their avies. o.O Anyways, the DS is poorly built, the screen could have been bigger and the buttons could be bigger too.

Yeah, the ergonomics for the DS could have been improved. But when a screen is directly part of the controls it's a little hard to do anything to improve it. The buttons were fine, but sometimes it's hard to reach some parts of the touch screen (like corners where buttons are often placed). If you position your hands to touch the screen easily like in a game such as Metroid your hands might hurt after playing for so many minutes

All right, a question to the current Mario Kart DS users. How are the controls? Are they hard to master like in Mario 64 DS? I hated the controls for that game.

Naturally it'll vary from person to person. If you have big-ish hands like I do it might be a little tough, but it all depends. If you type in Nintendo DS ergonomics into Google, all the reviewers seem to like the ergonomics.

Oh WOW. I forgot to post in this thread after I got it. Then again, I've been forgetting that ONLINE FORUMS EVEN EXIST. No, really, all I need now in life is Mario Kart DS, AIM, and some free time. Well, literally speaking, no, but still. Er, where to start...

Single Player: Awesome

Reasonably spaced unlockables that make it worth playing, a bit too big of gaps between cc's in my opinion in terms of difficulty, but that's to be expected. I like all the remixed courses from Double Dash in the Nitro Cup, like Wario's Stadium and Rainbow Road, which look the same at first in style, but are whole new courses.

Multiplayer WLAN: As Addictive as Halo

Well, maybe not, but you know what? I've tried it once, with a four/five person WLAN match, and it lasted an entire hour and fifteen minutes, without anyone hesitating going another round. The cut off? The bell for our next class rang, and we all had to split up. Seriously, you know what this was though? It wasn't even NORMAL multiplayer, it was single kart. And it was 8 courses in vs, and 4 or so in battle and shine challenge. It convinced one of my classmates that he absolutely had to pick up a copy of the game, and he wouldn't stop talking about how much fun he was having as we played. But, I must hurry, so continuing...

Nintendo WiFi Connection: limited setup, brilliant fun

Limited in difficulty, but also limited in other aspects. Waiting for people to join a game in anything other than Friends and Rival mode seems to take forever. Worldwide is laggy, but it just seems awesome, so you want to give that a try at least once. The points mode is confusing though, but really it's just, if you got second in a one on one, you get one lose point. If you get second in a four player match, you get one lose point and two win points. If you get first in a one on one, you get one win point. If you get first in a four player match, that's three win points. Make sense? Does once you realize what the system is. Sadly, no points based on your time compared to the guy who beat you, and that REALLY gets you when you're literally touching his kart as you go over the finish line. Easy to get onto a wireless signal, but the antenea seems about as limited as wavebird distance, but it's more noticable since more information is being sent back and forth. You can't specify who you want to fight against in friends matches, and it's an automatic cut off after a certain length, so if you want to play against two specific different people at the same time, it's quite hard, and the idea of three people seems near impossible. But, that's just me, because I built up my friends list. You can't make friends on WFC, but that's okay because you later realize that you aren't going to do much in terms of having a good time with them since A. You don't know them, B. You can't communicate, and C. One of you will soon become much better than the other one, and then it won't be fun to play against them at all. So, Nintendo had a good idea there I think. If communication was added, I would encourage being able to make friends with people you meet in random mode, but for now, I don't think that would work. Oh, and you don't notice that 12 courses are missing, because 20 is plenty, and thats 5 full rounds together before repeats, and trust me, you'll want repeats.

Missions: Excellent!!

Yeah, boss battles + Mario Kart + SSBM Missions = Best thing to ever grace a portable game. I just wish there were more...I've almost run through them all.

Time Trial: No clue.

Really, I haven't done Time Trials yet, because there's so much else to do in this game before that!

Total rating: 48/50. The one thing holding it back is communication and Wifi match making, but you know what? We have other ways to get around that, like AIM and only having a few friends on our lists, so really, that's not a very big problem.

Ah, forgot that, because they're so natural. If you're used to using the A button(which was awkward for me at first since its on the far side, I really didn't like that button before this game), you can pick up the game and beat 50cc on your first try. L is item(or X), R is hopping, A to go, B for Backwards/brake, and Y or touch screen is for switching the map. Classic controls, but an excellent feel to them. Just, try having your thumb lay over A and X, with your index finger on the R button, and your other hand on the D-pad and L, you'll get the feel.

Finding Players on Wi-fi is quite annoying / time consuming. But when you start, It's 1337. But I usually get owned. Seriously. People on it are so good at it! Like they've had it for years. It's VERY annoying.

Play single player first. You're not ready for online until you can beat 100cc. I don't mean in first, just, top three. Really, on day one, not beating more than 50cc was fine, and that lasted til thursday, but now, everyone's gotten a hang of it. Heck, I only have one guy on my friends list who can beat me. Know who that is? The guy who beat 50cc through mirror mode before ever playing online. I'm talking the guy who has all the unlockable characters. I'm on 150cc right now, but there is another guy on my friends list who beat me the one time we played(but boy was it a close match), so I don't count him yet.

