I dunno if this is old or new news (lol), but regardless, the DS is getting a make-over. Which is good. I think...

    http://www.joystiq.com/2006/01/11/nintendo...oming-jan-16th/

A lot of people say that the DS still has a kiddy-look, a claim that has always seemed to drag Nintendo down. A lot. I hope that it will come out soon to meet my birthday. That would be awesome. But this would mean that I would three DSes... LOL. I PRAY for an Analog Nub and a more durable touch screen.

^ Some interesting ideas. But these are just ideas, not official images.

The ideas are cool, the DS is too big IMO as it is right now. It's also a little bit too...square. All those ideas are good and perhaps Nintendo should look into this redesign.

        Iwata said:

The DS came in for criticism for not following the traditional Nintendo design aesthetic. Some have even called it ugly. Given Nintendo's history of evolving the design of portable hardware, will we see a revised model DS? Again, Iwata-san laughs good heartedly. "Hardware developers at Nintendo are always looking for what comes next and what will be the new direction as soon as they finish the design of any particular piece of hardware. Some of them are actually working on improved functionality of the existing machine, with some working on a rework of the exterior design exactly in the same way they did with the transition from Game Boy Advance to Game Boy Advance SP," hinting at a possible, dare we say probable reissue in the not too distant future. But there's more. "Some designers are working on a completely new project, completely different from the existing DS platform," perhaps the most concrete mention of the new Game Boy development to date. Iwata-san continues, "But, what I can tell you is nothing complete has been decided right now about when or what kind of modifications or new features will be added to existing machines. However, I am the one who is looking forward the most to the time when one of Nintendo's developers approaches me and says, 'Look! We have come up with the great idea!'. So once again, I have nothing concrete to share at this time." Perhaps at E3?
I'm looking forward to a re-design. But I hope that the DS doesn't turn into what the GameBoy is... I want a new design, and I want to stick with it! XD

Of course it will be like the Gameboy is, and the iPod is for that matter. Smaller and smaller, that's how Nintendo does it's handhelds.

I just don't want my room to be filled with DSes though. XDD; I love the DS too much to keep away from any re-designs they do.

            Nintendo got me right where they want me. >_>;

How dare you buy into any company's campaign to make you spend. Shame.

If they do a black DS, there is even more of a chance I will buy it.

Meh, it'll be reason to buy a new one, and give my old DS to my sister, then buy her a copy of ACWW for her birthday and force her to move out of my town, so I can have my DS back 24/7. :P

That's a good idea there, I should buy an old DS, then buy a new one and complain to my parents that I am doing my brother a favour by giving him my old one.

There was a rumour abound that stated Nintendo would unveil the new design as soon as January 16th (or today). Naturally, there has been no such confirmation. The best possibility for the debut of a new DS design would be at the Game Developer's Conference in March, but probably no sooner.

If you recall, at GDC 2005 was Nintendo's announcement of the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection, as well as the backward compatibility of the Revolution, among other things.

Also, you should note that the above comments by Iwata probably mean that the DS will not undergo major changes (i.e. the addition of an analog stick). It will, at its core, be the same design as before, and with the same functionality, but no more.

(Think GameBoy Advance to SP, and then to Micro; the size and exterior changed, but it's essentially the same button layout, etc.)

Due to how well the DS is doing I doubt a re-design will be happening any time soon.
I doubt Nintendo would re-design untill sales drop significantly.

I'm looking forward to a new DS design. Anything that's lighter, more comfortable, and cooler looking than it is now would make me happy. The DS is kinda ugly, and playing games like Metroid Prime Hunters is a nightmare =\

I think there is too much wasted space on the top part of the DS, but hey, I dont play handhelds at school etc anyways. Have to talk to friends, not play with myself. XD

Another sad attempt by company's to re-release the same product for the same price after a certain period to keep their profits up longer. Remember the PS1? Even the PS2? The Gameboy Advance to Gameboy SP? Same sh*t, different mask.

What about playing with friends AND talking at the same time?

It would be great if you could play GBA games on the bottom screen and chat on the top screen. Not sure how that would work though...

No like you and your friends are playing a multiplayer game together. While playing you make comments and such in real life.

The only thing that really bugs me with the DS is that it can be heavy if you try and hold it with just one hand. I don't think I'd buy a redesigned version.

It is heavy, especially when you're using the stylus, but you could almost expect that from the size of it. If the redesigned version was lighter as well, that would be a good selling point.

What are you guys whining about now? The DS isn't heavy at all. Hell, if you think the DS is heavy, try holding a PSP. The PSP is slightly wider than the DS, and it is slightly heavier because of that, and I didn't think the PSP was heavy at all. Either I'm really strong, or you guys are really weak. :)

It's the fact that the ds is top heavy as well, making it very uncomfortable to hold in one hand and use the stylus.

A DS redesign is the only one i've ever considered buying. I never bought another GBA after the original (horizontal is so much better anyway), and a smaller PS and PS2 is just, wtf? If you have plenty of space for the larger one than wtf are you doing buying a smaller one? >.o

Who say everyone in the world had a PS2? When the slimline came out the PS2 sales increased. Why you think it outsold the 360? The slimline (maybe software).
The slimline is a very very good device. All that power and hardware in that small space.

I quite like the design of the DS. It looks much more mature than any other Ninty console! But, if everyone's complaining they don't like it, then I guess the big N really should make a new DS, but they must add a more durable touch screen!
