Well, as this generation winds down, the great games have pretty much run out (save a few). So I guess it's time to look back for a while instead of forwards. Microsoft joined the fray this cycle with the XBox, Sony kept going strong, and Nintendo continued to manufacture games for all ages. But who had the best generation?

I loved and still love the PS2 over xbox and GC, but Nintendo definetly owned the hand-helds.

I voted for the PS2 as well, I think it dominated the sales bracket and Nintendo did not really give it's full effort in competing, IMO. The only thing the XBox had going for it is great online play and Halo.

Nintendo wins in the portable section hands down, for two reasons:

          1) Well, they have a lot of portables.

          2) Nintendo DS still owns PSP in the gaming section.

But the PS2 wins in the console section. GameCube... meh. Wind Waker and SSBM pretty much saved the GameCube from destruction. Xbox was good but only had two memorable games: Fable and Halo 1 and 2.

I really don't think the PSP or DS should be there since this and next year we'd see the the potential of the PSP and DS really. They were just released and I see around 4 more years with them really.

The PS2 was my favourite out the bunch simply because it had the most memorable games:
                FFX/X-2
                Metal Gear Solid 2/3
                Devil May Cry series...
                Gran Turismo...
                Kingdom Hearts...

                Only to name a few...

i voted the ps2 for the consoles, and the nintendo ones for handhelds. I think the ps2 had the greatest number of "memorable" games. Eugine named some of them, like the FF's that came out for ps2, Gran Turismo, and Kingdom Hearts. However, some late additions in the ps2 lineup are also noteworthy, or at least i think so. I'm talking about games like Dragon Quest VIII, which i'm currently playing.

Now, as far as handhelds go, then Nintendo takes the trophy. Golden Sun, anyone? :P

Or it could be that you want to give the PSP more time to potentially catch up to the DS :P (and yes, that is a smiley, folks).

Microsoft did an incredible job getting their Live program off the ground, and on their first console too, I was impressed. I didn't like Microsoft entering the market at first, honestly, but I was impressed to see what they did, it seems they really took things seriously...but they kinda messed up on the whole software department. They really proved themselves with the Live though, so that certainly secured their future as a number one online provider...as long as you're willing to pay :P

But yeah, GBA dominates the universe of handhelds, now it's up for grabs with DS and PSP...or, DS and DSLite in Japan. xD

But yeah, GBA and Xbox from me.

The PS2 was the #1-selling console in Australia last time I checked. I will, however, remain faithful to Nintendo in the handheld department.

The PS2 is actually one of the oldest consoles on the market, and they're still making great games at low prices. Good ol' Sony.

Analysts say the PS2 is over priced now really, it should be $99 now... BUT the PS2 is still the most demanded console I think so Sony isn't lowering its price for nothing.

Of course. Especially with the PS2 redesign, Sony could very well drop the price of the console, and have its already high demand soar (100 million+ units shipped recently).

I suppose Sony doesn't want to drop the price of the PS2 in the same year that the PS3 is launching, and while its PSP handheld is still in its infancy, attempting to establish a dedicated worldwide fan base. Doesn't seem to be the case in Japan, of course...

I find it funny that there's one lonely vote for the PSP up there. XD I wonder who voted for it, hmm?

Anyways, seeing how everyone's put their opinion up. Who will have the best new generation of gaming? I'm hoping Nintendo will get it's seat back as the best console. I'm not saying this because Nintendo's my prefered company, I'm saying this because Nintendo's actually the company who has the best interest in the gaming world. Think, who made the rumble pak first? Who made handheld gaming what it is? And I'm not saying that Sony and Microsoft should butt out of the gaming world, competition keeps prices low.

Although I see the PS3 still keeping it's seat as the best console.

Even the movies for the system only really appeal to one type of people. Teens. Basically all it is is cheap horror and comedy flicks.

I voted Nintendo all the way. Yes, yes, I admit I'm a fanboy!! But Microsoft just pissed me off when they entered the console industry and also the XBox has the least good games out of the three. The PS2 was very good and had the most sales, but I don't think anything can beat the GC's games. I loved them.
I think there's no point in commenting why I voted for The Big N in the hand-held market.

Anyway, as for the future... I hope Nintendo becomes number 1 again, because I think they really deserve it. But it's pretty unlikely to happen(even though I'm positive the Rev will have more sales than the GC). :P

Although I love Nintendo and the Gamecube, the PS2 had the best console generation imo. And Nintendo owns the handheld generation :P

For those reasons, that's why I gave my votes for who I did. Sony sold so many units and just totally dominated the console. Nintendo needs to make up some ground with the Rev.

I voted for the "Big N." I never really got to play all the games for the other consols, but all the games I played sucked 'cept for GT3, and Halo series. You obviously know why I voted for the hand helds.

I think the 360 will get lost in the shuffle with the other two coming out. Especially if they are both better.

i think the only advantage the x360 has had so far is its release date, which is quite early, compairing it to that of its competitors (namely, the ps3 and the Revolution). However, a few names in the list of x360 games stand out: PGR 3, and now that new Ghost Recon game that just came out. I know, there are others, but i don't mention them because they're not console-only, they have pc versions as well. Like Call of Duty II, for instance. Another very interesting game, that just came out today, is The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion. There is a pc version as well, but man, does this game look good. And not only that...Radiant AI. I saw some gameplay footage of the radiant AI in action, and it's amazing: doggie bothers master, doggie gets fireballed to death. Go to the game's website if you want to check it out.

Elder Scrolls is supposed to be a very good game, but the PC version is always so much better than the console version when it comes to games like this. They always seem to drop the ball on the console version.

But, you're right, back on topic. Was anyone else really surprised that the GBA continued to do well almost 4 years after it's release. I would have thought that after three iterations and a stream of games running thin, that sales would drop somewhat.

I'd have to say that Sony won this round. When the PSX came out it instantly rivaled everything else, and the PS2 surpassed that by far. The only problem was the fact that there were a bunch of defects (well.. at least DREs) with the original PS2s, that seemed to happen just out of the system's warranty period. Can you say "money sucker?"

Nintendo, as always, won the Handheld war. No contest. I don't think I need to explain myself on this one. As a devout Nintendo follower, though, I am concerned about where they stand in the console market. What worries me even more is the fact that they aren't doing anything about it.

This is quite a stupid question to ask on a forum where kids are too biased/poor to afford anything other than a Gamecube or Gameboy. This question would only truly apply to those of us such as myself who own all three of the current generation consoles, and no playing them at your friends house doesn't count because that still makes your opinion biased.

For me, the PS2 wins my vote for offline games as it has delivered a variety of quality games over the years, but for online play the PS2's Online mode doesn't even compared to Xbox Live.