Yeah, beat single player first, trust me on that. A friend of mine reset his entire memory because he had such a bad record from online since that's all he did, and didn't play single player.

Heh, I was playing the Xbox 360 at the mall when I was buying Mario Kart. The controller is so damn comfortable, not bulky and awkward like the original Xbox.

On the subject of controlling, it's funny how much easier it is to control games on the DS when you're not using the touch screen. XD With the exception of Metroid... using the touch screen to mouse-look like classic PC FPS games is quite cool.

How do I check my records?

I've actually completed a race (1 on 1) and lost by a small margin, but I consider it a fluke for the other player since my mom was on my case about taking out my contacts (don't ask) so I wasn't concentrating as well.

As far as I've studied into it, it's American; well, at least the production team has pronouncable names in the English tongue. And I'd say, this is Retro Studios good (being my term, for example, when they brought Metroid to the three dimensional realm of gaming. And since the Prime series was good, I can relate it to the way the Americans did this RPG in such a style never before conceived).

But that's enough about it. This is a topic for MKDS, not SSS.

It deserves it. Both Gamespot and IGn gave it a 9/10 as well. I think it's clear to everyone that Mario Kart DS rocks.

9.7 from me if it had voice chat with friends, and the ability to make friends with people you played online through a system of one of you petitioning the friendship, and the other accepting it, through an official message system with prewriten lines that Nintendo had set up. That way, you'd be able to really chat with friends, but if you did rivals and found someone you enjoy playing with, you could send them a cruddy little message asking them if they wanted to be friends, and could really chat once you were friends.

If it had a harder and longer 1player mode, with more missions, I would give it a 10/10, but really, for right now, I stick with 9.4

Wifi is ABSOLUTELY FREE. So long as you can get on the internet, you can get Wifi. If you have wireless in your home, you don't need anything more(if the router is compatible), but if not, you need the Wifi adapter from Nintendo.com. Yes, ROB the Robot Buddy from the NES is a playable character, not Rob the robot in Starfox. ROB was a real thing, Rob is just a character that's in Starfox, named after ROB.

So the NES ROB is an unlockable, the VERY LAST, but still an unlockable, and it's free to play Wifi, unlike Xbox Live.

You can also get a USB thingy to plug into your laptop that has been hooked up to the internet to play WiFi, so you don't even need a wireless router. However, you need to buy it from Nintendo and I'm assuming it's a bit of $$$ out of your pocket.

$35, just as much as a game, but it works for all wifi games...supposedly, a lot of upcoming games, considering we're seeing Wifi only a year into the DS's life. It was pretty sweet when they announced at E3 2004 that we'd have DS before the end of the year, and it was pretty sweet when they announced at E3 2005 that we'd have online before the end of the year. Ninty seems to like getting things going. I wouldn't be surprised if Revo arrived sooner than the end of 2006, maybe in August like Gamecube.

The DS actually will probably have a really long lifespan because the handheld market in Nintendo has no future plans for any new GB's, so DS will get a lot of attention in the next few years.

Like Blink said, nay. Different Rob... I personally think he's a cruddy character, myself though. He doesn't have the stats that I like.

Who's your favorite character + Kart? I like Dry Bones in the Banisher. Good Acceleraction, great Handling, medium Weight, gets good Items. The only thing it really needs is better drifting, and it's not that bad at doing that, even.

BTW what does the Speed stat even do? The Banisher doesn't have a very good Speed stat, but it still goes very fast. I assume that it's because it has alot of Acceleration, but I thought that Acceleration is what makes your Kart build up speed quickly?

Speed is top speed. In a long stretch, Bowser's kart will go faster than Toad's, and eventually win him the race.

What drives me nuts is that everyone thinks the lightweights are "fast". Sure, they get started fast, but their actually pretty slow on the straightways. Dry Bones has the weakest top speed rating, but his acceleration is top notch.

So long as a kart has good handling, I can do fine with it. I can't stand not being able to turn without hopping with bowser and crew though.

Power slide's good. I try to power slide as much as possible, but alot of the times I spend too long in drifting to try to get the boost...

By the way, I notice that weight also helps you to bump the other racers around. That's why I don't like really lightweight karts, even if they tackle rough terrain very well.

Indeed. Punching karts was major in Double Dash!!, but since they couldn't have you punching in this one, your sheer weight bumps people around. Powersliding is good, but the courses feel smaller, so powerslidding is harder for me(compared to MK64). I do like how fast you can powerslide with the D-pad though.

Well I think so. We have wireless internet. But I dunno about broadband and anything.

Usually if you have wireless internet, you have broadband or cable. So what you do is at the main menu you go to the Nintendo WFC feature. Then you go to the WFC Settings and there should be like three empty slots. go to one and have it scan for any spots next to you. When it picks up one, press the A button on the name of the service, then it'll test out your connection. If its all fine and dandy, you should be ready to hit the net.

Erm. Well, The DS goes for 100 bucks these days, right? And Mario Kart DS is 35 dollars if I remember. So that's 135 dollars...

I say go for it. There's craploads of good games that you can get all at once now, and you'll probably be satisfied for a good time.

Besides, the Rev probably isn't going to come out for a while, and the PS3 isn't until spring, right? So you can probably take the risk.

EDIT: So far I've got 2 wins to 0 losses. :P My connection seems to have fixed itself for now but I wouldn't go so far as to jinx myself by saying that it's fixed permanently.

If you do buy it, this should definitely be the first game you should get. It's a great game and the WiFi only makes it better. Am I the only one here, though, that was disappointed that there was no Battle Mode on the WiFi?

$450 is more than enough, considering that all of the developers with Dev kits agree that it's going to cost $150 or less, and with the DS down at $100(only at target) now, with MKDS at $35, and Revo games at $50 or possibly even less, you could pull it all off for about $335 for one of each and a game for each. That extra $115 could be used for accessories, Revo downloads, and a secondary Revo game($50 for a Revo game, $30 for accessories or oldschool games, whether a spare controller or more shells, leaving $35 for a second DS game). And also, considering the Revolution isn't comming out until next Thanksgiving(apparently, it's been confirmed by developers) you have a good long while.

For Single Player, I like Wario in the 4-wheel cradle. All around good stats, and I've happened to take a liking to heavy racers, since they can bump the opposition off tracks very well. =)

But since you can't bump people on Nintendo WiFi, (boo) I'll have to choose a lighter character and a speedier Kart, rather than a heavy kart for NWFC. Heavy karts get stuck in mud and stuff anyway, so I'll probably choose a pretty light kart because fo this.

Dude you should switch cars! I mean... The 4-Wheel Cradle is so slow. The Cucumber with DK in it has more speed, same acceleration samw weight much better handeling and item is the same to. Also I don't think Wario is too great. He has lower drift and accelatation than DK so I think DK is the best heavy weight.

Yeah the drift kinda sucks, but the rest of the stats are very good I think. For a good drift you should throw DK in the Wild Life. That's my second best car for DK.

I prefer acceleration, drift/handling, and item stats over speed. The 4-wheel cradle with Wario in it really gives me this.

But for online, since you can't bump people, I'd prefer all the other stats over weight. I need to get something speedier, and preferably lightweight.

I don't think its in the manual. It's something you give to your internet provider. Its a password set up by the users I believe. You would have to call your service provider if the person who made the password.

Wow I feel good! I beated a Staff ghost data from Nintendo. It was so daaaaymn hard, it took me like 20 times to get a perfect starter boost. The stage btw was Bowser's Castle, the DS version. I was DK in the Standard R.O.B.

Yeah, Staff Data is pretty difficult. I beat the one on the Figure 8 course by doing this new technique I discovered from racing against some one from NOA.

I'm losing interest in this game. FAST. Online play sucks, because when I'm in the lead and about to win, the other players always quit. i^i...

Single Player gameplay still challenges me, though. Ever since I linked up with my friend in Multiplayer, the CPU opponents seem somewhat... smarter in 150 cc and Mirror Mode. Did I just get worse, or does the computer get smarter after you play with a REALLY good human opponent? O.o;;

Actually, I don't play Wifi MKDS anymore unless it's with friends, because everyone else disconnects, or totally owns, so my record never progresses. Doesn't help that the only guy who wants to play online with me always beats me either(beats or ties, about 50/50 honestly, but ties don't COUNT). So I play Animal Crossing Wild World online ALL the time, and I play MKDS online when I feel like playing something with those that don't have ACWW til Christmas, but I do still play MKDS often. I need to unlock Mission 8, and to get around to getting that star by my name from GP modes.

Those guys who are really good probably use the snaking technique. It's basically weaving back and forth on a straight stretch of track doing drift-boosts to get a speed that is similar to having an Invincibility Star. Once you get the hang of it, it's really easy to do.

IMO, the best kart to do this with is the unlockable Dry Bomber (the cart that looks like a miniature tank/hummer), but any kart with a high handling and low drift stats works good.

The best kart, IMO, is Toad in the B Dasher. It's stats are so good, check 'em out.

Dry Bones in the Dry Bomber is great, except for the low Item stat.

They kinda do. If someone disconnects (powers off) during a race, they get a certain number of losses added to their record depending on the number of opponents in that game. (So if it was a 4 player game they would get 3 losses for disconnecting.)

I found some secret in the DK Pass level.
There is a Item Box which always gives you a Star or triple Mushrooms when you destroy it. It's after the first big snowball. You will see a mountain with trees, drive up that mountain and you'll see a item box. It will always give you a STar or Mushroom even when your on the first place. Also it's a pretty good shortcut.

Diddy, it's basically a variation of the Donkey Kong level from double dash, but they wanted a snow level, and they wanted it to be more original, so they made it be the snow level. The smiling snowmen are always in one of the snow levels. If you couldn't see the relation between those two DK levels, well, they're about as similar as the two rainbow roads between MKDD!! and MKDS, which I find to be very, very similar, just different routes.

In MKDD they atleast really showed it was a DK level. Jungle, Barrel Cannon, a kind of commercial saying Donkey Cannon or something. But yeah they are quitte similair if you say: "You ride up a mountain and then your going down avoiding snowballs/rocks." DK Pass just disapointed me thats all.
